"You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems."

That quote is from James Clear's book, Atomic Habits in which he talks about how creating systems is much better than setting goals.

Goals point you in a direction but creating a system is how you get there.

Here's my question for you--do you have systems in your business?

In particular, do you have a system you follow for creating content--a system to follow for creating each blog post, podcast episode, or video--from concept to execution?

Maybe you call it a workflow or process or checklist.

What you want is a customized step-by-step that guarantees you complete all the actions you need to follow to get the most bang for your buck with each piece of content you create.

Everyone's system will look a little different. And that's because you and your business are unique.

If you don't have a system for your content creation, then chances are you're not able to publish your content consistently.

Or you've been missing some steps along the way here and there. And that means your content isn't working as hard as it could be to showcase you and your talents.

A system (workflow/checklist) for publishing a blog post could be as simple as this:

  • Decide on an idea--a topic
  • Research--key words, quotes, articles to cite. This may be a significant amount of work in this step or it could be minimal depending on your niche and topic.
  • Outline
  • Write
  • Edit
  • Create visuals--featured image, social media, etc
  • Publish
  • Share
  • Repurpose

There are likely multiple steps within each of those major steps.

In addition, everything needs to be scheduled in your calendar to make sure they don't get derailed by a distraction.

Creating a system has been top of mind for me recently. That's because I have decided to launch a big product which I will sell for at least $500.00

I've been creating a system to make sure I've got a new zoom lesson every week on product creation.

Systems are the way to go to make sure you don't miss something. And to make a repeatable process more efficient so you do get the best bang for your buck value.

Start noticing and documenting the steps you go through to create your content. It will be as unique as you are.

And once you've got it down the way you want it and you go through that process repeatedly--you're laying down a habit.

And keep in mind this Jim Rohn quote, "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going."

Keep going.

And create your systems.

I'm game for applying this word to a website transformation, a signature course, and other business assets that go through transformations/rebranding, etc.

2 Quotes for the week:

"Things do not happen. Things are made to happen." ~ John F. Kennedy

"We do not remember days, we remember moments." ~Cesare Pavese

3 Content Prompts:

Looking for some content ideas for emails or blog/podcast/video posts? Try journaling or riffing starting with any of these prompts.

Use the second quote above ("We do not remember days, we remember moments.") to write about a moment you vividly remember. Why does that memory stand out for you? Bonus points for connecting it with your audience as a lesson for them.

What's one new thing you learned this week? Maybe it was from an online free webinar you attended, a passage in a book, podcast episode you listened to--what's the new thing--big or small that you absorbed this past week?

• Write about one of your mentors. What did you love about being mentored by this person, Why did you want a mentor and how did you find one?

I do have systems of sorts--which are a little flexible, as needed--for creating content, in place, Catherine! This is a compelling post!

As long as you have a system

2

Thanks, Catherine! I am constantly tweaking it as time allows.

2

Absolutely they are never set in stone

2

They have to roll with the changes, just like everything else, Catherine!

Thanks for sharing this information post, Catherine!

Good question and message...caused me to stop and think. Yes, I haven't thought about it, but I do have a definite system for getting my posts researched and written. Have never written it down, but it's there and it works.

My DayTimer is part of my system, because I make a list of all the projects that need done that day, and the DayTimer helps me stay on track. It's rewarding to check something off that list.

I know where you are coming from Fran

Goals and systems are useful strategies. I am not good with setting up a system, I must have done them without thinking about it. Interesting, I never read this book. I will look up that author.

3

Interesting you did it anyway

3

I love having systems! Gee, I'd better make more. And that James Clear book is about halfway down my to-read pile. I think I will move it to the top.

4

I love systems and I love James Clear

I didn't recognize it as you stated but I've recently made this a priority.
It helps to focus my swings.
Just setting goals without a game plan is just swinging in the dark.
I really enjoyed the quotes and using them as a jump off. Thank you for your insights!

I am so glad you found them helpful Stephen. My old mentor and friend drummed into me how vital systems are

5

I have a couple of mentors that tried for months before it finally sank in.
Hard head syndrome...

4

Well, in my experience Stephen, you only hear something when you are ready to hear it. Before that, it goes over your head. I am including myself in that

4

Sounds like a great reason to grow...so things stop going over my head!!
Thank you Miss Catherine!!

Great Post. I am going to write a post on Why I had a copy of Ken Wilber's "GRACE and GRIT" sent to my 57 year old daughter.

Will be reading more of your articles today.

4

Well if we resonate I must go and buy that book

4

Excellent article Catherine!! Creating those habits has really helped scale my business!!

6

That is awesome Suzie

Hi…I agree, goals for me tend to be more longterm, but much like a To Do list in nature, my system consists of steps/ benchmarks and checklists. This is what works best for me.

Thank you for sharing…great information!
