On occassions I am struggling to hit 1000 words in a blog - how important is it that it is 1000 words long? My current niche is the island of Tenerife - which is where I live
There was an old saying that the length should be like a woman's skirt, short enough to be interesting, long enough to cover the topic. You don't have to write 1000 words. You need to answer the questions your readers would be asking about that aspect of your topic. Period.
As a travel writer, I can talk to you about writing an article on an event. Unless it's a new event, you can write about previous ones - some of the bands that played, some of the prize winners in any of the contests, quotes from the organizers. Just make sure you do hit at least 700-800 words or Google will ignore it.
I typically do not concern myself with word count much as it all spans out in the end in a way that works for me. Some of my posts have as few as 500 words, some as many as 4000.
I strive to not go under 500, but I do have one site that does me pretty good, and the word count on that site ranges in 2 to 300 per post.
To add to the responses you've already been given ..... There's nothing wrong with having a few shorter articles on your site. The main thing is to be sure to fully explain the topic at hand. If this only takes 800 words, it won't help you to add 200+ words of "fluff" just to get your word count up.
I think it is good to have a variety - some 1500-2000 word pillar posts and some shorter 800-1100 word posts. In the end it will balance out. Also keep in mind that any comments left on each article will add to the word count.
Good luck, Shannon
Oh .. thank you, I didn't think about any comments adding to the word count. Thanks for pointing that out
When I started, I was concern about number of words. After all the feedback from the experienced people here at WA, you can mix it up and should balance writing for your audience and SEO.
There are posts for everything. If it is an event announcement, then it should be reasonable and fit that purpose.
Authoritative posts are expected to have lots of substance, there need to be substantial to rank.
However, if I write a 1,000 word joke, no one will be laughing...
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and for putting things in to context for me .... a 1000 word joke had me laughing!!!!

I meant to say hello this morning after I read your question, I have a problem with writing never mind word count. I have times when I can write non stop and days when I can't think of the first word. So that doesn't help much I know, I keep a list of things I plan on writing and try to get as as I can when it comes easy.
much success on reaching your goals

Please can someone explain to me how the ranking works within WA? My has gone down - but not sure why that would be. Many thanks for you helpful bunch in advance. Best wish
Rank is a motivator. It adds fuel to the fire. Motivation when focused and targeted on the 'right stuff' could earn us the gold!
Great question. Awesome post!
My secret: Check out my attached image. I am still digging! : )

Good morning, Julie! Aaaah, the rankings. Yes, it is a reflection of your activity and involvement on the WA platform here with everybody, but it's also a reflection of the involvement of others, so if lots of of folks are active and you are as well, your rank may not change much. It takes into consideration how much you help others, engage on the platform and your posts on the WA side. There's some algorithm that does it.
Now all that being said, don't get hung up on it. As has been pointed out, your rank doesn't put $$ in the bank. It does feel good though!!!! I bumped from 300k something upon my start to an Ambassador in 4 months. It felt pretty nice, but it is a large responsibility and being that involved is a very big time commitment. I realized that I was chasing rank rather than building my business and stepped back... way back! I've dropped to 58.
Just be you. Do your thing. Have fun here in the WA platform. Meet people. Learn and work on building your business. The rank will take care of itself. Just let it be what it is. You'll be fine.
Hope this helps!
Christine
Thank you Christine for a great explanation and also for your words of advice! Much appreciated.
Warm regards
Julie
Ranking here at WA is awesome. Earning money is always in your own website. and some you can find here at WA! 🌹🆗🌈👁🗨💲
If you click on the blue rank number under your Profile picture, this will take you through to the explanation of how your rank is determined.
Largely it is based on your activity and engagement within the WA community. The more you engage and contribute, answer member questions, etc, the better your rank. Note that your rank does not have anything to do with building your website or creating content for your own site.
Don't get too hung up on WA rank. It's a measure of engagement nothing more - it does earn you any money unlike working on your business.

Thanks Randall, I appreciate your time in replying and offering an explanation. Much appreciated.

The live trainings are just completely out of my time zone (gutted) so I would like to know how quickly the replays are posted? Thank you
Usually right after I believe - or maybe a short gap like an hour or something... But certainly not long.

I have bought my own domain name and followed the instructions but when I type my domain name into google my site does not appear.
Any ideas?
You should be typing it into your address bar, not Google. This website has some useful info on helping you find the address bar: https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/a/addrebar.htm
As Diane says, getting listed in Google is called "indexing" and this can take a period of time - so in the meantime to visit your site you'd need to use the address bar.
Hi - you have to wait for Google to find it first. This is called indexing and can take from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. You will get an email when it happens.
