1: Bookmark Training/ Take Notes!
Despite the fact that it says on my profile I joined WA last year, the truth is that for many reasons, not least of which was an abruptly and catastrophically dead hard drive in April, I didn't start my WA training until the beginning of last week.
I have learned a lot since then but, aside from having the mysteries of niches and keywords, SEO and Jaaxy revealed to me, one of the most important lessons I have learned is that you can't just go fumbling around the WA site watching amazing training videos and then expect to find them again if you don't bookmark them. Or keep written notes. Or both.
I lost the whole of yesterday trying to track down videos I had watched and it was a complete and utter and ridiculous drag.
Now, with a determined chin and prim lips- 1950s schoolmarm style- I am methodically bookmarking everything and taking notes.
Why take notes too? Well, it may be just my learning style, or the traditional way in which I was educated, but I have found that following along with a video on, say, how to move my Godaddy domain to WA hosting is one thing. It was great- I managed perfectly. But when I tried to replicate the actions on my own a few days later, I had no real idea of what I had done and couldn't do it. I had retained very little.
I'm actually trying to learn this stuff, and not just do it. I want to learn how to change the nameserver so I can do it again in the future with my other sites and not just follow mindlessly along with a video but be unable to do it again next time.
So. Because of this, I'm going to approach this wonderful WA site as the place it is. It's a university, and the tutorials and videos are the lectures. Hence I now take notes.

After reading your profile page, and this blog, I just knew I had to follow you. We have a number of things in common, love of nature, love of teaching, and a need to take command of our own destiny.
Personally, when I watch these videos or lessons I keep Word open and am constantly taking notes. I then save links to things I may want to review later. I keep them in Excel along with all the various passwords.
I have to write everything down anymore. I tell people it isn't because I'm getting old, it is just because I have so much important stuff in my head, there just isn't any room for any more.
Nah, nobody falls for that one either.
Wishing you great successes in all your passions and endeavors.

Hey Kali!
I checked out your website only yesterday! I like it a lot.
I think it's wonderful that you devoted yourself to taking care of your brother after his accident. It makes me think of the Neil Diamond song 'He Ain't Heavy' (I don't mean to be trite. I just love that song. Just thinking about it in my head is making me almost cry..!)
I'm very close to my two brothers, and although I live a long way away from them now (across the pond) I hope that I will be able to be there for them if they ever need me. That's part of my motivation for doing WA. I want to be able to make a living online so that if my parents or brothers, or friends need me, then I can just grab my laptop, hop on a plane and be there for them, without having to give up my day job to do so. That would be true freedom.
There is a Spanish saying, usually said to someone who has done a selfless act for which there is no obvious immediate or tangible reward: 'Your reward shall be in heaven.' In your case, however, it sounds as though, from the joy with which you talk about having taken care of your brother, you felt being there for him was your reward. How cool is that..
I look forward to watching your business progress Kali! It's a great niche! Good luck!
In my outpourings over brothers (whom I'm clearly missing a lot right now!) I forgot to say good on you for keeping your info on Excel. That's impressively organized.
Good tips. I really need to get organized as I'm starting to dig in to some trainings as well. Writing really helps me retain information too. :-)
Yes, writing something down is more active than just reading something, or watching a video, and helps me remember stuff too.
Yes Kyle and others are great at helping with remembering where to find the training you forget. they are good at finding the links. I am very bad and notes I have them everywhere written, cyberly not a word I know. and on my computer. One day I need to put them in just one place. Problem is that place changes upon my mood and just forgetting I have a place lol.
Have fun :O)
Kymee
Kymee, save your notes in a Document or a spreadsheet on your Mac. They will always be there when you need them. I lose little pieces of paper. The people who make Post-Its know I will never find those scraps.
Kali
You see that is my problem, everyone has advice on where to put things I listen. "say that is great" and I put things there then someone else comes along and they say.....
there I go again. so I have things everywhere. wunderlist, google docs, exel, notes on my Mac, and really there are more. I think some day I will see which one is better for me and will do just that.
I have list all over the cyber world lol.
I guess I won't lose them I just can't find them.
Thanks I am hopeless
Kymee
PS my husband is the annal organized one in the bunch (shrug)
Kymee, it is hard keeping track of stuff! All those great ideas! Those keywords! Niches! Contacts! Argh!
Now I just use a plain old composition book and/or bookmark things on my browser under folders. The more complicated I make things, the less I seem able to find what I need.
Have the composition book sitting right here I have folders on my computer docs and folders on my yahoo. Oh and I have droplr. Like I said I need to find one that will make me happy and stay with one......HMMM I still think that I am hopeless.
I find stuff it just take me a little.
Oh you're way ahead of me on organization. I just keep everything in Excel and Word. It's kind of like my car keys. I have to put them in exactly the same place every day or I'll never find them.
If I had my notes in a bunch of different places, I would never be able to keep up with them.
Guess, I'm just losing it - so I keep it simple for simple little ol' me.
I'm proud of you. You are making great progress. I share the same frustration from time to time. Taking notes is a good way to remember as is immediate application of concepts. Live chat is helpful since Kyle is often on with lots of the big dogs....I refer to Rich of course(ha,ha)...who are willing to jump in with solutions and links to help my temporary memory lapse.
Thank you! Yes, Rich! How does he find time to do anything in life when he's helping people like us all day???? He has already answered several of my questions. People are incredibly helpful here.
I am looking forward, by the way, to reading your latest blog post! It looks very interesting! Authority sites! I hope to have one of those before too long... :oD
I'd recommend signing up to Droplr http://www.droplr.com it has a myriad of uses and it's a great way to create http://d.pr/i/FN6h There's some training here: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/droplr-capture-share-images-text-links-videos-more Rich.
Rich,
Thank you so much for sending out that info! I have now bookmarked the link. How efficient and methodical of me! :oD
Everyone learning style is different and what may work for one won't work the same for others. Thought note taking a great way to underline all the key parts. Some times i do screenshots so i can remember it more vividly.
Rich,
Thanks for all those ideas! I shall look them up when I have a mo. For now though, I'm going to stick with my spiral bound notebook... she said, feeling very non tech and mid 20th century....
Hey Rich!
You mentioned Wunderlist yesterday and I signed up for it, but haven't really worked out how to use it. I am currently sticking training under sundry Safari bookmark folders I've created. It's just at the top of my screen and easy to jump to. Do you think Wunderlist would be easier to use... ? Also I can shorthand my notes by hand in a notebook, but typing them out would be fiddly...
Aw, OK. It's entirely personal preference. If you're on a Mac then I use URL Manager Pro http://www.url-manager.com/ for bookmarking and VoodooPad http://www.flyingmeat.com/voodoopad/ as a scrapbook. You can use Wunderlist across devices, ie. if you have a smartphone and tablet as a to-do list, etc. Rich.
I use a variety of dedicated software to bookmark and keep track of notes, etc. I can recommend Wunderlist http://www.wunderlist.com as a basic to-do, bookmarking, notetaking app which is available across platforms and devices, which means you can keep everything with you on the go. :) Rich.

Organization is the key to this stuff. WA has some great tools for that as well. I've found that the Search Bar at the top of your screen (except the Classrooms) goes a long way to helping you find what you were working on.
There is also a neat little My History menu item that will show you the last 10 things you touched. I think it needs more items but that is just me.
If you are comfortable with writing notes that is good too. I actually have a composition book that I use for miscellaneous notes. Of course it is always by my side during the Live Video Classes. Jay has so many good ideas that need to be preserved.
Hey Labman!
I've wrestled with the Search Bar a few times and for a while I was moaning about it because I couldn't get it to work. Then I discovered it won't look up things I paste in. I have to type them. Then it finds them just fine. Do you find it does that with you?
I haven't seen any video classes by Jay yet. He sounds like an exciting teacher.
Thanks for the tips! I also use a composition book for my notes. We share the same high-tech methods! ha ha!
