When You Dont Know What You Dont Know

The truth of the matter is that I didn’t know I was going to be posting this particular content now. It was meant to be something else.

I wrote a post a short while ago on this subject of not knowing what we don’t know. I copied it to paste into the appropriate field of WA, but the post did not appear! It was quite weird as another document open on my computer appeared instead of my work.

I went back to my computer to find my post, but to not avail, it was gone!

I certainly didn’t know I was going to lose my post and it is so disheartening because I know it was well written and interesting, even though I say it myself.

I just can’t write that post again. It flowed from my thoughts and now it’s gone – like water down a drainpipe!

Rather than waste all that time I am using this as a reminder to continually save all your work as you go.

It was my belief that Microsoft Word automatically saved my work as I typed it. How wrong could I be!

It’s a learning curve, even after all my years of producing content on Microsoft Word.

Whatever platform or resource you produce your content on, be certain to stop and save it periodically throughout the process.

Don't let it happen to you!

Cheers.

Enjoy your wonderful life. It is precious!

Valerie,

Have you tried OneNote? That package is also by Microsoft and it does save your content automatically.

I try to make sure I save every 5 mins or so.

Thanks for that suggestion Mathew. I haven't tried OneNote. I'll have a look at it.

I'm pleased to see you save about every 5 minutes. I need to follow your example :)

thanks for reminding.. :-) It happened to me too, I thought it's auto saved..

Thanks so much Marissa for your comment. I'm sorry it happened to you too. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Hi Valerie a very good reminder, I have been caught out on numerous occasions, luckily they don't happen that often, my key is to take regular breaks and I have made friends with ctrl+ S kind of does the trick.
One of my goof-offs is when I am shutting down at the end of the day and I have 50 gazillion files open and when I am closing them down I forget to save before closing. Not so good.

Thank you Alexander. I appreciate your comment. I've never used ctrl+ S. I must start doing that as it's simple enough to do.

And, as you say, shutting down with heaps of files open can be a hazard. I haven't yet lost anything with that action, but one never knows!!

Valerie, Thanks for the reminder. Believe me, you are not alone. I have lost so much good contents until it seems unreal. I sure am learning the trick of the trade everyday. SAVE YOUR WORK!

Everytime you think about it just do it very often. You know I got so tired of losing my good contents, I just decided to hand write a rough copy before I start to process my work.

At leaset you will have a very rough copy on file. It really pays to do so.

Louisa, you are brilliant. I never thought of handwriting a rough copy. If I'd done that, even just a few words of each paragraph, I could have re-written it as I would have had some structure.

Thanks so much for your comment and your help :)

That's a hard one to have to learn....

It certainly is Netta!
Thanks so much for your comment. I greatly appreciate it :)

Know exactly how you feel & what you are saying Valerie, as I have done the same before but know better now... Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks Linda for your comment.
No doubt it had to happen to me at some time. Like you, I've now learned my lesson!
Great to hear from you :)

My previous computer learned me that, because it went off when the temperature was too high, leaving me with nothing. So I save continuously now

That was a good way to learn Loes. It would have made the process an automatic function for you. Nice one!

Good? It was a very annoying way, but I learned it:))

Yes, the more I learn here at WA, the more I know what I don't know! :D

But, there must be a File with the Recent Documents you used, as Jackie mentioned!?

I find it when I open a Word Document, then File and you find something like Recent work (my one is in German) and a whole list of your recently used word documents opens!

Hope it's saved...

Gerlinde

Thanks very much Gerlinde for your comment. I do appreciate it.

Unfortunately the document isn't in Recent Documents. It is nowhere to be seen!

It's a lesson for me to be more careful about saving. Very often when I start a document I save as soon as I have typed the heading. I didn't do that in this case, so not even can the heading be seen!

I hope all is well with you Gerlinde :)

Sometimes, when I open a new Word Document, it asked me, if it should Auto save the last one I opened which I did not save... This could be another option...

Yes, I also try to save all Documents at the beginning, when I am in a hurry, I don't do it...

Thanks, I am ok... thanks for asking! :)
Hope, your life is - more than - ok, too?

Gerlinde

There is much I could do to help myself to not lose content. I'll certainly be more aware from now on.

Thanks Gerlinde for your help :)

Yes Valerie, it is such a bummer when that happens. Experienced that many times. Can you have an automatic save put on your PC? I remember there was also a file that had recent work on it and that might be a place you might retrieve your work? I switched to apple a while ago and write all my work in pages and it automatically saves... yeah! Maybe microsoft has that ability? There must be a computer person out there that could help. Good Luck. Best wishes Jackie

Thanks so much for your comment Jackie. As you say, there will be somebody who can help me. There are computer companies quite nearby, but I'll have a look at the Microsoft settings. I am sure that Word used to automatically save and I think this could be a result of the upgrade to Windows 10 last year. Maybe there is a setting to be clicked on! I'll investigate.
I hope all is going well with you :)

I'm sorry you lost your first thought, Valerie, but happy it resulted in this one. It's a great reminder to save. And hopefully, the other will flow back to you another time.

Thank you so much Hal. I do appreciate your kind comment :)
