Why Your about Page Matters and How to Tell Your Story to Get Attention
Ever heard that your About Page is one of the most important pages on your blog?
Why?
Neil Patel sums it up perfectly when he says:
"If you get your About page right, it will help you build a strong brand and position yourself as the go-to expert in your industry"
This is exactly what WA teaches us to do.
One of the ways to get it right is to tell your story in such a way that readers connect and clearly know what's in it for them if they stick around.
I've recently been reading a wonderful book called Story Driven: You Don't Have To Compete When You Know Who You Are by Bernadette Jiwa. It's well worth reading by the way.
She explains how the most successful businesses in the world are all story driven.
If it's worked for the likes of Nike, Alibaba, Apple and many others so why not your business too?
In the book she provides a story-driven framework which I thought was very useful. I'm sharing it here to help you tell your story more effectively on your About Page too.
Aim to incorporate the following on your page:
- BACKSTORY - Your journey till now. What has brought you to where you are now?
- VALUES - Your guiding beliefs. What's important to you?
- PURPOSE - This is your reason to exist.
- VISION - Aspirations for the future, What changes do you want to bring about?
- STRATEGY - How do you intend to make it happen? Opportunities, plans and behavior. How will you deliver on your purpose and work towards your vision while staying in alignment with your values?
Neil Patel also says that the success of your About Page can be measured by whether people leave comments on your page organically. If they do, you are obviously engaging readers, if not, maybe you need to look at yours again.
According to the above measure I definitely have to look at mine some more, what about you?
It's worth remembering that our 'About Page' can change and grow as we do. The key is not to write it once and forget about it.

I haven't thought about that because I have been trying to motivate myself to write my content. Now I know why people have updated their about me pages. I will have to do that as well. Thanks for sharing that important info.

Hi Marylou,
Hope you are overcome with an abundance of inspiration and motivation to write today. :)

Great post, I really enjoyed it. You are absolutely right the About page it does tell our story. That is how the audience will follow us is on the About page.
Mary
Thanks Mary. It's true. I realize I always read About pages when I am interested in a blog and based on that I often decide whether I am interested enough. Best I check mine out more thoroughly. :)

Thanks for the reminder, Mark. I agree with all you say. It's about being who we are, and not trying to be seen as we think others may want to see us. How could we know what someone else sees in us. We can't. I'm often surprised at comments I receive at WA. I feel honored that people see in me something I don't see in myself.
I will revisit my About page in my two active websites.
Thanks Val. That is so true about not knowing what others see in us. I remember doing an activity for work once where we had to ask 5 people to give us anonymous feedback about what they believed were our good points and also what they thought were our opportunities for improvement. I remember being blown away by some people's responses for both types of feedback.

Good to read, Mark.
If only everyone knew to be just who they are, and realized they are appreciated that way - well, most of the time!!
