Categories: Index vs No Index

A question I received recently asked about whether categories should be indexed or not. Categories are a great way to help organize your content, both for your readers and for Google itself as it helps it to understand the hierarchy of your articles.

As a rule of thumb, you don't need your categories to be indexed. For the most part, your category pages will just be listings of the articles that fit into that category without any unique or helpful content added. If you are adding unique content to these category pages like introductions or an in-depth walkthrough talking about the category itself you could choose to index them, but it's really not necessary to have those category pages trying to rank in the SERPS.

Save your indexing for your unique and helpful content like the articles you're publishing. And also remember that in the big picture of things, especially starting out, small technical aspects of affiliate marketing like indexing vs no indexing of categories doesn't mean nearly as much as focusing on publishing quality content, which we all have an abundance of article ideas ready to publish in our hubs.

If you notice you've had your categories indexed for a while now, it's really nothing to worry about. This is a very minor aspect of your business and you can change that setting and move right along. Don't let the small things take your time away from your content.

Push out that content in volume!

Mine are indexed on one site. I added details to the categories per something I read, lol.

Teri

It’s not a real make or break either way 👍🏼

Eric, I am a bit confused. After I publish my lists I go in to the published post and select the category I want to put it in. I am not publishing again. So why would it be indexed twice?

I’m not really understanding what you’re saying here but a post can’t be indexed twice. This tutorial is talking about indexing your category pages. 👍🏼

I guess I am not sure what you mean by a category page. I added a category in wirdpress and then select that category in the page I want to put in that category. Are you telling us that when we create a category it is a page?

I was wondering why all these categories and tags ended up being indexed in GSC. It is a WordPress default apparently. Thanks Eric

Yeah, not a huge deal, but they generally don’t need to be indexed and every little bit helps. 🥰

Damn!! That's why I haven't been any traffic recently!!

Great tips and advice as always bro!!

👍👍🍻

lol, probably didn't have anything to with your categories, but still a good rule of thumb to follow

I doubt it did mate, but I totally agree it's a great rule of thumb to follow!

Take care out on the streets fighting crime later buddy!!

👍👍

Always a pleasure, Eric.

Maxine :)

Thanks Maxine!

You're most welcome, Eric.
