Now that you've got your basic page and account set up, it is time to customize it!

Tumblr offers an array of different themes and a lot of them can be customized further.

Before you can begin with any customization, you will need to verify your account, if you haven't already done so, find the e-mail they sent you at the sign-up page and click the link to verify your account.

Note: If you've lost the e-mail, they will prompt you to have it re-sent when you try to update your profile.

Step One: Choose a theme

From your dashboard, click on your avatar and you will be taken to your blog page, it will be blank at this point save for your avatar in the top right and "Untitled" in the top left. Looks pretty boring at this stage doesn't it? Well , let's do something about that.

Click the "Customize" button in the top right. You will be taken to this page:

From here you can begin to give life to your blog. At the very top of the left-hand pane, is the "Themes" button. This is where we start.

There are a number of themes available, the one you choose isn't permanant so don't spend too long, find one you like and click "use".

Note: When you click on a theme the preview screen on the right will change to represent how your blog would look under this theme. As you can see, they fill the preview with pre-made content to help you have a proper "preview" of a blog with content.

Step Two: Choose your title.

Underneath the theme section is the Title section. Type the title that you want your blog to have, this will be the title for your entire blog, not just a given post, you can add them manually when you do a post.

Step Three: Further customize by changing your background and appearance.

The "Appearance" tab is the next one down from "Title". Different themes allow for different levels of customization. Some of them allow a change in background color, a chat name, borders, footer links/borders, link hovers, Facebook/Twitter buttons, some only allow a change in name; you might want to go back to change your theme if you are not happy with the level of customization available, or you might want to just skip this stage.

Step Four: Add an "About me" Page

Below the "Appearance" Tab (you might need to scroll down) is the "Pages" tab. Let's click 'Add new' and be taken to the following window:

Add 'About' (or whatever you prefer) to the end of the Page URL, then add your title (in this case, 'About me') and if you want, check the 'Show a link to this page' box. Finally, fill in the body section with your about blurb.

If you want to create an additional FAQ or other page, you can do it following the same method, for now, let's learn more about using Tumblr!

Important: Remember to click the SAVE button at the top of the page after you are done!

My teenage daughter is one of Tumblr''s biggest disciple. She likes it much more than Facebook.

The more I use it the more useful and enjoyable I find it to be, facebook is great for keeping in touch with friends (or trying to) but tumblr is a much better way of seeing and learning new things, as well as potentially making new friends!

This is a great idea! I've stayed away from tumblr myself because it looked very overwhelming, but I do believe I'll set up an account this evening. Thanks for sharing this!
