I'm Finding CJ Affiliate Rather Annoying.

I have been looking at CJ Affiliate again over the past few days because of one of the programs I'd like to join, but boy, do I found it counter-intuitive and frustrating. Up until now I have been using Share-A-Sale, which is not so bad, but when I went to CJA, I found myself unable to even complete the sign-up.

Part of the issue is the tax information. They are telling me the following:

Commission Junction is required to collect necessary tax information from our publishers prior to processing your payments. Please choose and submit an electronic form from the list below. For assistance in choosing the required form for your business, please contact a tax advisor or visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov.

US persons

Non-US persons

I tried looking it over, but it honestly made me feel dumb. Lol. I was filling in one of the forms but didn't have some of the information they required. They referred me to "W-8 Instructions" which I couldn't even find.

I basically walked away from it. I'll find a different program to work with, annoyiing as that may be. But what concerns me a bit is that when I signed up through Share-A-Sale, they didn't ask me any of this stuff, so while it isn't an issue right now, I am hoping that won't cause me problems in the future.

I tried to search for training on tax-related stuff, but most of what I have found so far is about filing your taxes and declaring income.

I'm not going to let this discourage me, but I wish things were a bit clearer.

alot of affiliate programs and ad services that pay you, even fiverr requires a "tax id" but if you don't have a business license or tax id for a business yet you can use your social security number. I believe Amazon Associates also requires your tax or EIN number. Hope this helps

Hi Craig not to discourage you, however, you will find that will be an essential part of doing business as a "Sole Proprietor" a they will need to issue you a 1099 and not a W-2, This will be a requirement for all affiliate programs operating in US and using US -Internet & Domains.

Hope this helps, I wrote a training on how to obtain your EIN in few easy steps let me know if you need the link.

Thanks!

I always fail to mention in these blogs that I am in Canada, so sometimes the information people provide isn't pertinent to me.

I really need to look into all the tax stuff though. It may not be absolutely necessary at this point as I am not earning anything, but I want to make sure I understand everything as it becomes applicable.

I personally would be leary giving my Social Security number to a website before I even find out if I earn any money or not (or earn over the limit that needs to be reported). This is where you have to decide - do I want to get a business and LLC first where you can use a TIN number instead (and that cost money)? Or move on to another program that doesn't ask for a W-9 until it is actually needed?

I have CJA account long ago and revised after joining WA. when I interested on one of the merchant and click apply. It replied approval is from merchant and till today no new from them. JVZoo apply the same principle as CJA they need to see whether your site is relevant and perhaps up to their mark. However I found out that I received more promo than help (none) from JVzoo.. I signed up one of JVzoo program b4 WA, all I have is upswell, cross sell and down sell. Up to a point that I received 3-4 sales pitch email a day. So I ununsubribed all email from them and that may include news or useful info, may be?

That would be really annoying....

I didn't have all that hassle with CJ when I signed up about seven years ago. However, I found CJ not to be all that great in that information on products, as well as suitable images, just didn't work for me. I only made a few dollars commission and lost that due to not reaching the required level within six months. I hope you find something better Craig.

Thanks. I think I have a decent alternative now.

Good evening Craig,

I made the same experience. I also struggled with the tax form, being a foreigner, got it done in the end but as I have had no sales I got a letter similar to Amazon. A 1-month deadline to make a sale and if not out one goes.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

I honestly don't understand why they drop people for not making sales. It shouldn't really be costing them anything, and the potential remains for that person to eventually sell something. The only reason I can think of is to try to motivate people to sell... or else.

in most cases of online income .... you'll need to track ALL your earnings and then be sure to put 25% of all earrings aside while your starting out.... after you begin to make regular income you'll need to adjust this figure and getting a bit of tax advice would be prudent.....

That part I have no issue with. It's all the paperwork up front that is a bit confusing.

its a pain in the butt for sure sometimes ....

Sorry about that Craig...will have to keep those things in mind. Just about to apply to affiliates soon myself. i was thinking about Share a Sale because they have several I want to promote, being in the journaling, scrapbooking, short story writing niche.

Thanks for the heads up...what is your niche?

:)

@LadyBugLove-hello a fellow writer nee to meet you

I find Share-A-Sale pretty straightforward.
My main niche is a mix of things that might be classified as "geek culture", so things like comics, games, etc.

Thank you Craig

Hey there Theresa!!

Nice to meet you too! ;) What do you like to write about?

:)

ahhh...Cool! What do you like to promote within your niche? :)

Pretty much what I mentioned. Lol.
I used to do q weekly review of comics, but I am not reading any right now so I stopped. I have discussed games, tv shows, movies and more, but am not really doing much in the way of reviews right now, though I have a few in mind that I would like to do soon.

lol..good I'm not the only one...lol..I don't do the tax information stuff even though I took accounting in college...My husband doesn't want all that info on the internet, even in a secure site, but I was even getting confused because I have none of what they wanted as I work from home doing this stuff!! lol I just join programs that don't ask for that stuff!!

That makes me feel better. Ha ha!

I'm glad!! :) lol

Another option might be Rakuten. I've signed with them and they seem to be quite attentive. I had initially signed up with CJ but quickly became discouraged. I'm with you, I want the sign up to be simple and I don't want to jump through a huge maze of hoops. I still want to check out Clickbank and JVZoo as well. Good luck with your search. Glad all of this is not discouraging you.

Wow...didn't know it would be soo hard Sue! I'm with you, if there's problems up front, I wonder how it will be with them down the road?? Good info to know... :)

click bank as a LOT of red tape just like CJ does .... but they also have a HUGE makete-place to choose from.....

Thanks, Theresa. I appreciate the info about Clickbank. I guess you have to expect red tape with some of these platforms. I like that they have a huge selection.
