The Most Important Lesson, Vegas Revisited

Here was the most important lesson I learned in Vegas.

Well, to finish off my quite unlikely yet triumphantly inspiring pool novella, after handing the sports agent the special cue ball signed by Tennessee Tarzan Mike Massey, I walked him over to the booth to meet Mike Massey himself.

Seeing his assistant at the booth who also happened to be Mike's roommate, I said, "Hey (assistant's name), where is Mike today? He told me yesterday he was going to be here 10:30 am this morning?

The assistant replied, "Last I'd talked to Mike 2 hours ago he was still in the hotel room in bed. He told me he was going to be driving to the dry cleaners before coming here. You never know with Mike, he keeps his own hours here.".

Dejected, I replied, "Okay thanks (assistant's name), I will try back here in 45 minutes."

So we decided to go for a brief lunch at the restaurant in the atrium of the Westgate. During our lunch my new agent friend told me he really would've loved to meet Mike in person, but had to be heading back by 3:00 pm, It was now 2:15 pm.

Damn! I really wanted to have the agent meet his idol Mike. First Mike was his pool idol, secondly I had a feeling that if both would meet, there was even a possibility of a new client-agent relationship spawning in the works.

Now I knew for a fact the dry cleaner was about a 30 minute drive away from Mike's hotel suite. Not going to happen.

So disappointing.

So around 2:30 pm, we departed the restaurant and I decided to walk the agent through the Westgate Resort corridor toward the parking garage.

He said, "Kaju, I really can't thank you enough. I still am in disbelief you were able to get that signed cue ball for me by Tennessee Tarzan himself. And then you also best him? Is this a joke? Unbelievable!

I replied, "This was a truly amazing week, I can't believe we BOTH switched seats on the flight here - I truly believe we were destined to meet each other on that flight (agent's name)!

He said, "Yes, buddy it was meant to be."

Disappointed I said, "My only regret is I'm really sorry you couldn't meet Mike. I really tried ."

He replied, "Please, no worries brother, you did everything. you could. Next time."

Then on the way to the garage as we were soon intersecting the path of walkway traffic egress toward the large tournament room, before my eyes in a flash, I see a large gargantuan specimen of a man wearing a blue polo shirt ambling with a prolonged gait passing in front of me.

Immediately I knew.

"Mike!! Hey Mike!! The gargantuan man turned around, inspecting but failing to see where the call was coming from.

"Hey Mike, right here! Right here! It's Kaju!!"

Mike then saw me and walked over immediately. I couldn't believe it.

It happened. Again!! The time was now 2:45 pm.

"Mike, this is my friend the agent (name) you signed that cue ball for. Hey (name), meet Mike Massey!"

The agent was stunned almost at a loss for words. "Ah, Mr. Massey. Uh, it's such a pleasure to meet you. Kaju said you'd be here, but we gave up hope!"

Mike Massey replied, "Oh yes, it's great to meet you. Kaju told me that you represent baseball players?"

"Yes sir, I do, and a few other sport figures and entertainers. My main client is Pete Rose." said the agent. I watched this conversation transpire in front of the tournament room in utter disbelief.

Mike replied, "Oh yeah, I've met Pete before, what a character! We have much in common!

By the way, me and 4 other pro players here are thinking of doing our own special "trick shot tour" to entertain people around the country. We think it would be a great thing for the sport. Do you know anyone who can sponsor it?"

Then I witnessed my new agent friend go into complete "agent mode" telling Mike he would love to represent him, and Mike was receptive and before I knew it, both were exchanging cell #s.

Then my agent friend said, "Great Mike, I will be in touch let's talk about this event, I think i can help you get this project moving. You should also keep in contact with Kaju who is in New York."

Well, within that 5 minute conversation, there now was talk of my involvement as a liaison for a potential business project between a pool legend and a major sports agent. Who I met on a plane.

This is still currently a work in progress, but what an open door this continues to be!

Best of all, the time was now 2:56 pm, my agent buddy still had 4 minutes to get his car out of the Westgate garage and be on his way for his next appointment!

What an ending to an utterly bizarre and uplifting story.

So here is the Morale:

No special skills are required - although I admit in this case my pool playing prowess was certainly a catalyst - The Most Important Lesson is:

  • Learn to recognize special opportunities when they appear
  • There are NEW business opportunities everywhere!
  • Small opportunities lead to bigger ones
  • Always take a chance and go for it
  • Be willing to "Improvise as you go along"
  • When opportunities arise, "Take a Risk on a Dare!."

What a fitting ending to an unbelievable "chain of events" that first started happening on the way to Vegas!

Thank you for reading, and always GO for it!

Cheers,

Kaju

What a way to transform pool skills into personal skills Kaju. A great transformational story we can all learn from!

Thank you so much Mike, that really means the world to me!

Very motivating story.

Happy to hear this, Cinderella. That really makes my day!!

Great story, Kaju. My curiosity peaked when reading your title, "Vegas Revisited". I'm thinking, wait a minute, Kaju has never gone to the WA Vegas trip, he hasn't been a member long enough. As I read your story, I understand what you meant.
You are right, though. There are opportunities all around us regardless of our occupations, niches, families or friends.
* Always take a chance and go for it
* Be willing to "Improvise as you go along"
* When opportunities arise, "Take a Risk on a Dare!."
Well said. Thank you for sharing some good advice.
Ken

Ken, its great to see you! All I know is that the best things that ever happened to me, always involved some risk. You really do need to improvise "on the fly" as you go along and be ready for ANY opportunity that will arise.

Thank you for your encouraging sentiments!

Loved you list! Thanks for sharing!
