Sadly, Say Bye-Bye to WP Clone by Academy

While trying to help another person out with moving their website from one host to another today, I went to retrieve the URL for this once awesome plugin only to find it now seems to be deserted by the developer.

It is now labeled with a WARNING: "This plugin hasn't been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress."

Knowing that a lot of us have this plugin installed on our websites, and that we’ve grown to depend on it for backing up our sites and restoring them if need be, thought I should let the membership know of this issue.

If anyone can recommend a fully tested replacement plugin that works as efficiently as this one did, I would certainly appreciate knowing of it.

The All In One WP Migration plugin is great plugin for larger websites, but by far not as convenient as this plugin was for automatically changing a domain name and all internal links. Here is a guide for the All In One WP Migration plugin: https://help.servmask.com/knowledgebase/all-in-one-wp-migrat... for anyone wishing to use this one.

Trish what is the importance of feedback on site because in the past I have had only newbies that have given feedback. So I don't ask for feedback. I usually ask for feedback privately from members that are in the same niche as myself My site health is just about 100% except for feedback that is at just 60% .
always a better way
Linda

Personally Linda, I would not worry about feedback considering your site looks as awesome as it does.

Remember too, the website scores are there to assist people here who know absolutely nothing about building a website. Focus your attention on creating unique, quality... in demand content and your site will be a winner every time.

Best feedback ever thanks Trish

Well, Trish, this sure puts a damper on my happy use of WP Clone. It has been working like a champ - so far!

I also noticed the WP Clone changelog hasn't been updated since 28 Jan., 2017!

Previously, I was using BackWPup but, I started getting a message: "Response body too large." - when I tried to download the zip file to my desktop. That's why I switched to WP Clone - due to a recommendation by Marion (MarionBlack): Now, I'm not sure what I'll do for a free, but functional, backup plugin!

Jim

Well Jim, the All In One WP Migration does work wonders and I have had to restore a website with it.

The only thing I'm not happy with is that we have to make adjustments to any links IF we use the All In One WP Migration plugin to move a website from one domain to another.

WP Clone by Academy worked like a GEM for moving sites from one domain to another as it automatically updated ALL internal links to the new domain.

Maybe... just maybe now that my post is out here and made public... maybe the developer will update it... maybe. Hey... we can always pray that happens, right?

I'll give it a try, Trish. Right now, I'm trying to do a backup with Updraft Plus - as suggested by Marion - but, it's taking forever and a day!

Jim

All In One WP Migration can take a long time too... if you have a large website.

However, if WP Clone by Academy was backing up your website previously, then darn... sounds like something MAJOR had to happen to the code... major enough that would make it feasible for the developer to walk away from this WP Clone plugin. :-(

Between this news and Wordpress 5.0 all I can say is, "Ruh Roh"

Good thing we have WA and people here like you and Marion Black to keep our websites from breaking!

Glad to help out where/when I can Hal, Thanks!

I don't use the tools the same as you. I just backup my site from time to time, as I did before upgrading to WP 5.0, but check out UpdraftPlus. It offers some migration options in the features list.

It's a highly rated backup plugin.

Thank YOU Scott... I remember NOW reading about that one... one of the other plugins I've worked with mentions using UpdraftPlus and I had forgotten it. Thank YOU!

Don’t mention it.

Yikes! I just installed and activated this this week. Thanks for the info.:)

Hey Suzi,

I know exactly how you felt reading this... just like I did when I saw that warning. Several of the websites I tend to have been using this plugin... especially just before updating to WordPress v5 ... lucky us, huh.

No kidding. I haven't had a chance to update to 5.0 yet, but I'm glad I'm finding out these things before:)

Thnx, T
M

You are very welcome Michelle.

Trish,
Thanks for sharing - good information that others need :)
Susan

Thank you Susan!

Thank you for sharing Trish.

You're very welcome Maxine.

OMG...lite I just finished using this to back up my site. It worked perfectly...but you are suggesting we won't be able to do a restore. Darn.
Debbie

Hey Debbie,

This was NOT meant to create panic... and, I too backed up SEVERAL sites with WP Clone before updating to WordPress v5. We all got lucky... this time.

This plugin MIGHT work for another few upgrades yet, but I wanted to make all users aware of this issue, so not to be kept out in the cold if/when it no longer works.

So if I did a successful backup using this will it be able to get restored if need be. Are you saying that we should use something else for future backups. Thanks...this is all so confusing to me...on top of upgrading to 5.0. Ugh! Thanks, Trish

I am letting the members of the community know that there is a warning posted on the WP Clone by Academy's plugin page that was put there by WordPress.

Warnings are put there for good reason. If you prefer to continue using this plugin, by all means, you can.

However, when I see a warning that WordPress puts on a plugin's page like this, I know NOT to depend on the plugin actually continuing to work.

We COULD get lucky and have the developer return and update this plugin, but somehow, I don't think they will as they would have done so by now if that was their intention. Especially when so many of their users (me included!) would have depended (and I did!) on their plugin through the version 5 update that WordPress released yesterday.

OK...I get it now...thanks for the clarification.

thanks for the heads up .
Jerry

You're welcome Jerry!
