$4.7K Month - SEPT 2018 Monthly Report!

Last Update: October 02, 2018

An amazing month has just ended. September 2018 was a very exciting month full of ups and downs for me, which I'll explain in just a second.

Here's my affiliate income for September 2018:

As many of you know, I made it to Vegas earlier in September. In fact, it was on 4 Sept...

VEGAS Baby! Here I Come!

And, I've also bought my very first laptop fully-paid by myself which is a Customized MacBook Pro 2018:

NEW MacBook Pro 2018 - My Vegas Gift!

So, things are going really great.

In my Vegas update, I said that I would stop writing myself because I'm hiring a full-time writer, which I've done it successfully.

I have a full-time writer who is writing 5 posts per week for me, handling most of my content creations.

But that wasn't an easy task for me. I read lots of articles online, watched lots of YouTube videos before I'm finally mastering it...

Note on Outsourcing Content Creation

"Outsourcing content creation is all about hiring the best writers and then you can free up your time for higher ROI tasks."

I wish it was that easy.

This will always be the biggest myth and misconcpetion because the first thing when we think of content creation is all about whether the person is a good writer or not.

I'm not saying you should hire something who is not good at writing. All I'm saying is that the quality of their writing is NOT the biggest determining factor for you to decide if you are to hire the person or not.

Instead, what I've learnt is that the most important quality for your ideal worker is their...

Ability to follow instructions closely & pay attention to details!

There are a lot of good writers out there who simply couldn't follow all the instructions and they'll miss out on the small details.

So the most important thing for you is to find the ones who are detail-oriented and they can follow your instructions closely because the core of outsourcing lies in TRAINING!

In fact, when I first hired my writer, I created a 5-day training (including keyword research, competition research, product research, writing tips, Thrive Architect tutorial, etc...) and also a mini test for him to go through. And I even paid his salary for going through my training because I don't want him to just skim through and treat it lightly. That's why I decided it's a good idea to pay him for going through my training.

Most people thought the process of outsourcing is done once you've found a good writer and he/she started writing for you. In reality, that's only the beginning.

People who think that way will most likely be very disappointed at their worker's work and may even fire him/her after some time because the works are not meeting their expectation.

Little do they know it's all about training and giving feedback, which is mostly their own fault.

Once my writer started writing, I constantly provide feedback for him to improve. I even do screencast just to show him and teach him things I want him to learn. And now, he's slowly getting the hang of it and knowing my expectations.

Little by little, he will be able to handle everything on his own without me spending my time worrying about this stuff.

To be honest, I can teach you A LOT about outsourcing because I've gained so much knowledge and experience in this. But I'll just end this part here. Hope you gained some value from this.

Mediavine Ads

Starting from September, I've also launched my Mediavine display Ads on my site since I hit 25K sessions on my site in the previous month. (That's the requirement for you to be approved for their Ads)

I'm really amazed by Mediavine Ads. They have such a high barrier to entry for good reason. They're really good at display advertising and making sure all parties are profiting as much as possible, especially the advertising companies and publishers (people who own websites).

Just because of the addition of Mediavine Ads, I earned an additional $616.79 in September. I didn't do anything else.

But I didn't inlcude this earning in my accounting as it will only be paid out in Decmeber. What I always do is I only count the payments I've actually received for the month and not the income I earned because many require a certain period to be approved and paid out.

So, if you have a site with lots of traffic, do consider Mediavine Ads. I think it's better than AdSense.

Traffic Roller Coaster Ride

This is the main struggle I encountered towards the end of September.

My traffic dropped A LOT from 2.2K visitors PER DAY to 900+ visitors per day.

In fact, 2.2K was the highest traffic I got in a day so far for my site and 900+ per day is also the lowest for quite a long time.

It's very extreme. That's why I called it a roller coaster ride LOL.

Because of this, my referrals per day drop from 30+ per day to only 7 on the lowest day.

I didn't do anything different from what I usually do. That's why I was very worries.

Upon further research, I found out that Google had another update on 27 Sept that's affecting a certain amount of websites. (Congruent with my stats here.)

That's what they called the "Google Birthday Update", LOL.

Also, September was the end of Q3 so due to all these reasons, my traffic suffered.

But fortunately, it seems to be getting back since 1 Oct from what I'm observing.

So, if your traffic also suffered towards the end of September and you didn't do anything different, just continue to monitor your stats.

It's probably because of the Google update and the transition to the last quarter of hte year.

Are You Willing to Work for FREE?

I'll end off this post with this...

A few months back, I've written a WA post called "Are you willing to work for FREE?"

I talked about the difference in mindset regarding working for a paycheck and working to build your own business.

And I showed this image to illustrate my point:

You know what?!

Recently, I was doing personal accounting and here's how my income growth looks like from Jan 2018 till Sept 2018:

Isn't that amazing?

It's exactly the same as what I illustrated a few months back!

I'm doing this full-time since Jan 2018. So, if you're working on other jobs and having other commitments, you're expected to take a longer time to achieve such results.

But the most important thing to remember is that Wealthy Affiliate works.

And whether it works for you really depends on YOURSELF!

P.S. Black Friday is coming. Have you started preparing for your promotion? I'm all geared up this year. Really excited for it!

What are your advertising strategy, if any?

Very well done Jerry, you are a force to be reckoned!! Starting from the bottom, thank you for reminding us about Black Friday. I'm putting my thinking hat on as we speak.
But on a different note, and as a part time WA member, even at a noticeably lower pace, my earnings are increasing. Proof that what you are saying is right. WA does work!!

I think your doing Great Jerry. Haven't spoke in a while but others like LittleMama, Herrin, Tony Hamilton, Nathaniell, and a host of others are doing very well. I sometimes think are they smarter than me? Perhaps, but I have been here a while and still delay in progress. I have a plan to free my time up so I can sit down and do my work. I'm right behind ya guys !............Scotty B β™«

Jerry,
You are truly amazing my friend. It makes total sense to train the writer so that they know how to prepare post with your creative style.
What do you suggest for those who aren't able to to pay a writer to be trained?
Also, advice for those not receiving enough traffic to apply for Mediavine ads?
Thank you for continuing to help others.
We really appreciate you.

Thanks Lee Ann!

For those who are unable to pay for writers to be trained, just focus on writing yourselves first. No reason for you to put extra financial burden for that.

For Mediavine, just need to post more quality and targeted content to get more traffic and then slowly you can reach the target to be accepted.

That's a nice stack of commissions! Congrats Jerry!

Black Friday at WA really is THE best!

Last year, I made 5 or 6 BF sales and really is a nice income booster, especially after Xmas when we're broke lol.

To be honest, we don't need to much other than create a blog post and share it across social media a few times over the 4-day holiday period. :)

But this year, I'm chasing that page 1 position for WA BF.

Thanks Neil! I think there are a lot more things you can do.

For example, Email marketing (if you have been building leads), YouTube videos, WA blog, personally sending PMs to your Premium members, etc.

Just giving some ideas here :)

Another fantastic update Jerry. Lots of great tip nuggets here. I’m still trying to figure out my plan for Black Friday.

But I appreciate your info on outsourcing content. I’m completely guilty of thinking it is just about writing. I am super impressed how you chose someone, designed their training and treat them more like staff than just a freelancer.

I’ve been thinking of outsourcing and well, you gave me a lot to think about.

Thanks!

Amazing stuff, Jerry!! I love your section on outsourcing. You're definitely doing it right by having your writers go through training and giving them very clear instructions. The biggest issue I have with writers is I can't keep them around! They either get burned out or end up starting their own site and doing their own thing.

The traffic fluctuations are frustrating for sure. It really sucks being at the mercy of Google so much, but I've seen MANY ups and downs over the past 9 years doing this. You've got the right idea - just keep building.

All in all, though, you had a great month and I think you'll find outsourcing to be the key to even more rapid growth for your business. Here's to a great October!!

That's why I think onlinejobs.ph is a great place to outsource content.

1) Filipinos cannot sign up for WA free starter account, unless they use VPN.
2) Most Filipinos are less entrepreneurial and most of them simply want a steady paycheck.
3) Most Filipinos are loyal and honest.

But it's all about using the right strategies to filter out people and choose the most suitable one in the recruiting process.

All the best to you too!

We shall have a blast when Black Friday comes :)

I've actually been hearing a lot about hiring writers from the Philippines. I've hired writers from other countries such as India & Bangladesh, but I always found myself editing the content to such an extent it wasn't saving me much time. From what I've heard recently, most English speakers in the Philippines write and speak it much better than some of the places I've tried, in addition to some of the benefits you also mentioned. I may need to give that a try.

Thanks for the feedback!

Very exciting news Jerry! I was wondering how you were doing.
Obviously extremely well...lol!

Thank you for sharing... that's a lot of training to your writer but I get it. It's like having someone 'think' like you. Ummm...

It takes a lot of time and patience to train.

Your income growth is fascinating... I want mine to be like that.

Thank you for sharing ... excellent results for your hard work. Well done.

It definitely takes a lot of time and patience to train but it's all worth it in the long run.

Most people simply outsource article by article and the quality will definitely be a lot different. Other hire writer but may not be able to keep them for long.

That's why I said training, feedback and focus on building a long term relationship is the most important.

Thank you for all the amazing information and most of all you honesty about how much work is involved. As the old saying goes, "if it was easy, everyone would be doing it." Right? Still, there must be away to shorten the process and I am looking to find that way. I am all about working efficiently. Our lives must have balance and working all the time is not balanced.

I keep at it and share what I discover along the way.

Congrats on your progress, Jerry! You're so right when you say that it depends on how much work we put in to see results.

For 9 months, I worked on my business part time and I'm in it full-time right now. Been writing an article a day, every single day since September 19.

Also saw a big jump in traffic from September 30th going into October 1st. I was suspecting an update and my website suffered as well. Today october 2nd, is an even better day for me traffic wise, so hopefully it's going to increase.

I'm still thinking about how to promote the WA black friday sales, but will be putting something together soon. Crossing my fingers and hoping that it will work... :)

Thanks for sharing your stats! It really boosts my motivation to keep going.

It’s amazing how much you have achieved in less than a year, you’re such an overachiever!! I’m sure you will soon join the $10K/month club!

Lol your lowest day when it comes to referrals is like my highest day. I’m so slow... πŸ˜…

I have a question: did you have to invest in Sitesell and Shopify to be able to promote them?

Thank you for this inspiring post and congrats again! 😊

Thanks Miren!

No, for Sitesell and Shopify it's free to join their affiliate program. It just happened that I had some sales then I got a bit of commission. I'm not getting commissions from them consistently because I still focus on promoting WA.

Those are the things I've mentioned on my site before so I included the affiliate link and luckily got some sales.

Yes, I know you don't focus on them as you do with WA, that's why the results are still great.
I remember reading one of your posts where you recommend adding affiliate links even if you don't recommend that product.

Also, some months ago Grace also commented that she had earned some commissions from non-recommended products so I see that visitors might still want to try scammy products even if we don't recommend them lol.

Hey Jerry... Great results. The exact same thing happened to me on Sep 27th, my traffic was in half! From nearly 2k a day, to about 800/900 a day.

So, what was the actual update for/about?! -- I hadn't been doing anything different, but thought it was because of mobile speed, so went crazy trying to change things a bit.

It's weird because after the "main," August update - my traffic absolutely increased tonnes.

Then in September, almost doubled and then dropped again by half lol....What a ride!

Do you think it will gradually go back up now?

I also joined Mediavine - just had Ads set up yesterday!!!

Congrats on your earnings, Nat
Reply
JerryHuang Premium
Thanks Nat! Google seldom talk about what the exact update is about because it's probably too technical.

Seems like we both are affected by the update. I was very worry for the past few days as well.

I guess we just need to continue doing what you have always done and wait for it to "recover".

Congrats on setting up Mediavine.

What I did was I lower the Ad frequency to the lowest because I feel they're putting too many Ads. You may want to consider that as well.
Reply
NatNiches Premium
Hi Jerry,

Yes I thought the frequency is really high, I've been experimenting a bit with it. It's been annoying where some of the Ads are as well, so I've had to try and rearrange that and I've also disabled them on some of my main posts.

I will just keep going as I was and I'm sure it will go back up gradually. It's gone up slightly in the last couple of days at least.

Have a great October! Nat

Awesome Jerry!

Thank you for your point on outsourcing the writer. I liked your outlook that it's really our responsibility to make sure that the writer knows what to do. I think I've also underestimated the training part when outsourcing things.

I believe that the key to success is also to building long-term relationships with writers. I haven't recently outsourced many articles but I think I need to get back at it and be rigorous with the training. Maybe I got a bit frustrated because the texts weren't as good when I write myself but I just need to be persistent and provide consistent feedback as you advised and in the long run it will pay off.

It's great to have a friend like you who is doing great and lifting others up. Do you know Michael Jordan's coach Tim Grover? He talks about "cleaners" who elevates also everyone else around them. I feel that you're like one of them. Check out this 2-min video :) https://www.youtube.com /watch?v=3cxIE8Rh_TM

Hey Jerry you are still amazing, when I look at the things you know I realize just how much you have learned since January. In the beginning, I learnt most from WA. Afterwards, I started trying to learn from various places. Recently, I learnt all the outsourcing stuff by reading and watching videos online.

As long as you're willing to spend the time and put in the action, you can really learn anything.

Soon we will run out of superlatives to measure your success so we will just have to craft new ones and make Wikipedia entries for them to make the general English speaking world to accept them as legit...

Hey Jerry,

Thanks for the outstanding break down of what you are doing as to how you obtain your paid writers. five pieces of content per week is that concentrated on just one site or do you have multiple sites that they will be submitting content to?

If you don't mind I am curious as to how much you are paying for your content to be written for you, if you'd rather not disclose that or if you would rather PM me regarding that information i would understand either.

Thanks for posting and sharing this,

Calvin

Hey Calvin, I only focus on one site. So all contents go to that same site.

As for the pay, I pay $400/month. I'm hiring him on full-time basis so don't pay based on the amount of content or number of words. It's like hiring an employee.
