Site Comments - Suggest removing the disapprove feature

I am assuming that most of the members here at WA have used the Site Comments feature and had the unpleasant experience of having a comment disapproved.

I understand when a comment is a fluff comment, but when a member actually spends their valuable time on helping another member add value to their site and the comment still gets disapproved it can be very frustrating.

I guess you can tell that I recently had a comment disapproved. I felt my comment actually added value to the content. I made a couple comments related to the content and asked a question that if the site owner had responded to and answered could have added extra value to their post.

Unfortunately the site owner instead disapproved my comment and took away my credit.

Everyone’s time and effort is valuable. In my mind, any time and effort used to create a comment should be rewarded with a credit.

I can already here some other members shaking their heads in disagreement because they have received terrible comments not worth posting on their site.

I agree, I have too.

But I rewatched Kyle’s training that talked about the Site Comment system. And the thought that popped into my head was for WA to remove the disapprove option and keep the approve, approve and replay, and edit features.

This keeps the power with the the site owner. They get a good comment and can approve or approve and reply. But they also can edit the comment to whatever they want which will add value to their site and still give the WA member their credit.

Disapproving the comment not only hurts the other member, but it also creates a negative feel for the Site Comment system for those that feel their comment was valid.

To keep people from making a lot of fluff comments, the tool can have an approve and report option that will post the approved and probably edited comment to the site owner’s post, but it will also report the member for making a fluff comment. Too many fluff comments and the member gets put on probation from Site Comments or banned from Site Comments.

I think this is a win-win for the site owners and the members providing comments. Everyone keeps their earned credits and the site owners have value added to their posts. It promotes a positive instead of a potential negative view of that function of WA.

I totally agree. I have been rejected twice now and I truly feel that the site owner just did not feel like doing any effort to reply. I really work at making the comment applicable and to allow the site owner an opportunity to engage in an answer.

Disapprovals make me not want to comment as you do not know what the person on the other end is going to do. Not Cool!

Valid points for sure. I quite like Joe's suggestion in the comments here.

Yes because I understand why one of my comments was disapproved and the owner was even kind enough to send me a PM to explain to me before hand that they were going to do this and why. This was helpful and explained a lot. But the next time when I was disapproved I had no warning, no explanation, no anything. I followed all the rules yet was still disapproved. I worked hard and was even willing to promote the site to others to help generate sales but not now!

Tried and true

Another good option to leave comments and exchange them without having a disapproval experience is to go through the Give and Take Comment Thread. You'll see that as long as you're doing your best to leave quality comments, the less you actually look to see if they're approved or not, lol. We can't always control what the site owner does on their end, so just do your part and don't take it personally. Just keep working forward and being a great member of the community :)

I completely agree with you - I recently asked a question about what actually happens when we disapprove a comment. The general consensus I got in response was that it was best to politely PM the author so that they have the chance to correct it, and if they still don't offer a decent comment, then to disapprove it.
So, if that's the best way to deal with an unwelcome comment, it would be better for WA to put that as the option: accept or Accept & reply as you suggest.
It's a great idea!

p.s. I take a LOT of time and effort to provide a comment and it would really upset me to just receive a disapproval without any communication so I could rectify whatever the site owner thought to be the problem...

Thumbs Up from Me :)

I am kind of ambivalent Chris regarding your suggestion. To be honest wouldn't having the ability to report fluff/bad/poorly written or off-topic comments to admin staff here at WA, with that offending individual eventually being put on probation as you suggested in your blog article, Chris just the same thing as what occurs now, anyway?

A member having too many warnings now, thus too low of an approval rating by percentage value already does get put on probation also losing his/her right to participate in the portal for a period of time.

I just believe that seeing a poorly written comment waiting for approval, the original author of that article should NOT be required to spend his/her valuable time re-editing the thoughts coming from a member who did not bother to take the time to post something that truly was valuable and engaging to the topic discussed in the article.

I think the difference is allowing a valid comment to be disapproved and for that user to lose the credit they spent time trying to get.

I know the system already has the disapprove options to try to weed out those that are abusing the system. But I think the way it is implemented also hurts those trying to provide value as well.

Maybe the system should give the site owner a credit as well if they have to edit the comment.

Thanks for the comments!

I totally agree with you. I spend time reading posts and always try to add value with my comments.
I have had two disapproved.
The first called me Carlos ( definitely not my name ) and said it was more like feedback. It definitely was not. I can only assume Carlos left a bad comment and the person replied to mine by mistake or that they couldn’t actually read!
The second said that I didn’t sound like I was a member of Wealthy Affiliate... what now ? Are we not supposed to sound like a genuine reader and not from WA?
I was genuinely miffed.
And why not just edit and write a whole new comment if you don’t like it, at least you get a comment.
With Grace and Gratitude
Karen

I have 2 comments disapproved by the same site owners on two different blog posts, reason given was the comments not up to his standard. I have made researches before putting up my comments to make sure I follow the standard by WA.

I second Chris suggestion to revise the option from site-comments but change it to >
1. Approve
2. Request Rewrite (with reason)
3. Disapprove (with reason) only after 2nd re-write

:)
