Not Every Website Will Be Successful
Not every website you create will be successful. This is an unfortunate fact about internet marketing. It's not a guarranteed process of do ABC and XYZ will always happen.
In fact, your first website may actually fail, or only partially suceed. But what you learn from trying to make it succeed will be extremely valuable when you come to create your next website.
It's unwise to put all your eggs in one basket. However, it's equally unwise to have so many baskets you can't keep track of them all. Somewhere in the middle is the best place to be. It's okay to have several websites on the go, as long as you have the time and energy to follow through with all of them and keep them going.
So don't stubbornly work on just one website for 5 years if it's not succeeding, but also don't quickly set up 20 websites in the first few months. Try one website for a while, then maybe branch out into a 2nd and possibly a 3rd, if you have time for that.
This is what I am doing. I have my Earn Money with Marcus website, then I have my Best Buy Tablets Under $100 website which just recently made its first 3 sales. Soon I will start my laptops mini niche site which I bought the domain for at the same time as the tablet site but haven't got round to doing anything with yet.
Then there is my Synths and Software site, which I spent months working on only to make a few sales. That's currently been pushed to the side for a bit while I consider what to do with it.
I also manage the websites for the company I used to work for on a contractor basis.
So that's it for me right now. Although I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket, I have a few baskets which I can safely manage on my own.
The time to have lots of websites is when you are earning enough to be able to outsource a lot of the work. It takes time to get to that point, though...

I appreciate your thoughts and agree. I think many have found their first website may not actually be what they end up doing but it was at least a start and helped to get the learning underway.
Nice post, Marcus. Was the Synth & Software your first site? What did you learn from its failure? I mean what do you think went wrong?
No, I set up Earn Money with Marcus nearly a year before I set up Synths and Software.
But I'm not new to all this. I tried all this years ago and never quite got things off the ground. Hoping I can succeed properly this time.
I'm still a bit baffled what went wrong with Synths and Software. At some point I might go back to it and give it all a complete overhaul.
as you say marcus - the first one is a learning curve. when you look back on it in years to come then you will see the mistakes you made and possibly revamp it.
when you pick your niche at the start it may not be the right one but stick with it to set up the first site and keep an eye out for other opportunities. you may even find that you enjoy SEO more than blogging!!
it does take awhile to get established and get a decent amount of traffic through your site. most of us newbies are too impatient, you need at least 6 months to see whether it is working. and to be blogging consistantly minimum of once a week.
it is a bit of a reality check when you have worked on your site for a few months to see no returns, but you need to remind yourself that this is a business and it takes a while to get established.
multiple streams of income are always better than relying on one sole source.
so thanks for the reality check marcus - i hope you are able to revamp your synths site in the future.
have fun

maybe your visitors were in the info gathering stage?
but it will be there for the future
different marketing techniques?

Thanks, and yes, it's truly wise to do only what one has time for!
