It's OK To Be A Little Selfish

Two weeks into applying the training in WA and enjoying the great community here I am more convinced than ever that there simply is not a finer site to be found anywhere. While the training is top notch, the support from others with similar interests is truly superb.

Many of us come from very similar experience with our past endeavors to learn internet marketing. We have spent far to much money and listened to far too many empty false promises. One way or another we all have come to discover the WA community and it quickly proves to be a breath of fresh air. Most of us not only desire our own success. We want to help others avoid many of our past experiences. It is in that spirit that we quickly begin spending a lot of time interacting with community members and offering assistance where we can. It is what makes WA so special but can also be the very thing that slows our own growth.

I remember well the advise of a financial consultant. Many years ago, he advised me to save first and budget around it. That advise served me well over the years. Savings were always budgeted first and living expenses were budgeted with the remaining resources. In this way, my savings goals were always met.

When I face the overwhelm of lessons, moving consistently forward with my business, and being a contributing member of this great community, the advise of that consultant comes to mind. My first responsibility is to myself in making my business the best it possibly can be. While I certainly want to be a good community member, I feel I can best serve this community by being the best I can be so that when I contribute it will be by way of successful experience. Yes, I have decided it is ok to be a little selfish.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

You have to fall down to learn how to get back up ! After many years in Sales Management and seeing people come and go that is the one thing that really stuck in my mind. Go for it and if it does not work you will get the best training from the mistakes you made. Persist and turn your mistakes into successes. The community here are all doing this. Right!

You can always dig into your personal business and then if you need a break, dig in at WA to help or assist. Moderation so you don't burn out at either end of the spectrum. I think a lot of folks get worried about the so called "rank".. Doing a bunch of empty blog posts just to get a brownie point or following every last member probably is not the most efficient way to use your time. Rank gets better the longer you stay and takes care of itself. And same for you, take care of yourself and that's the best way to be a long haul asset to everyone. After all if you don't take care of business you can't be around to take care of anyone else either.

I wholeheartedly agree. But I don't consider it selfish. It's very difficult to provide info help to someone if you aren't succeeding. You make a very good point.

I agree with you, we are here to create a business first and show that the training works by showing the success that our business has become. As an example, I'm back to some basic learning about keywords because sometimes we have to take a step back before we can move forward. This was a great post, thank you.

Amen to that! I already see that if one is too much of a social butterfly it can be a great excuse to do Not Much business in the name of community. In ALL things moderation.

The Key to life is balance--Each one must learn the right one for their lives --IT's not selfish to be in balance. I like your post--it will help us to check our balance of helping and helping our selves as we help others.

Trish, I have to agree with you. Stay focused on your training and on building your business. When you have it up and running and have added good quality content to the extent you are getting good rankings on the search engines, then you'll have a little more time to help others. Meanwhile, interact with others with your training assignments. Several of them will ask you to join a discussion or to review a peer's website. That will get your feet wet, but it won't distract you to the point it slows down your training. There is a lot going on here that can sidetrack you in a hurry if you let it. Keep your focus!

Pat

Sorry, I was trying to edit my reply then accidentally deleted it.
Like your post. :)

Although I'm not speaking for anyone else, I think many might agree with you that it's best to first focus on your goals, since that's the reason you joined WA. :) I find that many of the tasks associated with training are interactive so you can be involved with the community as you learn and move along. I agree that you can best help others once you have experience.
