Tips on How to Use Pinterest Correctly for your Business

Have you been on Pinterest yet? Do you know how to use Pinterest correctly to help give your business better exposure? Here are some tips on how you can accomplish this. First before I begin I just want to say that there are more ways to increase exposure for your website, but these are the ones I have used so far with Pinterest that seem to work quite well.

Boards, Boards, and more Boards

I enjoy Pinterest even beyond just for promoting my online business. As Kyle has said and I have said in my blogs, people are visual by nature and this is why social networks like Pinterest and Instagram have done so well. People love to look at pictures and images.

However when I am on Pinterest looking for people to follow with hopes that they will follow me back, I sometimes notice that the boards they personally pin to are at the bottom of their Profile page and all of the shared boards are at the top. The shared boards are the ones with the 3-person icon in the top right corner (See Below). Shared boards are good but when I'm looking for someone to possibly follow me, I want to see what they like to pin and not what shared boards they have.

So I am always a little discouraged about having to scroll down through all of these shared boards just to get to the personal boards that I want to see. Now being that these people are probably not pinning for the purpose of promoting an online business, they probably do not know or care in what order their boards appear on their Profile page.

Here are three simple things that you can do to your Pinterest Profile page to help drive people to your boards with the pinnings from your business.

1.Come up with a short but informative message about what your business is all about and place that in your header next to your Profile Picture. See my example in the picture above. This is something you can always change, so you should experiment to see which heading delivers more traffic, follows, pins, and likes.

2.Always make sure you include your website home page url address.

3.Strategically place your boards on your page with the most important boards that you want to get the most exposure to on your top row. To do this you can click/hold/drag your board to where ever you want to place it on the page. NOTE: Sometimes during peak pinning hours you may have to move only a couple of boards and then refresh the screen so that it saves. But most times you do not have to do that.

Peak Pinning Times…What is that?

Every Social Network seems to have a particular time and day when they get the most traffic either in clicks and/or shares. The majority of the social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn do well during the day but Pinterest is the one that does the best in the evening hours. Starting at around 3:00 PM and ending around 10:00 PM are the peak hours for Pinterest. NOTE: These times are based off of the East Coast U.S. time zone.

Though all of the social networks are always active, Pinterest is the most active during the late afternoon and into the night. This is when I do anything that has to do with Pinterest. I focus on the other social networks during the morning and daytime hours.

So those are my personal tips. If you have any you would like to share or have any comments, please leave them below. I must now get back to my blog for tomorrow on the semi-secret technologies of Google-X as well as my website content. Enjoy your evening………………….on Pinterest.

I'm starring this one.

Awesome! It's like getting a Gold Star on my school report. :-)

HaHa! I was a teacher once.

Hi Robert. I did not know that about the header, thanks. Will take a look at changing mine when I have time.

You are welcome Rick. The header is free advertising space. Better to use it rather than just leaving it blank or putting something non-relevant to your business.

I agree. Was it you or someone else who said do the same with your FB page, take a screenshot of your website and use it as your header?

That wasn't me because I do not have a FB page.

Just what I need have recently joined pin interest and still working it out, just started working on boards etc. thanks for the advice

You are welcome Cathy. Pinterest isn't that hard to figure out. After Twitter it is actually very simplistic.

I love Pinterest ! It's like a potato chip..can't have just one...I look at one thing and next thing I know, 3 hours went by!!!!!
I need to learn how to capitalize on this mesmerizing site.
Great info.

I totally agree with that analogy about the potato chip Don. Thankfully the best time to be on Pinterest is in the evening and at night so I can enjoy my potato chips when I have my other work from the day already done. :)

Thanks for sharing this information Robert.

I'm still trying to familiarise myself with Pinterest and develop a strategy that works in my favour. Thankfully I'm beginning to see an increase in people re-pinning my images but had no idea that repositioning my boards would help to promote my online business.

Btw thank you for highlighting Pinterest's peak time. In future I will make good use of the site around that time (that would be late evening/night time over here).

You're welcome Charlene. Just remember the peak time does have some differences depending which continent you live on. Regardless of where you are the best time for being on Pinterest is always early evening and night.

Robert, I have to say that I so look forward to your blogs. Not only do you make me laugh, but I always learn something I can really use. So thank you, thank you. You are a blessing.

Thank you so much Ansley for your kind words. I'm glad that people can use the knowledge that I am sharing.

Pinterest has become my favorite social media. I think a lot of us can use your helpful tips on how to best maximize the benefits of Pinterest

Wow that's great to hear Gordi, about Pinterest becoming your favorite social media site. I think I remember several months ago when you were a little reluctant about joining social media. :-)

That's okay, everyone changes once they try it and see it's not as bad as they thought it was. Though I haven't yet proclaimed that Pinterest is my favorite, Google+ is, but Pinterest is a close 2nd place.

I'm on it...thanks again. I have a great picture to pin!

Cool!

I have an account but, I must admit, I've been avoiding the inevitable. Do you think it really is beneficial? We have had a lot put on our plates here at WA and I just can't seem to find the time for everything. I pinned your post for future reference. Thanks so much.

Yes Sandy, it is very beneficial and part of the WA training. If you want traffic for your website you have to use social media to find it. You cannot rely on the search engines alone, nor is that wise to do so.

Thanks Robert, I have an account and haven't took advantage of Pinterest yet. These tips will help me out. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome Evelyn. Just remember to make sure your website content has enough images/photos so that you will have something to pin.
