Please Note: The File Manager part of WA Hosting has gone. I haven't had the time to update this training yet - you can follow these steps still but you'll need to use an FTP application such as FileZilla. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Creating the Child Theme

To create our Child Theme we will need to access our website via FTP. There is a fully fledged FTP tutorial here although the basics are below. We'll use the WA File Manager since it's the easiest way to add a new file. You can use FileZilla or another FTP application if you want, although you will need to create the files outside and drop it in. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just use the WA File Manager. You will only need to use it once.

Go to Build Websites in the WA Sidebar.

Press Login under the Control Panel column for your website.

This will open the Plesk panel. Sign in with your details. If you don't know your details, hover over View back on the Build Websites page.

Click File Manager.

Your website files are displayed. Click on each folder (listed just below) in order to navigate to where your themes are kept.

httpdocs >>wp-content >>themes

This is what my theme folder contains:

In it are all the folders for the different themes that you have installed.

Take note of what your theme's folder is. I'm using the twentyten theme so the twentyten folder is where my theme is kept. If you're using another theme, take note of what that folder is called. Don't open it up.

Make a new Folder

We need to make a new folder for our child theme.

Click Add New Directory.

The next screen will request you give your new folder a name. To make it simple, type in the name of your theme with a "-child" on the end. So for example my folder would be twentyten-child.

Press OK. The new folder will open.

Now we can almost start!

Yes, although it gets a bit tricky. I'm not sure why you'd want to, the comments section on blogs is usually sufficient for user interaction. This plugin may help: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mingle-forum/

Wordpress is definitely a wonderful platform...it is not perfect, but it is has come a long way and it sure beats the old days of building websites from scratch!!

Yeah, I tried Wordpress even just three years ago and hated it. Now I couldn't imagine using anything else! And it gets better on a very regular basis.

firstborn - you could not put adsense codes into breaststrokeforbegginers.wordpress.com because you were using the free wordpress version (yoursite.wordpress.com). If you owned your site it would be yoursite.com. You can't monetize a free wordpress, or blogger etc. You have to 'own' your site to be able to do that.

Well written tutorial, Mark! Do you know if you do your site customization on the parent theme, do you lose all that when the theme owner makes updates? Is this why you would want a child theme?

Thanks again for doing this tutorial.

Yes, this is one of the reasons why child themes are good - you do lose any changes made if the theme you're using is updated.
