Namecheap's DNS settings

So I just bought my first domain. (Woot! Woot!) Kyle's video during training was very thorough; unfortunately, Namecheap changed their website up a bit.

The bad news: you can no longer enter the DNS names during the checkout option.

The good news: the DNS names are a permanent part of your personal settings.

If this is your first time registering a domain through Namecheap just make sure you set up an account first. It's free, and then you can get the DNS settings in place before you buy your first name. If you already have an account...well the below applies to you too.

All you have to do is go to the top left of the webpage where it says "Hi [username]" and go down to the "Manage Domains" option on the pop-up menu.

Once on that page, scroll down until you find "DOMAIN NAME" and select your newly bought domain.

After you've clicked on the domain link you'll find the second option from the top called "Domain Name Server Setup."

The DNS settings are on right there. Just put in the right Nameserver for WA and you can transfer your content over easy peasy!

I also found another setting under Manage Profile that ties back to DNS settings. I'm not sure if entering the proper Namerserver names in the Checkout settings will prevent you from having to do this in the future or not, but if you want to update those the instructions are below.

This time go all the way down to Manage Profile.

You may have to scroll down a bit, but on the left hand side you'll find the Domain Settings. Click on the Checkout Settings link.

The DNS settings is the second section. You can't miss it!

I really hope this helps any newbies avoid some of the confusion I had.

Your info has been very helpful. Thanks indeed!

When I didn't see where I could change my DNS settings during checkout, I freaked out! Then I found this!! Thanks for the helpful info!

Hi, I actually just upgraded to Premium and did all of this and then moved my siterubix site over. However, now I cant login and/or get into my site at all. Does it take a while to be able to get back into your sire before these settings work?

i believe it may take 24 to 48 hours maybe less.

It didn't take me any time at all. Give it a few hours. Maybe jump on live chat and ask what people think. But if it makes 24 hours or longer I would be submitting a support ticket.

We are up and running now and ready to roll. Thanks

Hey guys, what should I do first - Buy the domain first and then do these steps or the opposite? Thanks!

Hello:

These steps are done once you have bought you domain name.

Well I think to change the DNS for the specific domain you have to buy the domain first. However you can go into your main settings and update your checkout settings as soon as you set up an account. Either way you do it I would still check to make sure the DNS settings are in place for the.specific domain before you move it over.

Thanks!

This was awesome. Thanks so much for the helpful article!

Hi Brooke,
just used the 'transfer DNS to webhost' and it linked to the DNS settings custom nameServers page as you showed above. Just in case anyone else comes across the same problem.

Hi Brooke,
thanks for sharing, but I don't have the Domain name server setup. Mine says transfer DNS to webhost. I'm guessing that would be the right option??

Weird. Mine still says Domain name server setup when I view my domains. I read their How To guide on setting up the DNS settings and it says "Click on Transfer DNS to Webhost (or Domain Name Server Setup) to setup the nameservers for your domain" so apparently some people will see the "transfer DNS to Webhost" and others will see "Domain Name Server Setup."

Thanks for the catch on that.

This is awesome Brook.... I'll follow your steps!
Thanks a lot!

Glad I could help. I know I got confused when I bought my first domainand saw the site had changed.

Thanks for sharing Brooke!

Good advice to those who haven't set up an account with name cheap yet.

It's takes less time for the nameservers to resolve when you set them up when you register the domain as opposed to afterwards.
