Recently, I tested the capture page on my new blog. I used a little used email account and a specific name to test the autoresponders. Within a few days, I started getting unsolici

Is the little-used account you used a gmail account by chance? There's been a lot of talk about google scanning emails sent through gmail. (I'm not sure if this has been confirmed or not.)

No, it's not a gmail account. It's a local isp, same as my cable provider.

Do categories affect seo?

Thanks for responding. So, if the categories happen to be keywords, it won't affect rankings?
I may be making this more complicated then necessary.

Jason summed it up well!

They dont effect seo, when you buid up the number of posts you have, you may want to categorize them to help people who come to your site to find exactly what they are looking for, I have been here 3 months and have not done this but it is something I'm considering to do soon,

Jason's got it - it's for your visitors (ie. real people) to be able to narrow down your posts/pages.

Search engines index your content - not which categories they are registered under - they will decide how to rank and list your site.

Cheers, Mark

to determine interest in a niche.

You have to find a niche that you're passionate about. Something that interests you. This way, you can write good quality content.

Then, start typing in different keywords and see how many competing pages there are.

before I choose a domain, etc?

You can just do a test siterubix site up if you want to check the themes, you can always cancel/delete it later if you want.

Thanks Russ. Before I asked the question, I had clicked on "Build My Website", and went directly to step 3, "Choose a Look...". Then, when nothing happened, I asked the question. When I went back to build my website after reading your response, all of the available themes had popped up. All 1392 of them! Don't know why they hadn't loaded the first time, maybe I was just impatient. Thanks, again.

There are countless free themes to choose from. You can start previewing them here http://goo.gl/ubGbfQ

Thanks Shawn, lots to choose from.

Hi, you can't! First buy a domain name, then move your free website to your domain, then you'll get to choose from 2400 themes. I hope that helped.
Don't worry if you can't choose the theme before you buy, you'll have plenty of time to choose after you create your website. Good luck, and send me your website.

Or is the content more important to generate traffic to a blog?

Hi John,

No, a keyword rich domain is not necessary at all when choosing your name. You want to choose a domain name that describes your website. In some cases that will be a keyword that dose have traffic and that can help you rank for that ONE keyword phase.

Keep in mind that a keyword rich domain name only helps you rank for that ONE phrase. Your goal is to rank for 1000's of keywords/phrases that people search for.

Choose a domain that people can look at and get a good idea of what your website is all about. It needs to be 100% relevant to what your niche is looking for.

Here is some training on this:
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/website-development-programming/how-to-choose-a-proper-domain-name

Content is what drives traffic to your website, and the titles of your pages/posts. Your domain name should be relevant to your niche so that people click on your site, but the domain name is not going to be the determining factor whether you rank or not. The content is 100% the most important aspect of ranking.

Hope this helps,

Carson

I'm wondering about this same question, but I've noticed that your answer here, Carson, was 3 years ago. Does this answer still stand even for 2017 and beyond?
