Well, I Got Into YouTube Sooner Than I Expected (Uh-Oh!)
So...
I read a few success stories here on WA about YouTube marketing (Dylan, Tiffany, Chris aka Benji's Dad) and I was eager to get started too.
I started watching more videos on this, including Jay's live webinars here at WA.
And thought I'd start with my experience on making money online channel or a channel that's related to my Amazon niche site (tech-related).
While I was "thinking" it turned out that my sister in law who's a PRO when it comes to nails started making videos and sharing on Instagram.
And apparently even created a channel as well.
Problem was that she has NO idea how affiliate marketing works and has zero knowledge on SEO.
Not only that she hates that stuff.
When she realized that this is exactly what I do (with websites), we decided to combine our forces and make that channel work.
So...
- She creates how-to tutorials on nails art, takes pics and edits her videos.
- I optimize the channel, videos, add links and everything else on SEO/affiliate marketing.
And it's a great experience for me too before starting my own channels on MMO and tech gear!
Crazy how life turns out.
I got into YouTube sooner than I thought lol.
Lesson:
Keep your ears and eyes wide open if you don't want to miss out on opportunities, and use your strengths to your advantage!
Looking for your feedback:
I'd love to hear your feedback on videos, thumbnails etc.
We're shooting with iPhone 8+ for now but IMHO the quality is pretty good for a new channel. Any tips/suggestions are appreciated!
The channel is called Trendy Nail Secrets.
(Originally she named it Toronto Nails School but I advised her that it's very limited. She wanted to keep TNS abbreviation because she has certificates, so I came up with Trendy Nail Secrets. What do you think? :D)
P.S.
I'm looking for feedback here, that's why I'm sharing the link here.
I'm not sharing any affiliate links here. As far as I know Kyle allows adding links to WA posts that isn't blunt self-promotion/affiliate link baits but let me know if I'm in a dangerous territory here, and I'll check with him personally.

I highly suggest you watch all of Brian Deans videos on YouTube SEO, the guy knows his stuff. Are you using Vidiq or TubeBuddy to optimise your channel?
Yeah, I watched his videos some time ago, implementing his tips too but will have to re-watch them again. For now, we're just trying to get things done without overthinking it. And I use the free version of VidIQ. Which one is better this one or TubeBuddy?
I use TubeBuddy but I hear both are similar so I don't think it matters which one you have. However, I do think it is best to upgrade to one of the paid subscription plans if you can. One of the best features I love about TubeBuddy is its keyword research tool and tag suggestion tool. Both really help in choosing the correct keyword to target and the tags to use.
Thanks for your suggestions, Minhaj! At the moment, I'll use the knowledge I have on keywords and create ones based on the videos my sis in law creates and when we're ready, I'll upgrade.
Onwards and upwards!
Don’t worry about a thing regarding family being in business together. Debs got her son in as her referrer in WA. It sounds like you got a good implementation strategies. Go for it.
Well, referring family members to WA is slightly different than actually working on a business together :) but as Tiff suggested, we'll have to treat it as what it is, a business.
I think that's cool. Sounds like a business partnership brewing. Make sure you talk about how you'll be splitting the money before it gets awkward or one person feels they're carrying more work than the other.
It's easy to take for granted the work you don't do, and that's how opportunities that were once good can turn sour.
I like the name though. Best wishes and I'm hoping you get everything you're looking for it and more!
My sis in law herself said that we split 50/50 (at least for the first 6 months before we see what channel grows into), so we'll keep it at that and focus on doing what we do best.
I know it's a bit risky to do business with friends/family, but hopefully money won't be the issue!
It's gonna be a good practice for me for sure. Thanks for your input, Tiff :)
Business with friends and family can be done, but you just have to treat it like business: put things in writing, separate the formal from informal, and so on. You know this because you went to law school. Haha.
Actually it was university undergrad program, not actual law school haha. I'll talk to her about this for sure, thanks for the reminder!
You have come upon a great opportunity. So glad for you -- what a nice way to learn the YouTube stuff. Hope it goes well.
Thank you Fran!
I love Edison's quote: "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." And I try to keep my ears/eyes open for new opportunities :)
Wow, awesome Zarina! That's great to jump into it and get that experience before getting into your own!
Nice channel! Thumbnails are so cool and the music definitely sets the vibe! I also like the channel name - it's catchy!
Great job as always :)
Hey Robbie, thanks a bunch for your support!
The videos and music = my sis in law does all that, it'd probably take me forever to find the right one haha. And her niche doesn't even require talking if she doesn't feel comfortable yet.
But it's a GREAT practice indeed because my sis in law can really pump out videos regularly, and I'll do the job that I like and that she hates 😄
Funny thing with the name, my sis in law is like: "Whatever you come up with, just have TNS abbreviation."
Had to use google and thesaurus, and quickly came up with Trendy Nail Secrets. Definitely better than Toronto Nail School (she did private group classes in Toronto but it no longer applies online).
Thanks for your input man, appreciate it :)
Sounds like you guys have it all figured out! She's really talented by the way - like that's insane!
Cool! The name definitely sticks! Have fun with it :) And anytime!!
Ohhhh yeah! Today we found out that the nail company even tried to sell the courses under her name here in Toronto. That's how pro she is, everything nail related she can do it, it's crazy.
Thanks man, can't wait to grow :)
Congrats on the early “launch” into YouTube. Be sure to keep us informed as to how it goes.
I eventually would like to do one of my own...however my 9 year-old daughter is eager to do her own channel and has been talking about it long before I started here at WA.
So, I may be getting into it sooner than I expect...just like you. I fear I’m just not ready yet.
I wish you the best and I hope it is a smashing success!

Bob, one of the famous video influencers Sean Cannell keeps saying "start before you're ready". You just need to take that step. I know it's scary and likely LOTS to learn but you need to take that step.
And if you do it with your daughter it's even better, it's empowering to have a family member who's on the same "vibe" as you.
Plus, by staying consistent you'd likely improve the quality of life for you AND for your daughter (when she grows up she'll have a massive following and possibly a passive income).
That’s why I do support her on this. It would be awesome to see her build a huge following.
Have you heard of Team Edge on YouTube...she’s a big fan and all their associated vlogs. I think that’s where she got the bug to do this.
Thanks for your words of encouragement, I guess whenever she is ready is when it’ll happen.

Thanks for the tips Zarina.
It has got me thinking.
Gladly!
