You Need Two Websites

It's not what you think.

You should be concentrating on just 1 website for building your business. All you need is one site to build a fulltime business.

Once that website is making a profit then you can entertain the idea of going into a different niche.

What I'm Talking About Is A Test Site.

You should have a separate site where you can play around. Here you can try new themes, try different plugins and do anything you like and never have to worry that you will screw up your live site.

I have 2 test sites and I use them all the time. One site has my current theme and everything else on it. The other one is the site I use for making my how to videos.

So when I want to try something different or new I can do it on my test site and make as many mistakes as I want and it does not matter because it has zero effect on anything.

Once I got things the way I want it, I can then take whatever changes I made from the test site and put them on the live site with no issues.

All of my test sites are subdomains for my live sites. This way you don't have to buy a separate domain name - subdomains are free sites and you can have as many as you like.

The only plugin I have on these test sites is one called Under Construction. So if anyone happens to stumble upon the site (which is pretty rare if anyone does) no one can see what I am doing.

They will see a page that simply says - yoursubdomainname.com is coming soon.

Now go play

I believe in you!

Good tip

Have you ever tried wamp or xamp?

If you like techie stuff, you install it and it turns your computer to a local pc and you can install wordpress and have a mirror site

I know of wamp and what it does - but I have never used it. I really don't need to -

Hi leomery,

Thanks for the great tip.

Does this affect google ranking vis-a-vis having duplicate content on one or more sites?

Phil

Hi Phil, You don't have to use real content on the site, As Leo said he uses it just to test the theme and and changes to it. I do use testing site to test with the theme and all my plugins. I do that so if I want to test a new plugin I can see if there are conflicts before going live with it on my real site. Best wishes on your endeavors.

Hi Drawshot,

Thanks, got it now. It's for testing the structure and processes of the site regardless of content.

Cheers

Phil

I don't have any content on these sites - that's not what they are used for - so it's a none issue

Ahh, now I see.

Thanks for the reply.

Phil

Leo, why didn't you tell me this a long time ago. lol You kept a big big secret from me. lol Thanks, you are one smarty pants. I will be doing this. Thanks again Evelyn.

I can't give you all my secrets all at once - LOL

I didn't know I could get a free subdomain. Do you name that site a different name from your live one?

I don't know how subdomains work either, but I have had two siterubix test sites from the start. They don't have all my content etc. but at the beginning, when I was totally ignorant about Wordpress and Themes I used them a lot just to see what I could and could not change on different themes.

Hi Gordi, You can just set up one of the free websites here at WA to use as a test site. Thats what I've done. I plan on testing everything on it first before I place it live on my real site. Best wishes on your endeavors.

You can name your sub domain test site anything you want.

But where do I go to set up the subdomain?

Sorry my bad here at the WA siterubix is the sub domain of the WA sites that are free.

As a premium member you can have as many siterubix sites as you want - simply create one as your test site

Thanks, I am actually trying that now. I am having trouble picking a theme, too many choices!

It is best to use the same theme on your test site that your live site is using.

This is a new site, I am trying a test one first so I can decide on the theme

that's a smart move

This is a fantastic idea ... and boy, could I have used it! I most certainly will now! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Melody
