Should You Get a .GURU Domain Name?
I wrote a new post on my blog and decided to share some of that info here on WA.
7 new top-level domains (gTLDs) became available for registration this week:
- .bike
- .clothing
- .holdings
- .guru
- .plumbing
- .singles
- .ventures
These domains might sound great but should you care?
I can't tell you what to do but I will tell you what I will do and why.
What Gets Ranked?
If you have been a WA member for at least a few weeks you have probably realized that .com is the best domain name you can get. Maybe .org or .net if the .com is not available. This is suggested mostly for 2 reasons:
- .com domain names rank better
- .com domains are more trusted
This is why you almost never see .info and .biz domain names. Even less often you'd spot a .tv, .mobi or .eu. These domain extensions have failed time and time again.
Now domain name wholsalers came up with a bunch of new gTLDs, hoping that you would register all of them and make the reseller rich. This is not a conspiracy theory, this is simple business.
Will I buy such domain?
I might a few of these for branding purposes. Will I build them into full sites? Nooooo... These domain names look cool but I am predicting they will follow the path of .EU, .TV and so on.
Will you be registering the YourName.SEXY? (or any other of the new domains)

Lol, people well probably be loving those yourname.sexy ones. But no I don't think I will join the hype. I'll just stick to the .com
I agree with you, Alex. I have no doubt there will be a huge grab go on in the beginning, for people who want to feel hip or trendy, but when all the dust settles, I think .com, org and net are still going to come out on top.
This opens up a whole realm of possibilities, but I'll wait for the hype to die down before I buy. So far, I think it's just kind of a gimmick, but you never know. Google may decide to weight certain extensions differently as the number of .coms available gets fewer and fewer.
I am really curious what the search engine will do with these. I think Google won't like them much because people will abuse it with the NEW Exact Match Domains.
It would be :) But what would you do with that domain? ...except bragging that about it, of course :)
OK THAT'S IT!!
My hockey gloves are coming off and your jersey is about to go over your head! ;)

Thanks for the info Alex. No - frankly I can't be bothered. They all cost and they all have to be renewed - madness.
Madness is correct, Beverley :D
