Facebook Blueprint Training Module 7 - Introduction to Instagram
As almost everyone knows, Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012, hence the latter's inclusion in the Blueprint training.
Well .. this one was an eye-opener. It gave me a different perspective on Instagram. It maybe a "coloured glass" perspective because it must be remembered the Module is written by the owners from a marketing planning/advertising perspective. It is not an "Instagram training" (there are a lot of those on WA already and even more if you Google it), but rather an insight from a marketing perspective
Perspective
To get a perspective, this is Instagram's stated Mission and Values:
- Mission: to capture and share the world's moments.
- Core Values: Passionate Community, Creativity, Visual Language
My take on the early part of this module is that Instagram is promoted as a big community just having fun and sharing visual moments.
Instameets are introduced which are local communities of Instagrammers getting together for pics and sometimes extending it as a community event such as a "cleanup". It is all "very nice".
And unlike Facebook you can have more than one Instagram account.
Some Statistics (these are Instagram's internal statistics)
- Over 95 million photos and videos are contributed by people everyday.
- The community now has over 600 million monthly active users with over 400 million of those Instagrammers visiting the app every single day.
- 150% increase in time spent watching video on Instagram in past six months. (to June 2016)
- 80%+ of the community is outside of the US.
What it is really about .. "my take"
Instagram may have started in the almost alturism of the Mission and Vision above .. but is really now about brands and branding. The last part of the module talks about growing your audience by making Instagram part of your day-to-day business and marketing.
