Now we are set up, we have started following some related people, we need to get ourselves out there more.

Let's look at the different types of posts. There are 7 in total, that is a lot of variety!

Type 1: TEXT

A text post is like a normal blog post on your site, you can add a title, tags, as much body as you want, insert images and links, the works. You can also add a "content source" link if you have taken some of the content from elsewhere (free link to your site perhaps?)

Type 2: Photo

Photo posts can contain captions too, as well as content source and tags like with a text post.

Type 3: Quote

This is a handy little option, giving you the ability to quote somebody and site the source. Tumblr is good for its ability to cite sources and promote sharing.

Type 4: Link

I love this feature, you can put a link in, give it a title and a description. It isn't much use as a back-link, as tumblr doesn't get much love from google, but it is GREAT for traffic building.

Type 5: Chat

This is perhaps the least used type of post, it is basically a normal text post but allows you to have a dialogue posted. It is not a "chat" function like you might expect, more for reported speech.

Type 6: Audio

A cool feature if you like to link pre-recorded audio from yourself or others, again you can cite the source.

Type 7: Video

Similar to audio, this allows for further variety. Videos are great for providing information as many people are a little lazy when it comes to reading. You can link from youtube/vimeo or any other embed tag from any site.

Step one: Create your first 'text' post.

I recommend a short text post as your first one, a little "about me" or "what I do" type post.

Remember to add tags and links to your site where relevant!

Step two: Create your first 'link' post back to your website.

Links = Traffic. Traffic = Win.

Step three: Choose one of the 7 post types and make one more post.

As you can see by now, Tumblr has a wide array of functions, and is a blog all in itself. That said, it doesn't have to be a lot of work. It can be used similarly to Twitter if you want, but it doesn't have the limitation of character restrictions. Simplicity + Flexibility = Tumblr.

My teenage daughter is one of Tumblr''s biggest disciple. She likes it much more than Facebook.

The more I use it the more useful and enjoyable I find it to be, facebook is great for keeping in touch with friends (or trying to) but tumblr is a much better way of seeing and learning new things, as well as potentially making new friends!

This is a great idea! I've stayed away from tumblr myself because it looked very overwhelming, but I do believe I'll set up an account this evening. Thanks for sharing this!
