Ranting...Not Me This Time

A few days ago, my daughter commandeered my tablet because her laptop is messed up. The hinge is not letting her open it when it is closed and not letting her close it while it is open. So now she uses it as a "desktop" here at home, but she still needs something for her classes (remember when all they needed was a pencil and some paper?), so she's been using the tablet at school.

Anyway, few days ago I was thinking of the up-coming Halloween festivities (how can you miss them, right?). and thought it might be cool to show you all this cemetery that's just a stone's throw away (about a mile and a half) from our house. Since my daughter has been using the tablet, which is the only camera available for us, AND she walks past the cemetery everyday to and from school, I asked her to take some photos for me. Turns out she couldn't get good photos from the tablet, but since her boyfriend has a camera on/in(?) his cell phone, he took the photos. Thanks Noe (her b-friend)!

The cemetery has been around since the 1800s, when this town and the surrounding areas were established by a handful of settlers. If you are a fan of the old western movies and can remember how a lot of the old desert scene cemeteries look, you'll probably think this is one of them.

It used to be great fun growing up during Halloween, to make a trip through the cemetery. The first time I took my daughters through, they were somewhat impressed with the timelines on the tombstones. So that is what I asked my kid to take photos of. When she asked if I'd put them up yet and I said "No", well that's when the ranting started. In my defense though, she's been keeping me busy herself, what with having to get ready for her job next week. And food! Always wants FOOD! >; )

OK! NOW THE RANTING WILL COME FROM ME! I can't get the images to load onto the page! I'll keep working at it!

Got this one by "drag and drop". Sorry that it's too big. It's not the oldest date, but the gentleman was buried with his horse, so it's the most interesting of the bunch. Since it is the only one that is so large, it is the one that vandals go after. It's been knocked over many times by punks. I'll try to get the others sized correctly for you all.

Hello Terry. Maybe I can help. Where are the images stored? Are they still on the cell phone? Were the pictures transferred to the tablet? In either case, you will want to transfer the pictures onto to the laptop (aka desktop now) and upload the pictures from there. Its possible that if you are uploading the pictures from the tablet or cell phone, that your site might not be optimized for mobile and that could be why you are having these problems with the pictures. Hope this helps, and if you have any question, I´ll be here to answer it.

Thank you. I was just talking to my daughter about it. The boyfriend "sent" the photos to my daughter's laptop and she in turn downloaded them to a USB drive and I used that to load them onto my computer. I stored them in one of my picture files, but I noticed that they are stored as .jpg files. I asked my kid, and now I'll ask you, if I change them to a .jpeg file instead, will I have less of a hassle? Thank you for the offer of assistance, you may have just saved the internet world from my wrath! >; )

Hmm if this keeps persisting, PM me.

Roger that Cap'n. It might be because of going from cell phone format to Windows 8.1 format to (eventually) my lowly Windows 7 Ultimate via flash drive. They were loaded to my files as .jpg and I could drag n drop the above image, but not crop it. My daughter showed me how and where to crop them, but due to the size of the above photo, I don't think that the smaller ones will fit, so I'll probably wait till tomorrow for some of the rest. Can you stand the suspense? If I still have troubles, I will definitely take my aggravations out on you. I'll think of a reason why later. >; )

Sounds good lol.

Hi Terry. There is no difference between .jpeg and .jpg. They are the same format, just created by a different program, like in the case of the cell phone. Your computer will store them differently from the cell phone that they were taken on, but they are the same and can be edited as well.
One of the best programs to so some simple cropping and editing is also free. Go to the picture that you want to crop and right click the picture. Scroll down to "Open with" and hover your pointer over it. A list of programs will pop up and scroll over to "Microsoft Office Picture Manager". You will be able to do basic cropping and editing with this program.

Thanks for that. But my main issue was with this WA page. When I tried to add an image to my post (above), I selected the browse button to got to my picture files. When I select an image to upload, it loads 5 really small pics of the same image in a vertical row. When I try to crop (as it DEMANDS) it wont. This was why I thought maybe the format of the images was wrong. I dragged and dropped the photo above and was elated that it actually worked, so I left it! I now know where to crop my pics within my computer, but your suggestion sound like it will be easier. Thank you! I'll go check ASAP.

You can download irfanview, great little photo editor, & it's free... I use it all the time...

I don't think it matters what I use. I have the images on my computer, I have reformatted them, I've just spent HOURS trying to drag & drop them (which was successful on my end - but disappeared after I hit PUBLISH), I've tried their way, with the little camera icon AND the other one. Neither will let me crop to anything bigger than a tick's ass! It's a communist plot against redheaded women with bad tempers to just drive us CRAZY! ERGO, No follow-up images other than the ones I just posted out of spite. Feel free to print them out and attach them to a dart board. Use really big darts!
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll still check out irfanview though, just not until my blood pressure comes back down. >; )

Pictures can be sooo frustrating sometimes. I'm not sure if you already solved this, but if not maybe this will help...at least it's what I do when using the Microsoft Office Picture Manager...
1) First I'll open an image with Microsoft Picture Manager and just to make sure I don't lose my original I'll make a copy of it by going to the "File" option and choosing "save as"...when that comes up I just add a 2 or whatever to make it a bit different from the original file name.
2) Click save
3) Close the original pic and find the copy
4) After opening the copy with the MS Picture Manager you can edit it and not worry about messing up the original. (you should be able to find both copies in your files)
There's a resize option there that I find useful...Click edit picture up at the top and "resize" will show up in the options on the right menu under "change picture size" click on "resize."
5) Once you do that click the dropdown arrow on the 2nd option "predefined width x height" and you can choose different sizes there...I usually find the "web small" to work for most things
6) Click SAVE up at the top left and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps somewhat...let me know if you're still having problems or if I missed a step. Best of luck :) -Sherry

Thanks for the tip, but I did that (sort of) and the images I have are resized, on my computer. I just can't get the "crop image" here on WA's new blog INSERT IMAGE figured out. And now I can't drag/drop like I did above, either. Images will be the death of me.

If you want, I can log into your site and have a look. PM me the details if it's ok.

Howdy! I knew if I mentioned "images" again, you'd pop up. I don't know what you mean about "log into my site", but I was just thanking freedomseekr for the tip, I'm not dwelling on the images today >;p but I am wondering, if I looked into some type of desktop publisher do you think that it might help? Then I could just transfer the whole mess to the page and have done with it. I've been using just Word Pad, and was thinking about something else.

Not sure about desktop publishers. I use microsoft paint to edit images and screenshots. As for content, I just type it up on my site and publish it. If I ever need to transfer anything, I just use notepad.

Then you are far wiser than I, 'cuz that's what I use too. I type everything here on the blog page, which is fine, but it gives me a hard time with the images. Re-sized or not. I actually had an easier time with the first one that was not re-sized (above) than I do with the re-sized ones. Oh well.

I wish I knew what the issue is Terri :(

Probably just another case of Operator Malfunction. I'll see if it works if I move the images that I re-sized back to Word/Note Pad. Thanks for trying. And stop lurking about! ; )

I have to lurk about. It's part of my business here at WA :P

I Knew It! Mamma warned me! That's OK though. Helpful lurking is welcome, so carry on

Actually I get emailed each time someone comments on this thread so I come to check it out :P

I knew that. Gives me a sense of POWER! All I have to do is type in "Images" here and like a Genie from a bottle, there you are. So, for my first wish I want...a pony!

I can't wait to see them, I love old cemeteries!

And here I was looking for the photos or a link to them at the bottom! Rant On!!!!!

@#!$ %^$#* etc...

I concur!

Oh Terri, I love reading your blogs :) As for the images, when you save them, try to create a name for the image which doesn't have spaces or any other unusual characters.

For example, if I have a picture called Picture A I was editing and then saving, I would save it as "PictureA" not "Picture A". I've had issues in the past uploading pictures and this helped. Hopefully it will help you too :)

I have the pics, but when I try to add them to the page, it wont let me ('cuz it's a mean and hateful beast!). It shows me a vertical row of miniscule squares of the same image (4 or 5 of the same images) and tells me to crop. I try to crop, clicking, stretching, threatening and yelling, but the size stays the same. Then I click "Done" (even though I'm not!) and is says (with thinly veiled sarcasm, I just know it!) "You Must Choose An Image First" and then it gives off an evil chuckle while I continue cursing and clicking and plotting the destruction of ALL things internet related (Google first)! When I DID get an image to the page, it was only a portion of the image stuffed down in the right-hand lower corner! I'm just glad that the DELETE button functions as it should, or you all would think I'm crazier than I really am, with all the convoluted pics in the blog! 8'(

What a tease... where is the 'Dislike' button. ;^)
