HTML For beginners - website files
Hello to you all, hope everybody enjoyed the long weekend, it has been a bank holiday in the UK
Well back to work as they say, so to continue with the series on HTML, I thought I would do one more pre HTML blog on website files, on your server just to give you a basic understanding of what your website actually looks like on the server and how they are set up
Your entire website is set up using file manager and is organised in a series of files which start with a root directory, of which your domain is the name of the root directory folder
Above is a screen shot of my candy crush site from file manager ,within C panel, from my web host called hostgator, I have decided not to host my site on WA as I want access to c panel as I do a lot of work in the back end of my site, so I will be keeping my sites with hostgator
As you can see there are 4 main folders each serving a different purpose, this is only a basic over view so I wont go into it too much detail, just so you can see what it all looks like from a file manager point of view
Here I have opened up the folder called wp-content and you can see a list there, including one for plugins, this is the folder that all the plugins are kept in, so if open up the next folder you will see a list of all the plugins on my candy crush site
So you can see all the folders with each plugin listed in separate folders
One of the reasons is so beneficial to be able to have enough knowledge of this, is because you can fix problems with you site in the back end, sometime sites go very badly wrong and one of the biggest problems is plugins that cause conflict with each other, and you go to your site and all you see is a big blank white screen, this is known as the white screen of death
The way this is re-solved is by going into file manager and you can do this via FTP if you have hosting with WA and re-name the main plugins folder "plugins.deactivate" and this will deactivate all the plugins, so you can now log in to your site and reactivate the plugins one at a time to see where the conflict is
Well hope this has given you a brief snapshot of what your site looks like at the back end on your server
Until the next time
Keep on blogging
Barry

Hi Barry, thank you for the info, are you really saying that we should have a backup set up with ftp to our sites in place before the white screen appears?
Ohmygosh! I didn't know there were cheat sites for candy crush! And thanks for the good information about plug-ins, too.
