I am stranded in Paradise. We actually have a lot to be thankful for, but like many others over here at Wealthy Affiliate we could use some extra income. For the last 7 years have worn the hat of Kona Coffee Farmers.

We knew it would be hard work, and frankly we did not come here to drive a Lexus or have a mansion as a home -- but then we did not expect to exactly be living on such a limited budget either. Our intention was to build up the business and it should do well enough that we could delegate some of the tasks like weed whacking. We are all organic -- so no poisons for us! Unfortunately the weeds grow, and we are still whacking them ourselves -- whoops, after 7 years that can get pretty old.

We grew the business from scratch (well the land was here and the trees were here), built a wet mill, built a dry mill, built a storage facility, a drying deck, designed the labels, figured out all the processing parts. Figured out the marketing bits.

Then every year we go out (basically to our back door!) and hand harvest, process the beans from the field to the bags. -- we do it all, and every seed we probably at some time or the other we have touched before it goes to the customers' coffee pots!

We actually built up a good customer base.

But mother nature has been changing. Like many other parts of the world, unexpected weather patterns have come to make our trees not as productive as they once were -- so we actually have too little product to go around for the demand.

So, we still need to take care of the farm but how do you get more income? And we are not exactly spring chickens -- already turning over that magic 60 mark!

I've been curious about internet marketing but every time I have looked I get simply overwhelmed at all the offers.

I've taken a few courses that claimed they would teach me how -- somewhat applied to just straight marketing of Kona Coffee, but for the most part the courses lead to dead ends. As many of you have said in your own profiles -- the implications were sugar coated or blown way out of proportion to facts.

We also have dabbled very recently in MLM or network marketing -- some of those people do seem to make money but it is basically a hard hearted game of churning people. Often people who did not have money to invest to lose. I could not stomach that, where a very select small percentage of an organization would benefit from the downfall and collapse of the majority under them. Two or three make money at the expense of 15 or 20 a year they churn thru and take their money.

So back to looking, and happened upon this resource here. I have actually been here before, it was not all unfamiliar. I think last time this was a relatively new organization and I thought -- yeah there will be a recurring monthly charge for anything good and I've been there done that. At that time there must have been little to validate the structure.

Well, this time I took the leisure to look at people's history trails. Not everyone is coming out smelling like roses, but there are people on here that have remained for many years. There are people on here who go out of their way to reach out and help. That's worth it to me to invest $19 to go my first month to dig even deeper.

I appreciate all those who have taken the time to send their virtual pats on the back and handshakes. I not only want but really need to do this, and from what I see, it is possible. Not like the scenario of the one person in 20 million that wins the lottery, or the 2 dozen people out of 20000 that make a Mac App Store App that makes them wealthy -- but just an opportunity for regular hard working folks. Like anything I know it won't be 100% of everyone that comes out on the other side with results, but at least it won't be 1% or 2% getting results like it is in MLM! Or 0% from all the sales sites that basically just want to sell you programs and get you to contribute to their mailing list size.

So we are here on the Big Island in Hawaii, where the weather is usually nice, but up at our elevation these days just too much rain. We have peacocks that honk and wake us up in the morning. Three dogs that were given to us that we have taken in and love like they were children. We can go out and when in season pick an avocado, an orange or pick a sack of lemons and make a lemon pie! We are about 15 minutes to a beach where sometimes you can swim with dolphins..

Visitors tend to call it paradise, for us it is more paradise lost at the moment :)...

....living a bit close to the bone as far as the bank account, but with some hope in our eyes from finding (again) this wonderful community.

...looking forward to growing with you all, surviving, and then sticking around for those who come in the future to turn their lives around for the better as well..for the long haul as they say!

ALOOOHA,
Mike

Sorry for tardy reply -- I have been away from WA for couple of months studying some other rather advanced IM and SEO courses -- the farm had coffee trees established but the prior owners never processed it they just sold the raw product. We built processing mills and storage facilities and installed all the roasting, packaging areas and everything never left the farm except to mail to the customers! Thanks for the follow and I'll be following you back!

Hey Island Mike, thanks for the follow. I have been to HI and think it is beautiful. I've surfed and have felt the warm sand underneath my feet. You mentioned in an earlier post that you have a website. I know the key to making money online if you have a website will always be getting traffic to your site. Is that site still up? If so I would love to take a look and post a few comments for you maybe get a like on facebook. I am new here so I have a lot to learn but the further I go the more ideas I get and the excitement grows. I hope you feel that passion and wish you the best of luck and quick success. Have many websites most are just support to brick and mortar or professional people, vacation rentals, and of course we have a coffee site and a separate site that handles sales. I guess you would call them business sites -- not meant so much to monetize as lend support to the business. Of course the coffee site sells but those that come are already pre-qualified and not too much magic but common sense to get them to buy.

So far here still a student, although I have ended up helping a few other people with their niches.

Eventually I'll come out of the rabbit hole -- but so far I've been investing in skills neglected and somewhat new to me from here, and some days I spend much too much time in these blogs!

WA is designed to encourage a community feel to it. It helps you to feel connected and also build up your network so you know enough about other members to contact them for specific things -- like just yesterday I got an email from someone in Thailand saying one of our websites was not showing. I could not confirm it, but I knew I had friends on here from Thailand or the Philippines so I was able to reach out for help to people that could look from that area.

WA software will give you a better rank when you do participate in such things as adding friends and when people add you and your then add them as your friend. And you get better rank for responding to posts when you think you have something to say, or liking comments made to you, or liking posts and vice versa. -- You get a sort of brownie point for being active.

You don't have to be obsessed about it -- the people that rank the highest just have a lot of time to do so -- and that is not for everyone. Your primary objective should be to go thru the courses and let that lead you to achieve your objectives. There are lots of folks who are implementing the material in the world of internet marketing that don't have the spare time to also be on here in the posts. Totally nothing wrong with that.

But especially when you are newer -- so much to learn, and it can seem a daunting effort -- people who are experiencing the same thing or who have been there and done it can be very supportive and that can make the difference between someone hanging on and sticking it out. So getting into the following habit, but not neglecting your classes -- a balance of the two is very good as you start out!

I hope that is helpful -- you can learn more about "ranking" :

Hi Mike,
Radziah again. Need help:
Since I i m in love with WA, its is a good idea that I promote WA.

I need a website to be able to promote WA?

I am not looking for shortcut, but please give me the fastest sequence I should follow, to enable to promote WA, instead of going through ALL OVER THE TUTORIALS.

I hope I made myself clear. Thanks mike. Regards, Radziah.
Reply
IslandMike Premium
Hey there Radziah -- the tutorials really are the best way they are shorter than going in 20 directions looking for all the material spread out all over either here at WA or out on the internet.

And the turotials are geared to how it is done here with the tools and hosting at WA -- much less confusing that going and reading a "wordpress guide" that is more complicated when you host on another site.

Another thought is that promoting WA is pretty competitive -- many many folks choose to do that. Nothing wrong, and you can make some money but if you had something more personal that you are interested in that might work better for you.

But jumping to the decision of developing a website is not critical at this point, and many folks can take weeks to decide -- why not make a site with the built in siterubix and get your feet wet -- that way you don't have to go out and get a domain name right away and everything you need is right here.

Do the tutorial and build it with the built in siterubix and see how you feel about it in a week or two.

Choose any subject you have an interest in and would want to share with other people.

If you have your heart set on picking a niche first -- then study how to do that -- at the top in the search box type in niche and follow the training.

To do a website, about the only thing you need not provided here is a domain, and sometimes people like to buy themes to improve on the wordpress software (that is what is used here to write the content on the website), and some people will buy some add on plug ins.

But you can do that later -- the built themes provided will get you up and going, and what few plug ins they will talk about are already in the system or easy to get for no cost.

There is plenty of time to then go get your own domain, and you can point the domain to the server here -- pull the website you have made on siterubix to that (it's still here on WA server).

That would get you to learning, applying the lessons and give you something to work on.

Does that sound good to you?

I hope that is helpful to you!

Waikiki is very different from where we live -- but I have been there and know of what you speak. It would be sort of comparing a metropolis to a countryside (Waikiki Oahu to our South Kona Big Island area).

I maintain some sites for friends (real estate, travel, some others) and we have one ourselves for the coffee farm, a different one for actually buying coffee, an old personal site, and three others for three different vacation rentals.

Had some others in the past that have come and gone as we were just experimenting or businesses were sold. These were built and in service from before I got here with WA.

I have not done any niche sites yet from studying at WA, I do have a test site that I play with some. I am going to school here so when something does ring my interest hard enough I can dig in. So far nothing has sparked me to want to dig into it. I have two projects I can do and have lots of material collected but they are more "these will work sites" than "I'd love to do that" sites.

We learned SEO and some of the other stuff from trial and error and just reading on the internet and had a few friends that were in that industry who gave some hints, and I could rank the various (non vacation rental) sites high -- had many customers in a rather competitive market.

Definitely I have learned many more things here I was not aware of -- as I go along.
So I'll probably spruce up some things as far as keywords, meta titles with some of the old sites at some point. But we pretty much had it nailed already. But I also had/have some mistakes in place.

I'm more here to get a point to do something new -- that's where WA shines, it helps you develop new markets. Our old markets were not really developed from scratch, the businesses existed and the websites came after, it was physical then internet. The websites were a support to the existing business, or in the case of coffee, the website was the way the coffee was actually finally moved to the customer.

With any new website -- does take time for a site to be indexed when it is brand new -- I can remember that well from the old days when we'd first start up a site.

That is one disadvantage of starting totally from scratch -- but it is better than not starting at all! So basically there is "lead time" when you start out in just about any internet marketing endeavor just because new sites don't usually rank well at first. And also new sites generally don't have much going for them, most folks build them out as they go so it can take 2-3 months to be mature enough to keep a visitor's attention.

And can depend on your type of business. For example, vacation rentals, you can put up a glorious site but even if it did rank well, most people book 2-3 months from arrival so there is a built in lead time in that industry of 2-3 months.

For an industry like vacation rentals, unless you are in some obscure geographic location, so many people competing -- you do your websites but might as well expect to have to advertise in the national listing services -- you will not rank above them for the most popular key words. We hit a few but not the really top keywords -- so many thousands of people with listings!

But the marketing they teach here opens up much potential, if I ever get something that presses my buttons.

Best in 2014

Hi Mike, yes Waikiki beach is deffenitely different, the 7/11 boulevard i called it, but hey i've been there and visited the perl Harbor memorial. Nice to read your internet history, it tells me that you r a trial and error builder, i think many off us are like that.
and yes finding your passion can be a struggle, if looking for one.
it seems to me that you are on a low at this moment and trying to find what your future business can be, well one off them you could do is article writing. on the subject Real estate you know a lott i guess. there is a lot of money to be made with article writing.

I say that because off the fact that your reply is an extended one, i like to read it but if you compaire it with others, you know we are in the Tweet culture. Short answers ! for me that's oke if given some good information. so i sence a talented writer.

but i agree that finding a niche i something of a struggle, so much stuff to promote out there and so many competitors, JAAXY can help they have a free guide when you sign up on how to find your niche, they even give some "hot"keywords to use.

just some ideas to (if you want) get ypu going.

i defenittely agree that WA gives you hands on study material, following the Tasks is a structural thing to do and it really works.

in my case i started with the keywords Honest Affiliate Programs and found out that i have almost no competition, keyword qualty index is excellent and my visitors each month can go up to 49. Not much but it is growing by the day so i am very happy i found a good niche in where i can bulid my business.
i think the most important thing is to just do what it is you like to do, and what makes you feel good whatever that is. Simple as that.

when you find something let me know for now i would like to wish you all the best for 2014.

Fred

Ha ha about the "7/11 boulevard" -- yes they are indeed very dominant over here. They are smart -- if a space comes open they rent it or buy it rather than let any competition come in -- so in many places there can be 3 in a block!

I already subscribe to jaaxy -- and have several folders of niches that would work, and will one day develop but there is nothing so far that has hit my soft spot and stuck when examined to see if it would really be worth the time and effort. You can be successful in about any niche is probably true -- but do you want 400 a year or 40000?
And some of the issue is I have limited time, we still have the other duties to do, so I'd like to do something that would be best efficient use (leverage my time).

Heya Mike - woah, that's dedication alright! Do you guys export your coffee to New Zealand? I had the same bad taste in my mouth re: the MLM stuff and it was a god send that I made it here. The stuff I've learned! I've just started writing content for my authority website, fun but time consuming lol. To a prosperous new year for all of us :)
Reply
IslandMike Premium
I don't recall anyone from New Zealand ever ordering -- but maybe I've forgotten, lots of people from Canada, Australia, a handful from Germany, England. When I went to look at the database (its an online system) I found I could not search by country! So can't confirm that.

The MLM thing -- the two sets of people who did the presentations (referred us) both were pretty visible in the community, one a realtor and the other owned a fitness center -- and over here it is not a big metropolis, you do someone bad and it can get around fast -- and you would think they would be worried about their reputations.

The one that was our direct sponsor -- when I discovered only the elite 3% ever made money he quit along with us, the other one is still doing it -- so turns out my logic of people having concern about reputation I was somewhat wrong -- not everyone cares so much. I just can't promote something that I know likely the other person I'm referring to will invest in and lose, especially when it is people that the person really really need a lift up (aren't trying to speculate or gamble) and the MLM is such a waste of time as well as the money they use for "products" or "training".

Unfortunately since any business takes time, you can get pretty far into an MLM with time invested and the related forms/software and products before you figure it out. I think a lot of the business model is exactly that -- the sales are to the new recruits loading up thinking they will make good.

I was glad we did not really get in so far as to have people sign up and fail. But it sure cost us a lot of time and energy -- we did health fairs and all sorts of things!

Yes it all seems to take time -- it did when we did brick and mortar and it did with the coffee, and so I'm not too surprised when I read the stories on here that most people start getting some results in about 3 months, then it builds. You just have to keep on adding your content and promoting -- I think just pretend the people are coming (keep working hard but don't worry about low numbers of visitors) and they will!

I hope things improve for you but when you are relying on the weather things are out of your hands aren't they? Anyway, thanks again and good luck.

Hi Mike and thanks for the follow. Experience is the best teacher, you obviously had your fair share of it ;-) I would not have been where I am today, had it not been for the "lessons of so called failure" on the way. But I can also call them "Stepping stones" on my way to success, because I am here - and whatever the outcome will be, I am much more successful here than in any MLM outfit, because I am the master of my own destiny here. My life today is on one of the 7108 islands of what comprises The Philippines. Not everything is to my liking all the time, but for sure - "after rain follows always the sun"! Looking forward to follow your success here ;-)

Experience -- I feel like I have been to permanent college -- essentially many hard earned degrees. Much of it was voluntary then one thing led to another.

We only dabbled in MLM -- there seems to be a few at the top that make money at the expense of the other 97% under them, so I would not approach that again -- too unfair to the 97%. It is a dog eat dog world.

Hope to keep up with you!

Hi Mike, thanks for following me :) Coffee farming, wow. And doing organic coffee on top of that. That is really, really awesome! I know you've come to the right place to get an online business going successfully. Have you chosen a niche yet? I think an informative page about organic coffee farming would be ideal!
Reply
IslandMike Premium
We've done that -- not sure I'd want to make it a niche, because basically we were only promoting one product (our own). But I suppose I could rethink that -- and if we ever did the coffee again turn off the monetizing things (per niche)..
Reply
Michelle12 Premium
Mike, there is so much more! You can promote coffee trade books, books and DVDs on the coffee industry and history. My brother in law loves home brewed coffee, so we bought him a DVD on the coffee history for christmas a couple of years ago.

Then there is the cafe set, those people who love to visit coffee houses, to try new coffee blends and be part time coffee experts.

And don't forget coffee machine and paraphrenalia reviews. Make it an 'all things coffee' website. You want to sell your own coffee of course, but thing much bigger than that. You also want to get money from all the other things you can promote. And since you do grow the coffee, you have excellent inside knowledge.

Articles on - how is coffee grown? What is the life cycle of the coffee harvest? How is coffee roasted - is there a way I could have a go at roasting my own at home? How to make the perfect cup of coffee? What about experimenting at home to make a unique 'house blend' for when visitors come over? An article on coffee jargon so you can look like an expert.

Compare the lastest whizz bang, high end coffee machine with the cheapo one at Wal-mart. Which would you recommend (hint: does it really have to be the most expensive?)

I could go on. I'm a coffee drinker and I love learning about this stuff.

Island Mike I really enjoyed reading your profile. What you have accomplished is amazing. I guess even in paradise you still have moments of gray skies. I am also living check to check and we have just added a new baby girl to our growing family. I came to WA to find a way to provide for my family and give them a slice of paradise. I believe we have found the place to do just that and I wish you the very best of luck here and with your farm.

I think it takes some digging into what the successful people have done and avoiding some of the mines they found and stepped on, then going forward with a lot of effort, then sticking to it long enough to let it work. It's not quite as easy or for everyone as depicted by some -- but also on the bright side -- some will come out the other end making their living! Hope we are part of that group! Best (and Happy Holidays!)..

Hi Mike thanks for the advice , Im a newbie , was and I say was computer illiterate but in 6 days I have built a website, I was a sceptic having been burnt by previously ridiculous claims of earnings, I like your raw honesty , in this we are brothers, reading your profile, you are old school and your family are stayers, tough and resilient, when you have learnt the concepts and how to apply them, the farm will become your hobby , not WA, see you soon, regards Mo.

Well yes, at the time we moved to the farm it had been a viable concept for at least 20 years of recent history. It was supposed to support itself and us. So now, we might stay as it is peaceful and pretty or we might leave -- that at least should be an option. The interesting thing about IM is that you are not so confined to a geographic location. We looked all over the mainland before coming over here -- but this was the best fit at the time. With IM you would not need to be looking for a land location that would work for a business and gives you many more options! Thanks for coming over and commenting!

Hello IslandMike,
what a Story, and we all have one, don't we?
Your ears had to be burning today, while I was making my coffee, was telling my daughter about you and your life. I do like a good cup of coffee and most you buy here is not digestable to me. My philippine daughter in law has brought me some that I enjoy and it agrees with me: Trung NGUYEN , exported from Vietnam.
There are several now that have come to market.
Who knows, perhaps you will find a niche as a Consultant to Coffee growers, Stores like Starbucks etc, Hotels and more.
This reminds me of my friend who ran an Italien Restaurant and a big attraction was his antiquated copper/brass cappuchino machine. Always had to summon a specialist from out of town to work on that monster, lol.

I have tried several internet marketing sites and lost money, because it just was not for me.Then others just have taken me for a ride. As we go through disappointments and making mistakes, we DO learn and each failure brings us closer to success and yes, neither one of us are spring chickens but still I am not giving up. I enjoy this community and feel comfortable among like minded people, who not only care about themselves but show an interest in You and Your accomplishments.
As long as you have access to internet, your 'lost paradise' is the place to be. That is one place I would love to visit some day.
I visited the philippines and enjoyed being cut off from my usual world. It does the sole a lot of good to live among people who are so genuine.
Our world is changing faster and faster and we always need to find new ways to adapt and be greatful.
Napoleon Hill's Book: Think and Grow Rich is an inspiring read. He reminds us to always think positive to develop a 'money consciousness' .
Emotions like: desire, faith, love, sex, enthusiasm, romance and hope are the major positive emotions.
While fear, jealousy, hatred, revenge, greed, superstition and anger are negative emotions and can not occupy the mind at the same time. One or the other must dominate and it is our responsibility to make sure that the positive emotions influence our mind. With that said, I wish you and all our WA success in our goals for the future and a better lifestyle that we all deserve.I have not seen a better place to learn and experience growth than in WA. Glad to be here and to have met you, Mike, I look forward to following you.

What you give your emotions to becomes reality. We change our world by our response to it, so we can in effect "tune" the channels and what frequency we share out, we co-create: change our encoding that writes a mark on each moment, as it were: as the "A Message of Hope" video that you linked to in your post reminds us.

Collective consciousness for peace rather than complacency... Meditate to bring down personal walls and infinitely domino those changes outwardly to multiple connected threads into infinity..

The City of Mirador where there are 40,000 year old stones somehow put into precise positions that none of our biggest cranes could even lift today!

Thanks for taking the time to write the thoughtful comment and sharing the link!

I try to do my bit here, in this internet marketing world there is so much to need to know -- I know a few parts that I can share some about. I'm putting some of the pieces together as I go.

Helping is just part of the package -- recently we were/are in vacation rentals so always giving help in email, when people would call or then when people are actually showed up here to vacation -- what to do, where to go, how to save money, is this place safe, do I need to bring my dress shoes, where do I see the whales?

As coffee farmers -- people always wanting to know how to get their perceived best cup of coffee, what makes our stuff so good, and we got them the freshest possible right to their door step, then they would order over and over, they would send us thank you cards, and definitely complain when we don't have enough coffee for their fix!

Before that we first ran other people's stores -- but like they were our own -- and then we did have our own retail stores for what seems like centuries -- and thru all those incarnations we had many sets of employees, many thousands of customers.

We did lots of "help" that way, employees can be sort of like family, you get married to them in a sense -- worry about them, hurt when they leave, sometimes it felt like divorce.

Some customers were around a lot, others you would see them so frequently -- they shared their happy events and wished you holiday biddings and let you know about their not so happy times just like good friends would.

Customers want things, they ask, you provide it for 1, turns out 20 others want it also, and they come back with their family and their friends, tell their friends, and they come back and others follow -- it is exponential. The old wash rinse, repeat they talk about here -- it is basically the same.

I certainly would not mind a trickle of that Gold you talk about. Or silver, diamond cuts, some magic fairy dust?

The treasure map is not really hidden -- it is right here. You got to pick it up, read it, maybe decrypt a few messages, then faithfully follow..

Reply
IslandMike Premium
Yes I think internet is where it is at for many of us. I have chosen a few niches and then explored them, some are not looking so good. I have a list I work on. Eventually something will fall in place that interests me and also will look like it would be viable and worth doing. I am not really stuck there at the niche picking part -- I am working on many other parts and will eventually "put it together" once I get more things on each division pulled together. I am also helping someone else -- their niche seems wide open and viable -- and whether it is my niche or someone else's I still learn how it works so eventually can apply it to my own work. I don't have to do my own work first -- just however it flows.

Thank you for following.

t seems odd that you have more demand than you can create product. Many have the exact opposite. I think the solution could be to raise your price and sell perhaps a premium coffee or find a way to increase production or both.

If your product is all organic and made and grown in the USA think you could do very well indeed.
Reply
IslandMike Premium
haha -- may be odd but true. If you can control the weather, then you would have a viable solution to the problem. We did enjoy success in this industry and I've had success in other industries before that. But as one door closes another opens as they say.. Hopefully on the internet you can change doors more easily!

I'm looking forward to getting to know you and watch you succeed in whatever niche you choose.

Well, I am for some reason by nature not very interested in change. But then sometimes you have no choice. Being pushed into looking for alternative ways to make a living I've ended up here. Hopefully part of my nature can be satisfied -- being able to stick here and not have to look further as far as a community of support. The other part -- the making money part, we have done brick and mortar businesses, did well, yet they all changed, then we did the farm which we thought would be very safe, and the weather changed. Good thing about being internet related is you can be much quicker and flexible to adapt to the changes you never could anticipate -- and it does not cost much to pull up and start a new site! When I was a kid we used to watch Elvis Presley, then later on Gilligan's Island, and later on Hawaii Five O. Never imagined I'd be way over here! It is nothing like the movies -- I thought everyone would be living in a grass hut and that everything would be lush and tropical. When we first landed it looked like we were landing on a big piece of coal (lava rock). It is very different -- but at the same time as the years go by (I've been coming since 1982) it gets more the same as the US -- a shame in a way, but that's life -- many things getting to be so similar everywhere!

Both are hard work -- but both "businesses" take getting up and getting out into the world and doing it, then repeating "it" over and over. Both don't guarantee instant results (but they do come we learned and believe in this case here as well). Also both can take 8-10 hour days at times (anyone tells you they do internet marketing in 2-3 hours a day you should really check their credentials).
Changing gears is perhaps the hardest part. We did some of this internet stuff with the coffee -- just there was no choice of niche or having the luxury of being able to look ahead at keywords -- they were all set in stone as we had the business in place. This here opens up worlds of choices and also frees you from being confined to a physical location for 10 months out of the year. (We were lucky if we could leave for a couple of days for most of the year, then otherwise we had one brief 2 month period where we could leave if we prepared ahead of time.) -- Currently the weather patterns are still evolving (look at the recent mess in the Phillippines!) all over and not sure of any schedules. -- Thanks for the kind note! I think you are going to stick and do well!

Saw your story and hope one day can visit Hawaii. Your country is picture as honeymooner dream with nice beaches and the dances. Certainly living in any country has the good and bad. However pray that you will be blessed with good weather and enjoy the nature and beaches. I live in city always envy areas with beaches. But I learnt that count your blessings and at least you have a roof whereby now the Philippines people affected by Typhoon didn't get that.

Indeed -- there is always someone much worse off and usually some one much better off! We just happened upon a bit of odd fate here for the weather to turn. However, looking on the brighter side -- that releases me from the prior commitment to the farm and makes me look at other opportunities. I'd looked at internet marketing as a sole endeavor before but could not really devote time to that and also do the brick and mortar -- so now I have a bit more time. A twist of fate but maybe it will be a good twist. You try to look for the silver lining of disappointments! Thank you so much for coming over, reading, and adding your words!

Howdy,Mike You and I are a lot alike. I know how hard it is to build a business from scratch. I have been a different kind of farmer but a farmer all the same. The weather , the insects that attack, pruning, fertilizing, planting and hoping for the best but planning for the worst. The way things grow in Hawaii, I'm sure the weeds were a constant chore and a big pain in the butt. I assume you had a few employees, and I'm sure it was fun holding their hand. I know nothing about coffee farming but I do know it can't be easy.

I have been to Hawaii as a tourist and for a tourist it is paradise but hey don't have to try and earn a living there. It must be real hard to have a demand for your product but not enough product to sell. Seems to me you did a lot in 7 years there but your 60 years old. What did you do before you grew coffee trees? I'm 63 and I'm in a similar boat, but I lost everything with no retirement. I cant blame anyone not even the weather, only myself for poor planning. Oh well, life goes on.

I'm getting to old for physical work and nobody seems to want to hire an older fellow. I have for many years wanted a home base business that I could take with me where ever I might go. I'm tired of the mountains ( but love them dearly) and tired of the cold. We do have a secret we keep to ourselfs here in Colorado Springs. It's not as cold as one might think and we don't get much snow here either. Pikes Peak actually protects our city and winter average mean tempeture is in the 50's. I'ts not unusual to have days in December reach over 70 degrees. I have even sold Christmas Trees while wearing shorts. January is cold but come February and we can be in the 70s again for a few days at a time.

I'm ready to move to the beach. My dream for now. I know exactly where I would like to be. On the panhandle of Flordia is a place called Indian Pass. Google it if you want. I's a quite place with few people. Looking for a job there long distance but it's not working out. So I'm willing to work here to make my dream come true realizing it wont come overnight.

Damn, there's a lot to learn. I decided I should start a website about what I know best and found my niche (hope it works) Growing Organic Medical Marijuana. As more and more states legalize it I think I'll do better. Looking to the future.

Say, if Hawaii ever goes legal, I'll be glad to come to Hawaii and help you convert your farm (orchard) to a legal grow. If you can ever come to Colorado my wife and I would be happy to have you and your significant other stay with us. we have a spare bedroom. Even your dogs are welcome.

I hope you can find a niche that can be profitable. The coffee market is huge, maybe to huge but maybe some way you can find a way to profit from your knowledge.

I'm afraid I'm talking too much. Sometimes I just get carried away.

Good luck to you Mike. I"ll be watching you! LOL Tom

Know what you mean about getting old. We thought we would me more mechanized but it is still for us doing it by walking and mowing -- no big farm tractors for the weeds. Actually Hawaii has been known for doing marijuana -- some 30-40 years ago lots of folks made their money and fortunes and it was not the underdogs or the bad elements as folks would like you to believe it was the upper crust and the well positioned folks (some now in positions of power in government and even in the police force) -- money is money. Eventually the rules spread from the mainland and now not so open. But it took time for the "riot attitude" to get established and most people just switched to other things (made their money and switched to other ways to make money). Not so much controversy these days -- people just keep it low profile I think and many do their own thing rather than try to be operators so to speak. Yes I think internet marketing would do well in your niche -- I see you already got a number of websites reserved! Just getting people info to do their own thing -- surely you can affiliate nursery or other products and with all your knowledge you should have lots of followers.. I'll keep up with you!

Hey Mike, thanks for your supportive message. I must say it is a strangely comforting place here at WA. I used to joke about online communities - thinking there was never really any substance to them....WA is proving me wrong in spades.

All the best on the farm Mike - Whatever will be.

That's the one, as much to myself as anyone else Mike. I was very, no extremely attached to what I thought was a little property empire. One day it was all gone, I figured I may as well be dead. People said it may be just what you need etc. It took a while, though they were right.

In many ways this does not compare to your situation, & I certainly don't wish to make lite of it. Though as a tiny dot on the planet, well, sometimes what else is there to do, but hum.......Whatever will be....

WOW Mike, I just read your profile. You are an inspiration! Perhaps you are having a tough time due to climate change and uncertainty but I can glean from your post that you are a man who goes after what he wants. That in itself is more than I can say for many people that I know in the city!
I truly admire what you do and now I am thinking that I need to get some of your special coffee! Paradise begins in the mind- I envy you for also living in one.:-) At the same time- as you well know, our belief system can create a paradise or living hell depending upon our paradigms. I believe that you have what it takes to succeed here and anywhere for that matter. I will be sending good vibes your way and it will bring me joy to watch you succeed!

Way back I used to watch Magnum PI (loved the eccentric wealthy estate owner). I have not been able to "get into" his more recent material (perhaps because of his political stances) -- but plenty of folks over here do. We may be in the sticks but we get all the same high definition channels everyone else does (plus we have a ROKU hooked up and we have Amazon Prime) so there is really just too much to look at as far as televised entertainment.

Hello Island Mike, and thank you for stopping by my profile and leaving you nice comments. In my humble opinion, there is no better place to start an Internet Marketing career as WA is a very unique business community. I have been a member about 18 months.

You will learn so much... It doesn't come easy, but it does come. You may be very surprised to discover you are surrounded by a huge community of support when and as you need it... just ask. There are also two very active founders, Kyle & Carson, who are here daily, sharing their vision experience and guidance. (1st 7 days, then daily with premium membership)

There is no place like this...that gives you so many tools, great classrooms, interesting discussions, Great leadership and all the interaction you want from fellow members and so much more you'll discover… might even make a couple of new friends along the way.

The difficulty becomes staying focused while surrounded and excited by so any possibilities... so many learning tools all around you.... For many it is overwhelming. I suggest focusing on one task, one step at a time. I know it's hard to do as we are all compelled to explore everything immediately… there is so much available here. It is
not a race, after all you will be creating your own business from start to finish... how exciting is that! If you need help or guidance at any time, do not hesitate to ask or check out our live chat where you will find members that can answer many of your questions right there on the spot.

Hi Mike. Boy can I relate to your story! I raised my family on the Big Island and like you tried my hand at growing coffee in Kealakekua. I can honestly say it was the hardest work I have ever done. Of course, it was well over forty years ago and the market was better than it seems today. Never mind the fact that I was in my late twenties rather than my current late sixties. My hat is off to you my friend. Mahalo for sharing your story. I look forward to getting to know you.

Kealakekua is just a short drive from us, we are up the mountain on a narrow coffee land road a bit further south. This has always been one of my favorite areas of the Island although I enjoy other areas when we get to go see them. Actually going to Hilo tomorrow and hope to have one of the best shaved ice you can get at Wilsons on the Bay -- I bet they were there 40 years ago!

Hello Pete. Never actually heard of this particular outfit -- but then there are quite a few that come and go and we are usually pretty absorbed in our own little world with so much to take care of we don't often look to see what others are doing. Frankly, we never particularly wanted to be too terribly big and make so much product we would need to outsource it -- the point of coming over here was to be Hawaiian -- enjoy and lay back part of the time (but of course I guess you can be enterprising and still be Hawaiian) -- but anyway we just wanted to do enough to be comfortable -- and our business model did not require affiliating as everything we could grow we could sell directly. Also, we could do sales and specials within our own customer base with email marketing to the list, etc. A few people have asked in the past about selling our product, we just never pursued, and of course these days we are low on stock. But that part of your website is clear and pretty and I hope it does well for you! Interesting you would pick coffee on a sports related site -- I would think you'd be promoting gloves, bats, uniforms, energy drinks... We have a customer in Honolulu that does pool cues -- that's definitely sports related -- maybe you two should connect? Let me know perhaps he would outsource or affiliate to you.
Reply
pderr1234 Premium
I AM promoting bats, gloves, etc...that's the Sports Store. The coffee is in the Articles section. I have a sports AND family site, so there are non-sports related items. I figured drinking coffee and reading my articles go hand in hand. I don't believe in energy drinks. Most are caffeine and sugar and addictive. (I should talk huh....with all the coffee I drink) I haven't done a pool page yet, but I may in the future. If he wants to contribute to my site, I am open to it. Take care and best wishes.....Pete

Yes I've been to your site and I like the way you coordinated the top title color and home button and the side frame color. It all works well. Then you use nice graphics that are not too big not too small and clear to draw the eye down -- into the articles. And lots of appropriate white space so the eye can also rest and not seem overwhelmed by too much continuous text -- you break it up in good portions. I also like the fact that you present options not only at the top in the standard menu but have a side menu, several side menu boxes actually that help also encourage the reader to pause and stay a while. There is not much I could criticise and I'm pretty picky so I'd say GOOD SHOW! Just listen to what you guests say -- sometimes what the design books say and what the guests would prefer may be in conflict -- I say give the guests what they want over the so called rules (and weren't rules made to be broken?)...

Hi Mike, you sound like an interesting character and I thought I'd better follow you. Paradise is only Paradise if you have the time and wherewithall to enjoy it. Focus on the good things that abound in your life and you will attract more (likewise if you focus on the weed whacking, there will be more of that too). Here's to your success at WA, Mike.
Reply
IslandMike Premium
I've tried to ignore the weeds -- it does not work. I think there is such a thing as having just too many areas of responsibility -- we used to have a friend who said "you get what your intentions are focused on" and I said "I am not unintended, I am just over intended." Once you have many things there is a graceful way and not so graceful way to get out. The graceful way can take more time, but does less harm. Some call it leveraging -- do what yields the best returns, but you have to watch out by what means you get the ends. Paradise is definitely still around -- but then it is not really exclusive to Hawaii -- it just made for an interesting lead in line. I've always been the type that if there was an obstruction and I could not remove it, I just decorated it and made like it was on purpose and went on with getting things done!
Reply

Thanks for your comments on my site too, Mike - yes, definitely heard of Wayne Dyer. One of his quotes was 'Your intention is your reality' - basically what your friend said.I did not mean that you shoud ignore the weeds - What I meant was, "Where the attention goes, the energy flows." Basically what it means is, just focus on the good stuff, acknowlege it, appreciate it and be grateful ..... and more will come your way. Good idea to decorate obstructions, just that some people won't stand still long enough ;o)

There is a separate shopping cart on its own domain which is self contained we did last year. We have some others sites for other things that we are involved in as sort of partners (we know how to do the websites and behind the scenes connecting clients to agents, etc.). But those two above we started the businesses from scratch so to speak, grew them. Long stories.

I had a cousin come over three years ago I think it was for about three weeks, and then she came back the first of this year with hubby in toe this time and they were here two months. It is really a joy to show "new" people around and share -- they soon get Hawaii in the blood. Still to this day, when we talk on the phone I can say something very briefly and they remember the exact spot, or the food, or the people. They crave what can only be had here and around.

Living off the land can be tough. There are so many conditions you cannot control. Does the government have any subsidies available for farmers? I know they do in my area.
Best of luck with WA. Keep in touch
Reply

There is a lot of grants but if you check into them many are geared to those who have pretty deep pockets -- say you want to put in a solar system that might cost $100K you need to be able to fund it and then wait for the money -- so you do the planning, do the project, then you have to be inspected, then you wait for the money. First if you do all the work how do you clone yourself to do the grants stuff and also your regular workload? So not exactly for normal people -- it benefits the more affluent and companies that already have money than the grass roots that could use a boost, and it is geared more toward those enterprises that have employees who can afford for them to take the time to do all the processes and applications and research. But yes there is a lot of money out there for some people.

rightnow99 Premium
Apples are grown around here and it was not a good season. Not a grant but the government will reimburse farmers for expenses (of course no profit) but they do get something.
IDEA: Can you capitalize on the PARADISE part? Maybe a bed n breakfast or coffee plantation tours and/or coffee tasting. Sounds like you're in an ideal location not too far from the beach and tourists have $$$$ and always looking for something different.

Well we actually just shut the shopping cart access as far as buying down (had to keep some for the customers that paid ahead with club memberships) -- we have to get some more by picking and drying and all that fun stuff, then we can release it back for sale again. We actually already have websites for coffee and vacation rentals and some other things, but they are not monetized like they teach here -- I'll get to that (in my spare time haha after the picking processing, weed whacking, and studying and just life in general). The seasons are running so late now -- we have just started and in the good old days we'd be about done with the picking and processing!

Bill Gates used to own property on this island -- it was massive and most always just sitting empty. We could see it when we ate at one of our favorite restaurants in town -- and you'd also go past it if you took some of the ocean tours (like the glass bottom boat). A friend of ours, his dad used to caretake it and he told us... I forget now exactly -- but it was something in the range of $50K just to trim the coconut trees, and that was several times a year (if you don't trim your coconut trees they tend to drop down on those unfortunate folks walking right below!). Oh well I imagine 50K and an empty multimillion dollar estate was just a tick of the tock for someone with so much wealth. Still, always seemed to me to be a waste to let it just sit empty all those years.

No I never got involved with Empower Network -- although I attended some on-line webinars from a guy who liked to say he was sponsored by Aliens and he used empower as a part of his custom network. MLM in this case was the old type where you talk to everyone you meet, direct them to websites or give them out brochures, you have physical products and also sell memberships so to speak. I was totally thrown off because some of the sponsors were very visible and I did not think anyone would risk their reputation promoting something that did not deliver. But turns out some people have the capacity to call signing up people when they know you will fail is "just business".

Nice weather. Have three beautiful dogs we were just handed. We have a flock of peacocks that often come to get their feed and honk and fly up on the roof in the morning. Built up a coffee farm and we could sell all the coffee we had to customers all over the world -- but the weather patterns these last few years have been knocking us for a loop. But yes, we took the plunge of moving from a fairly successful niche on the Mainland to Hawaii, and about the time we got set up here the economy tanked. We still would have been okay had it not been for the weird change in weather. That's why I approached it as stranded in paradise. It is very ideal in many ways over here but you still need cash flow. Had we not tried we would have regretted not having come over and tried. And actually we did make it -- it just did not remain stable.

Back 30-40 years ago there were quite a few people who did surf all day. These days to live here you need to have a bona fide place to stay and that costs more money -- there are building codes and things like the police who will not allow you to just camp out. And as the population has grown, the land space is less available -- we are basically a big rock not so big when compared to the mainland US so only so much of a pie to cut up. That makes the pie pieces more valuable -- so real estate is expensive and that sets the foundation for costs (if land is expensive then a landlord has to charge more for rent). But yes we have a steady flow of new people who come over and you can see the dream in their eyes. When we have relatives come over it is really fun to introduce them to all the various landscapes and different experiences. What is most fun is to get them used to one area for a day or two then pull the rug out and switch to a different area. Then when they think they have Hawaii all figured out -- change again. After about two or three weeks of that (there is a LOT to do over here) -- they think there could be nothing left to top what they have already seen. We always have final night or final day surprises to send them off! Yep I have studied and have scores of books and audio downloads, have attended seminars, have applied the law of attraction. After all I am here aren't I ? (smile)...

Hi Mike! I'm honored that you have chosen to follow me here at WA. I'm not sure if this is a place to create wealth, but it sure is the place and learn and grow. And perhaps that's all it needs to be. Have great success! Lee

Just a comfortable income stream would be fine. If I had wanted just money I could have stayed safe and comfortable (if not also barracaded and locked in for safety) on the "Mainland" US. Definitely if you're going to spend time and effort trying to figure out how to do business on the internet -- you might as well do it here at WA, lots of motivation, a system designed to make us friends -- and major stores of knowledge and learning tools all rolled into one GIANT cigar!

Aloha, Mike. I enjoyed reading your intro. I relate to what you say about mother nature. We are having bush fires all around Sydney today, and I have never seen the sun look so bright orange against black smoke-filled clouds. It was eerie. But as you have done, we must count our blessings. Glad you are with us at WA and I look forward to seeing you around. ~ Jude

We flew back and forth to Hawaii for many years and the weather seemed so consistent. But the last several years it has really changed, up where we are sometimes we get a couple of hours of good sunshine then clouds and often rain. At least all we need are a couple of hours to recharge the solar water! Our seasons seem to be pushing forward a couple of months, we are confused and so are the trees!

Hi Mike. I was in Kona a couple of years ago. I just loved it on the BIg Island. I am a Canadian but my dream is to eventually end up in Hawaii at-least for part of the year. Of course in the sunny parts. That's a big reason why I am at WA.

Just take your time - maybe use a unique selling point for your coffee business and website and I am sure things will work out for you. Kona coffee has a great reputation!

Thanks for the follow. It's much appreciated :)

Lot's of Canadians come to Hawaii this time of year into March (all year actually but MANY more during this time). We did vacation rentals for about 5 years (I still do some of the behind the scenes work to help out even tho don't own the place) -- and every year lots of people flow from the colder to the warmer climates! We live a bit south of what is considered "Kona" which is actually Kailua (Kona is a district) -- we are in South Kona right in the middle of the coffee belt.

I know I probably should have been doing my homework -- but I did not have unlimited time during my trial period -- and I mostly went around reading blogs and following links to websites. I really like the fact that there are many regular folks on here. That's why I chose to follow you. You may not be a computer genius but you've already got a web page up in short time. I hope to learn from and then at some point maybe help out when I know more. Thanks for the nice response to my follow!

Well, I have not yet done all the initial 1-2-3's but I will. I got distracted during my trial stage (and did not have every day to come to Wealth Affiliate) by all the stories and unfolding lives that are revealed on here. It is nice to know people come and grow and often stick around to try to help! Perhaps getting to understand the great community here is about as important as doing the classes, maybe I just did it a bit backwards? Thanks much for the response!

I liked the fact that you have gotten a couple of websites up in just a pretty short period of time -- you seem like someone worthy of following. Who would have thought you could get paid to play video games? Anyway you seem to be applying what you have learned here and that interests me, and hope to continue to be inspired! Thanks for your reply.

I couldn't have put up two websites in 2 months if it wasn't for the AWESOME training that Kyle provides. Plus the help that's available from the other members who have been here for a long time. Once I got the first website up, the second one went quicker. I'm hoping my next website will be just as quick...once I decide on what the niche is.
