Tumblr seems to be one of the least used Social Media outlets among WA members, yet it has some great aspects about it that can provide a boost to traffic, branding, and all aspects of social marketing.

In a nutshell it is a blogging platform aimed at putting the ease back into blogging, you can create posts in a variety of formats in a number of seconds. People often use it in a similar way to Twitter, but with more detail and care in the posts it can help build one's authority and traffic. That said, it can take time to set up at the beginning, which is why I have created this guide.

Tumblr.com is second only to Facebook in terms of time that users spend on the site. That is pretty powerful. It also has a number of different posting options (7 in total) that allow flexibility, creativity, and downright fun. We will go more into those later, for now, let's walk you through getting your account set up.

Step One: Go to http://www.tumblr.com and click the "sign-up" button in the top right.

You will be greeted with the following screen. Enter your e-mail, password, and username.

The username you choose will form part of your tumblr address, so choose carefully. In this case, my tumblr page is http://itseasytostop.tumblr.com

Note: You can change your username at any time, so it is not vital to get it right the first time, but is something to consider.

Step Two: Choose some interests and follow some blogs.

After you have chosen your username and gone through the anti-spam verification code process, you will be greeted with a page telling you to choose your interests. Feel free to choose anything interesting to you, and of course choose anything relevant to your niche. There wasn't a "Health" section when I signed up, so I chose fitness, sport, and other related themes. (My tumblr page is currently for my quit smoking website)

Tumblr will then recommend some blogs for you to follow based on your selections, don't worry too much about this, follow around 3 to begin with, this is just the set-up stage, networking comes later.

Next up is the "Follow People You Know" section, allowing you to sync Facebook and Gmail to your blog. It is up to you if you want to do this, or you can just skip it.

Step Three: Upload an "Avatar"

Tumblr likes to refer to its profile photos as Avatars. It is very straight forward to change your avatar, just click the +pick avatar button (not the actual silhouette of a person, the text below it) in the top left of your welcome screen. You don't have to choose a photo of yourself of course, it can be a thumbnail or your website, a logo, anything that you wish.

Now that you have your account set up and a photo uploaded, you are ready to move on.

My teenage daughter is one of Tumblr''s biggest disciple. She likes it much more than Facebook.

The more I use it the more useful and enjoyable I find it to be, facebook is great for keeping in touch with friends (or trying to) but tumblr is a much better way of seeing and learning new things, as well as potentially making new friends!

This is a great idea! I've stayed away from tumblr myself because it looked very overwhelming, but I do believe I'll set up an account this evening. Thanks for sharing this!
