Brave pills, take as needed
I am a horse trainer. Although, I'm 100% sure that my horse trains me to do his bidding just as much as I train him. I've had him since he was 6 months old and I swear he can read my mind some days. At this point, I know every inch of his very substantial frame like the back of my hand and he still screams with delight every time he sees me coming to get him. Every. SIngle. Time.
That's not him in the picture, by the way. My horse is way more of a derp and I could not love him more for it.
Almost three years ago, I came off of him and broke my ribs in the fall. If you've never had broken ribs, they're quite possibly the most painful part of your body to bruise or break. You really have no idea how vital those things are in literally every thing your body does.
Sure, falls are part of my sport. I readily climb on 1500 lbs of nothing but muscle (well, maybe he's a little more pork chop currently, but come on, it's winter and he lives outside and yes, it does, in fact, get cold in California) and generally hope for the best each and every time. Did I mention that 1500 lbs has his own opinion on how each ride should go? Because he does. So coming off of him put a big ol' mental block in my head that I haven't been able to break through for almost three years now.
There are other issues that make this more complicated that I won't bore you with and I promise there's a point to this, so stick with me, people.
I've kept chipping away at my fear, little by little, taking it one day at a time with him. If he's extra cheeky one day, I don't get on. If I'm feeling particularly human and very fragile, we have an easy day. On days when I know I can stick it out through whatever argument he throws at me, we do more. Those are the days I take my brave pills. Sometimes extra brave pills are needed becasuse my horse is incredibly athletic and doesn't mind showing me. But on those days, with extra brave pills on board, when I can stop thinking about everything that could go wrong and start celebrating what's going right, it goes well. It goes really well. It reminds me why I do what I do.
Today was a brave day. It was an awesome day for both of us. He got extra bananas at the end, after an extra long trail ride after our workout and he was super proud of himself. I was super proud of him, but also me too. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy and get stuck thinking too much about what can go wrong. Start celebrating what's going right and notice your confidence build. Your rank went up overnight? Awesome. You got through more training? Amazing. Keep it going. You finally thought of a killer niche and you can't wait to get through more training and get your website setup? YES. We are all here for it and for you. Share your wins, no matter how tiny they are, because a win is a win is a win. Keep going and keep winning at life and watch everything fall into place for you!

Hi, Donna.
Paul Mindra here from Southern Ontario, Canada.
Very nice post.
"If I'm feeling particularly human and very fragile, we have an easy day."
Other days, we all need our brave pills. I know what broken ribs and dislocated limbs feel like. I've never been thrown by a horse, I got my playing contact sports.
Listen,
This is what I think...
"If you are not living on the edge, then you are taking up too much space."
Thank you for posting.
Paul.
Thank you, Donna. It's interesting to me how many people are able to draw life lessons out of their own personal experiences. I find it inspiring.
Same with this. Yes, we may fall and fear may take over, ( to a point) but, Cudos to you for getting back up and, slow as it may be, conquering your fears.
This WE MUST do in order to move forward in anything. We must take our "Brave Pills" and hop back on.
We Can Do It.
Wayne
Very true words, Donna--celebrate even the little things and watch your motivation continue to build with each time! Great post!π
Hi Donna
What a great post and analogy for life and business. Itβs important to share the wins and enjoy the energy and motivation they bring.
I know what you mean about the broken ribs. I broke my collarbone a few years and for such a dopey wee bone, it really incapacitated me for weeks
Thanks
Dave

Hi Donna, you are a good storyteller. I was hanging on to see which way it was going.
I think dog brain is very much like horse brain. They live in the moment, unless someone seriously mistreated them. Then they have the trust issue. Horse is a lot bigger and they can have a truly funky sense of humor.
In Hawaii, we had pig hunting dogs, all very intelligent, and somewhat hive-minded, as they were used to working together, in the life or death matter of hunting a pig. One shake of a boar's head and a dog's throat can be mortally cut through every thing that's vital.
Horse is supremely aware of your posture, your voice, how you approach them, and plenty things we rush passed, they "get". They are kind of like universe in LOA, Law of Attraction. What you put out, the universe, says, Oh Donna likes that, I will give her more!
Dog sees you as part of their pack, and if you are Alpha loving, they seek to please. Horse, not so much.
Hey Donna, maybe I should use this as a spring board and add to it as a first post. What do you think?
Suzay
I think you've got a great start to your first post! I've worked with all kinds of animals and every single one is more in tune with their surroundings on a daily basis than most people will be in their lifetime.
I had an old cowboy tell me years ago that "with dogs, it matters who you are. With horses, it matters what you do." It's very much the difference between the predator and prey mentality. Once you're in the pack, you're in. Those dogs know they can trust their pack members in pursuit of a common goal (by the way, hog dogs are badass. Hogs are NO JOKE.) With prey animals, it's slightly different. They can read a situation and a person in seconds flat, because that's survival. Different motivations, but still similar.
Thanks for reading!
