Glen B's WordPress Secrets #1
GLEN B's WORDPRESS SECRET #1
Today I'm going to start a series of posts that I'm gong to call Glen B's WordPress Secrets. Each of these posts are gong to short secrets that will help you to tweak your WordPress to get the most out of it.
SECRET #1: Set a Default Category
You might have noticed that WordPress automatically uses the category called "uncategorized" for its default when you create a new post.
If your a savvy WordPress user you will already have categories setup and choose an appropriate one when you do your post and publish.
But what happens if you forget?
If you forget to put a category then your post goes into that uncategorized category which offers you no SEO benefits at all.
Also, it then makes it hard to find your post because it's off in no man's land.
But if we create a category that is specific to our chosen niche. One we are using to rank our site for. Then if we forget to choose a category we still get SEO benefits from it and it will be in a category that is specific to our niche.
Steps Setting Your Default Category
- From your dashboard, navigate to Settings > Writing.
- Look for the drop down called Default Post Category.
- Select your desired category and click Save Changes.
If you are not using categories on your WordPress you should it's the perfect way to categorize your posts and to help build good SEO for your site.

Thanks Glen for the share. I haven't done this to my site as yet but I will give it some love later today. Cheers mate
Thanks Glen. Right on time. I was in my site this morning and wondering about why my Posts are Uncategorized.
I followed your instructions but when I clicked on the menu, the only category I have listed is Uncategorized. Have I missed something somewhere in the last 2 months?
Sonny
Sonny, under posts you will see category and you can add some there.
Then once you have a new category you can change the default.
You can also then go back to each post and change the category. I think quick edit will allow you to easily change them.
You want to have your posts organized via categories. It makes your site neater and easier for users to navigate.

That's good Paul, Do you have your default category set to one of them? Also a suggestion to get better SEO is to use niche name reviews.

I have followed your advice.
Just one question Glen, will all my posts be categorized under the category I select?
Or,
Will I have to select a category for each post?
Thank you in advance!
Diane
Hi Daine,
If you change the name of your uncategorized to a different name then all posts will then have that category.
But I suggest setting up different categories that fit each of the different kind of topics you talk about. Then you will have to set those for each post.
Thanks,
- Glen B
Perfect!
Good looking out, Glen!

Al the best,
Diane
