In this video you’re going to learn how to add Adsense ads to an individual post or page.

As usual, there’s a plugin for that. I use Ad Inserter.

So install the plugin, activate it and let’s go.

Make sure to click on Save All Settings every time you make changes or it’s not going to work.

Please don’t have too many ads or your website is going to look spammy. A short post should have one or no ads and a long post may have more.

I followed Marion's walk thru but was unable to find the html code to paste into Block 1. Anyway, I downloaded Ad Inserter and it is not performing as expected. It should have removed all of the ads with my settings in both screenshots (tick boxes). I removed the Adsense code from my header file in my theme as well. A few hours later, I'm now seeing a neat Ad Inserter drop down menu at the top of my webpage to control the ads - which I wasn't expecting - new feature? - but they're not working either. Any Ideas?

Did you use auto ads instead of creating your own ad? Remove the code for the auto ad then go back to AdSense and create one that will blend in with your website. You'll find that ad inserter will work better for you then.

Hi Marion,

Yes, they’re auto ads, and some compete with my review/recommendation, others are complementary gadgets which is good, if only they were fewer in number. So, I was first trying to remove all of them as a test.

Here’s the code I removed from my header file (it was manually inserted, not by plugin):

[removed][removed]
[removed]
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({
google_ad_client: "ca-pub-8637367815430329",
enable_page_level_ads: true
});
[removed]

But maybe it needs another day to clear my website. The code was removed hours ago today. The ads are still there now.

Next, I’ll need to learn how to create my own ad in AdSense.

Thanks,
John

Go to Websites > Site Manager and turn off site speed to clear the cache then turn it back on again.

If that doesn't work contact site support and ask them to clear the cache.

I turned off and back on SiteSpeed. It didn't change anything right away. Then I also checked that I still have the Insert Headers and Footers plugin activated. I deactivated it (even though it hadn't added any code to my theme), and the ads are all gone immediately!

Thanks for your help, Marion.

Next - using Adsense to hand pick my ad(s)!

I wouldn't use Adsense on my money-making pages. Keep them just on the posts that provide information without affiliate links.

Yes, that makes complete sense. I have 3 purely informational articles that would be perfect for Google's ads (I made 60 cents - I've clicked some of these ads myself to see what they were about - hope they're not getting confused!) I did just check the Google Adsense Forum and didn't see any good direction on hand picking my ads, at least not within about 5 minutes after making a search. I'll flip the switch on the handy drop down menu feature in Ad Inserter v2.40 and see what I get with their automatic selections for now :)

OH NO! Don't ever click on your own ads as Adsense sees that as fraud.

Whoops, that's too easy to do when testing out your own website - clicking the ads that Google is placing on my site - to see where they're sending my readers. You would think they'd use something to identify us such as IP Address.

I'm having no luck getting Adsense to work just on my informational articles that have no affiliate links. It's ads everywhere or nowhere. I think I don't have the correct code patch that will give me control - the one I showed above. Yours from the video looked quite different. I'll just keep all the ads turned off for now until I can figure this out.

Auto ads will place ads all over the place. When you create your own ad units you control where they go. Also, remember that the ads you see will be different to what someone else sees as Google tracks people's interests and serves them ads accordingly.

Yes, I noticed I was also seeing some *geographically-specific* ads that won't work outside of my town - Myrtle Beach.

Ok - ad units! That's the ticket - thanks for the pointer/path!

Have a good day in Oz. I'm signing off for the night. Thanks for all your time, much appreciated!

Text & Display ads give you the best control.

Marion,

I've been away for a while, but I'm back. Today I created my own "ad units", selected the "Text & Display" format and with the Ad Inserter plugin placed the ads exactly where I wanted them - at the bottom of my informational posts, and none on my main page that already contained my affiliate links. The new ads showed up in about 1-2 minutes. The entire session took only about 10 minutes.

Thanks,
John

I just went through the exact same thing with my site. I didn't have the code in the header/footer plugin either. It was in my header. I just had to do the same. Thanks for the tip!

There's so many different ways to add a feature to your website, with some implementation differences. This wastes time :) I was able to document what I went through :) Glad this (and Marion) helped!

Thank you! I was about to tear my hair out trying to figure this out. I've been waiting for a week and hadn't heard anything back from Google. I was starting to worry until you mentioned it can take 3 weeks to get the ok from them.

Thanks again! You're a lifesaver!

Yes, they say just a few days but it can take weeks before you hear back from them.

Marion, I put my code in the Ad Inserter "header" tap. I found it by accident. I was following your training to the letter, looking at you video, pausing it, while going to my website and doing very thing to the letter. In the Ad Inserter console there is a round button at the end of the blocks. I clicked on it there. Is that a proper place for the header code too? Just curious if I've done the right thing. Thanks.

Hello Marion,

Thank you for the informative video.
I have a question. Is it possible to control what kind of ads appear on a website?
Also, I noticed that there is an option called 'Automatically smarter ads'. Have you tried that as well?
Another thing - is it mandatory to create new AD Unit for different posts or it is OK to use a single one?
Either way, I receive this error when putting in-article ad unit for one of posts (it works for another one, though) %MINIFYHTML9bf9056a1dab8d038d4c1bf91b0524759%
%MINIFYHTML9bf9056a1dab8d038d4c1bf91b05247510%
Do you have any idea?

Google controls the ads which appear on the website. They automatically take into consideration the browsing history, interests and location of the viewer as well as the content on your website, and serve ads that they "think" the viewer will click on. You can control whether or not to allow gambling and adult content but that's about the limit of your control. Trust them, they know what they're doing.

Is "Automatically smarter ads" something new? I haven't come across that yet.

I use different ads for different websites so I can see which site is working for me. But there's no reason why you couldn't use the same code for more than one site. There's no need to create different ad units for different posts as the same code can be used everywhere.

Sorry, I can't help with the error codes you're seeing. Perhaps it's got something to do with a plugin you've got installed.

Thank you! I figured out that the error is gone when I don't use the plugin but I put directly the script in the post (text editor).Strange behavior...

I just saw 'Automatically smarter ads' too. I wonder if we can use Ad Inserter plugin with this new ads.

HI Marion! Great video, thanks so much. My account was disapproved because it says I didn't have enough content. Most of my posts are around 300 words. When I submitted it at first I hadn't set things up like how you just showed us. Do you think that makes a difference? Should I resubmit now that I have set it up as per your video?
Thanks a bunch

The first step with Google Adsense is to get yourself or your company approved by Adsense. The second step is to place an ad in the sidebar widget area. Then you need to wait for Adsense to approve your website. It's only after your website has been approved that you should start putting ads within the posts.

If you feel that you now have sufficient content to make them happy you'll want to reapply.

Maybe I am way off the thread, but I thought different niches required particular lengths of articles?

Here's a little quote from a post on my website:
"An article should be as long as it takes to explain the subject fully without fluff. I like to say that a post should be like a miniskirt; short enough to be interesting and long enough to cover the important parts."

and
"Targeting a particular number of words is a waste of everyone’s time. Your time in writing the article and your reader’s time when they are reading it. If they don’t find the information they want quickly their eyes seem to glaze over and they skim through the rest of the article. Or just leave. Your job is to give them the information they want in such a way that they enjoy reading the article."

Another little gem to add to my Marion treasure trove. However there is a conflict about length of posts which I find confusing.

The way I resolve conflicts like this is to look at the actual posts that appear at the top of the search results. Are they all the same number of words? If not, does the actual number of words really matter? Or is the quality of the words more important?

Hi Marion, this doesn't work on my site. I did add the Easy ads plugin, inserted the code in the box, checked all the boxes you said. placed the short code and waited. Got a mail from Google Adsense, Your request has been disapproved for the following reasons. Property rights of the domain: To complete the AdSense approval process, you must link your site to AdSense.

After that, I used the Header and Footer Scripts, placed the script in there, and the script into a widget. Then I received an email from Adsense, your site is approved. And the adsense ad is now appearing in the sidebar.

Until now I kept both plugins, and I don't know whether I can delete the Easy ads plugin safely because I don't want Adsense anywhere else than in the sidebar, I don't need the shortcode inserter anyway.

I don't know which script Adsense detected, or doesn't this matter? If you know what I mean

It sounds like you've got it sorted now. You don't need the Ad Inserter Plugin and now you've got the ads appearing in the sidebar you don't need the code in your header area anymore.
