Quick SEO Tip - Be the First to Write About Something

A lot of people, when trying to rank in the search engines, try to find existing low competition keywords. This is great, but it's not the only way.

It can actually be really easy to rank on page 1 of Google if you are one of the first to target a particular keyword. This can happen even with short posts of only a few hundred words.

So my advice to you is this:

  1. Keep a look out for new products in your niche. One way to do this is with Google Alerts like "New PRODUCT TYPE" or something like that.
  2. Write about all new products, but make it short ( about 200-500 words) so you don't spend much time on each one.
  3. Set up Google alerts for these product names.
  4. Keep an eye out for the alerts from Google. Also notice if you get a significant increase in traffic for one of the products.
  5. If a product does become popular, go back and flesh out the post and make it really thorough. You'll likely keep hold of your page 1 ranking while others come along too late.

The moral of the story is this:

Rather than waiting until something is popular and then trying to rank for it, get in first for everything and rank just in case they later become popular. By doing this with lots of short posts, you spread the risk and also increase the likelyhood of at least one of them becoming popular.

On my main website, a huge chunk of my organic search traffic comes from a product I wrote about 200 words for when it was first released. I claimed the top spot. Then it became popular and I went back and made it a full review. It still consistently brings in traffic every day.

It really is achievable.

Thanks for this great advice, Marcus.

That sounds like very good advice. Thanks. I'll have to give some thought to applying it to my niche.

Let me know how you get on.

Great advice, thanks, Marcus.

Great advice, thanks, Marcus.

Great tip. I do get Google alerts but hadn't done much with it yet. Now I know what to do next. Thanks.

Hi Marcus, give me some more, would this be something like 'new Osprey backpacks' or 'new backpacking backpacks'?

Hi Jovo. Yes, that kind of thing, although I would remove the s from the end, so make it "new Osprey backpack". That way, when there is a new post indexed in Google with a phrase like "Check out this new Osprey backpack" you would receive the notification for that. Or you could make it more general like "new backpack". Then you would get notified any time there was a new backpack of any type.

Thank you Marcus.

Wow!! A really superb idea. Tks for sharing!

It's actually my main technique. My main website would only have a fraction of the traffic it now has if it wasn't for this technique.
