Egg Timers and Information Overload

Paul Goodwin recently blogged about frustration, specifically from information overload and not enough time to deal with it. So I thought I’d pass on a couple suggestions I’ve learned from other sources that may work for you, too.

Usually, most of us who have worked for others in the past have become accustomed to a certain routine. We have a boss - an owner, manager or supervisor of some kind that assigns us our tasks and holds us accountable between the time we clock in and the time we clock out.

But here at Wealthy Affiliates, a lot of us have made a leap of faith; we are determined to work for ourselves and have nothing more than “log into WA” on our agenda, but no particular plan beyond that. You can easily suck up a whole day between there and Facebook and have nothing to show for it 14 hours later when you and your watery eyes finally hit the sack.

The secret is to break your day down into manageable chunks, one task at a time, and devote an allotted amount to each of these tasks. The trick is to buy an egg timer and use it. I’ve seen egg timers suggested before, but no one’s really explained what to do with it until now. So…

Write down the various things you want to accomplish and assign a time limit ti each one like this, for example:

• Check email: 60 minutes.
• “Like” and respond to WA posts: 45 minutes
• Add people to network by following them and post welcome messages on their profile page: 30 minutes
• Complete your next lesson: 60 minutes
• Break: 30 to 60 minutes
• Post a blog to WA: 120 minutes
• Break: 15
• Post a blog to your website: 120 minutes

Now you can make your own schedule any way you like, but the point is, make a schedule and use an egg timer to help you stick to it.

You can break your week down any way you like, too. You may want to devote all of one day to your own blog and the next day to your WA blog, and chat, Bootcamp or certification training and maybe watch a training video. Maybe even create one!

There are so many options within WA, that the best way to deal with it is to plan exactly what you want to do after you're logged in and stick to your allotted time. Because as Paul said,

“There is just much too much information for the a member to even try and grasp… the new member simply wants to get things done as quickly as possible and start to earn money”
You end up frustrated from TOO MUCH INPUT (information overload).

So, to sum it up - break your tasks up into manageable chunks, use the egg timer, and…

Make sure you schedule in some leisure time!

Are you still here? Go get that egg timer. You have work to do!

That was great,
Thank you.

Time management is a good thing! I use it religiously or I would be swamped more than I am! Good tips and thanks for sharing! Cheers! Dave : )

Love it Hal and thank you

Great plan! Sometimes easier said than done. Thank you for sharing.

True. But you'll never know unless you try it. You can get an egg timrt for about 5 bucks. Worth the investment to get back your piece of mind and leisure time?

Lol, That is true! Thank you.

Yes, it's the best way to go about our daily business here at WA ........by taking control of the situation. Thanks for sharing this very helpful posting.

Take care.

Johan.

That's great information Hal, thank you. Now all I need to do is apply it. I'll start tomorrow as today is almost done :)

That is a excellent idea, Thanks Hal.

Segmenting time into manageable chunks is a great idea

Great post

I have been great with my time management but reading this reminded me that I forgot something.
Taking breaks. Honestly.

Okay then. Take a break. I hereby give you permission!
:-)

Thank you :)

Actually it's almost midnight here so I guess I'd better take an overnight break, I really need it.

It's almost midnight here in Philadelphia, PA , too. G'night, then.

I'm in Ontario Canada, looks like we have the same time. I would have thought there would be a difference.
Good night
