Rudeness - Is There Any Need For It?

First of all I have to apologise for the image and this is not aimed at anyone anywhere. It is just because to the title of the blog. I hope nobody feels insulted by the photo.

Going back to my story anyway, my answer to the above heading is NO, there is absolutely no need for people to be rude in any circumstance.

As most of you all know I work in a job that involves dealing with members of the public. Now I was working this morning from 8am till 12 noon and when I first started it was really quiet so it was fine. As I am full of the cold and my voice was a bit hoarse and I kept coughing, I really did not want to be there to start with. a

Now earlier this year they updated and changed all the systems on the tills that we use. You would think that this is a good move - wrong, it has made things worse. The tills now go slower than what they should and finding things now takes an age.

However, the till I was on today was an absolute joke, it was so slow in scanning items, the plu group where we get all the fruit and veg and bakery items was all mixed up so the bakery was under the button for veg, the veg was under fruit and the fruit was under the down arrow.

So here was the scenario then, put together a very slow till, a printer that was taking ages to print the receipt and the fact that I was feeling so bad, it was not a good day full stop. Most of the customers I served were very understanding and laughed with me when I moaned about throwing the till out the window/. However, you can guarantee there is always the one person or persons, like today who joined my queue and as we were short staffed there were not many tills actually working.

The people in person however we not happy that I was talking to my customers while serving them and then with everything else they were heard by my friend complaining about why was I talking and just get on with it. She did apologise to them and informed them about the till being slow but they still were not happy.

By the time they got to me serving them they never even spoke which to me is very rude when you have to ask questions about certain things at the end of the transaction. It was like trying to pull teeth, getting a conversation out of them.

I was never so pleased to see 12 noon, that I can tell you. Thankfully, Friday tomorrow and then that's me off till Tuesday.

Ooooooh, I can imagine that scenario and those scenarios can be frustrating all round. They are quite common as well I would imagine.

It takes presence and if you are not in the present moment and your mind is on the next task to do, hours away, then you may not be understanding to the young lady on the check out.

It is a supermarket issue that clearly requires attention and it is not a till checkers issue and the supermarket should never make it an issue to the customer.

I would imagine that anyone who is fully employed and has a busy day, may be more agitated in this situation - however that is still their own failing, they are being controlled by the situation and not able to accept the current situation as it is.

If the supermarket cannot improve the speed of the process, then it is what it is.

All you can do Chez is remain calm and be yourself.

Wayne

Woo Hoo, thank you Wayne, someone who agrees with me and also thinks that the supermarkets are at fault.

Hope you doing good friend and that things are going well for you at the moment. |I was going to leave you a pm over the weekend so it is nice to see that you are still popping in and out now and again lol. xxxx

Hope you feel better soon, Cheryl. You're right, there is no need for people to be rude, but out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. Having worked with the public for so many years, I have learned to let that kind of stuff roll right on past me. It's less stressful that way! Thanks for the post. Get some rest! :)

You're right Colleen and you do need to just let these things go right over your head. Thankfully I never heard them, I think the way I felt yesterday I would have landed up in tears and I didn't want that either.

Anyway back today so let's just see what is has in store for us today lol. xxxx

Focus on what today holds for sure. Rudeness is toxic. We don't need it. :)

There seems to be one conflictual person in every crowd. So unfortunate. Hope you getting feeling better soon!

You are right Holly, there is always one person who just loves to moan. I was already annoyed because I felt rotten and then for the till to be so slow, there was not much I could do about that. xxxx

Hey Cheryl,
You are off over the weekend where my daughter usually doesn't work too much at the beginning of the week but come Thursday she is a busy bee until Sunday night.

Tried and True

Elaine

Hi Elaine, yes thankfully I now only work 3 days and they are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It is nice to be able to have 3 days off together.

I take it then that your daughter works every weekend. I really wouldn't like to go back to doing that again. xxxx

Hey Cheryl,
Both of my kids work long hours on the weekends and days leading up to the weekend!

Tried and True

Elaine

Hi Cheryl,
Ruddiness can seem so much worse when you are not feeling well.

However feeling great or not, there is no excuse for such blatant selfishness.

Hope you feel much better mentally and physically very soon.

Bill

Thank you so much Bill and you are right, it does seem worse when you are not feeling well and the fact that the till was going so slow was making it a worse nightmare. I am feeling a bit better tonight thank you.

Hope you are both well? xxxx

Kick back take a chill pill Monday is another day. Daily stress will kill you if you let it, don't let their rudeness or having a bad day rub off on her.

I don't let people put me in my mood, if their in a sour mood then they don't want me around them, because their attitude will not change mine mind set of having a great day.

Enjoy life its to short to sweat the small stuff!! :-D

Cheryl,
Sorry you had people treat you rudely. You are correct, there is no need for that. You were simply trying to make the best of a bad situation. Hope you have a great and relaxing weekend off from work!

Best Wishes,
Karin :)

I hope your weekend brings you smiles Cheryl
Vicki

Sorry to hear you've had such a bad morning, Cheryl.

Here's to a great weekend. xox

I'll bet if an employee of Sainsbury's was rude, they'd get the boot, Cheryl!
