Search Results - not what they seem!

You may have seen your webpage or article at the top of the search results on Google ...

WOW! You tell everyone of your success!

You proudly brag about your successes and your top ranking on Google.

Then you hear back from all your friends, they don't see what you do ... what?

What's going on ... you search again, and Yep .. there is your post right near the top on Page 1 ...

The mystical seach algorhythm has tricked you into believing that your post is #1 on the Internet!

Unfortunately, what you see is different to what everyone else sees for identical searches.

When you search for a topic or keyword, the seach results generated are guided by thousands of different bits of information. Not only does it take into account the words you type in the search bar, but it evaluates many other factors which are unique to each user.

Search results are influenced by hundreds of factors which are stored in your extensive online profile and details of your previous internet activities:

  • Geographic location
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Sites visited
  • Hobbies and Interests
  • Marital Status
  • Education
  • etc. ...

Everyone's profile is different and the search results will also be different.

To determine the real rank you must use independent SEO services that can do a search and measure without all the personal influences that skew a search done from your own computer.

Don't be discouraged ... there are estimated to be 30 Trillion web pages in Google's index, which is now over 100 million gigabytes.

How Search Engines work:

Each search query will have thousands, even millions, of webpages that match the text you entered in the seach string. The search engine's job is to effectively filter those results, to ensure the data is relavant to you and what you "might" be looking for.

The user wants the link to the answer, not billions of webpages, so the search engine sorts through the matching results to give you useful and relevant results. The algorithms that analyze your search string, take into account

  • What is actually wanted based on the words typed?
  • What is the meaning of those words?
  • How often do the keywords appear?
  • Where on the page the words appear (Titles or body text)?
  • Does the pages include relevant content?
  • Is the page in your preferred language?
  • The freshness of the content?
  • The number of times your search terms appear?
  • Does the page have a good user experience?
  • Is the site trustworthy and secure?
  • Does the page have reputable links to it?

The goal of each search engine, is to understanding exactly what you mean and giving you back exactly what you want.

It is a daunting task, but Google and other search engines manage to sift through the data to provide the most relavant links possible, customized for every user!

Happy searching and SEO success ...

I think I will discover the Meaning of Life before I understand SEO and Google "AlGore"ithims.

Thanks Allan!
I did not know that.
Love it when I learn something new!
All the best.

Good post, Allan.

Many people make the mistake (myself included in the past) of using the browser that has all of their history on it.

To get more accurate results,

You can do as jvanjes suggests, or you can open a guest window to view objective results.

Might be an easy fix for most involved.

Thanks for sharing,

Paul.

Search incognito. This will give you the exact ranking.

Yes, good suggestion ...

Very interesting, Allan...thank you.

Thanks I learned a lot here.
Blessings

Thanks Boss ,
Great Info in your article , and :
Yep , Sometime I have seen crazy results by google , very crazy results , some times the opposite of what you are searching for .

My personal analysis , Google is Just a Machine
That machine is coded by- not that clever - humans ,nothing more.

Thank you Allan! I have 10 keyword searches in the top 10. I was not sure why I didn’t find them when searching the terms .

It makes sense now.

All the best,
Doug
