The difference between a Niche and a Keyword

A niche is a group of people who are looking for a solution to a common problem.

To have a niche market there has to be action and area of interest

Formula

Niche = (action) + (area of interest)

If people are not looking for a solution even if they have a problem, there is no niche no matter how passionate one is in that business. In order to have a niche there has to be a gap in the market and people have to be actively looking for answers to that need.So a niche is a group of people looking for a solution to their problem. A niche is targeted and focused at the same time.

Now not to confuse a niche with a Targeted market, let us define a target market. The target market is the specific people you give services to e.g. dog owners, antique collectors and so on goes the list.Whereas a niche is the service you specialise in giving e.g. dog owners trainings, dog owners’ discussion and consultation groups, etc.

Checklist for a niche market

  1. The market should have a problem and actively looking for a solution to that problem.Even if there is a problem but the market is not looking for a solution to it, there is no niche.
  2. The market should be willing to pay for the product or service being provided to them.It does not matter even if there is a need the target market should be willing to pay the amount of money for that service or product.
  3. The market should not be saturated already.Say the niche was targeted at training mothers on weaning their babies off the breast and many people are targeting that market already it is better to find gaps in that market. The market could not have targeted working mum who wants to learn how to wean a child at their own free time.So this group could be targeted through eBooks and the niche would be Ebook for working mum who want to attend the lesson as their own leisure times.
  4. The product or service should be solving the problem it is intended to solve.Giving out free trials and getting feedback can address such problems of whether it is well targeted.
  5. It is important to track who the customers are and why they like the product.
  6. Niches change with needs. When the needs change, it is important to adapt the business to address the new need in order to stay in the market.

How to find a niche market

Finding a niche market is much easier than we think. No need to worry about the things you do not have but instead to look within yourself and list down the following:

  1. Things you have trained at school or university
  2. Things you have done in your career
  3. Business your family is running
  4. Your hobbies
  5. Things you want to train in and are passionate about learning

You can write down 5 items from each of the areas above

Make a decision

What is it from the list a priority for you? Say one of the items in your list of hobbies is gardening.

Now gardening is NOT a niche it is an action. If you are looking for a niche market in gardening, there has to be an area of interest. We can use the Alphabet soup technique to find a phrase with an action.Okay let us add that

  • gardening for beginners
  • gardening calendar for allotment owners
  • gardening for kids

Now we have the action and the areas of interest. Have we got a niche NO not yet? The reason we have not yet found a niche is because these might be too broad niches.

Now we go to our friend Jaaxy and enter these phrases to see what comes up.

When I enter phrase (gardening for beginners), it is not a niche because it is near to saturation according to Jaaxy. I want low hanging fruits, so I dig deeper.

I could not thing of a phrase to enter in Jaaxy, so I go back to Google and entering “gardening for beginners” + (a,b,c,d … )This time I find a phrase “gardening for beginners what to plant”, I plug that phrase back to Jaaxy and see my results.

The original phrase “gardening for beginners what to plant” is under searched only yields a monthly search of <10 which is not a market. But, when I look further down in the list there is a niche “gardening basics beginners “ with 139 searches a month, estimated traffic of 24, QRS of 13 and SEO power of 97. This is a low hanging fruit I would consider as my niche.

But, the phrase does not make sense without inserting FOR, so I go again to Jaaxy and enter “gardening basics for beginners” and the result is superb

Number of monthly searches is 139, traffic 24, QSR 87 and SEO of 100.Now I have found my niche market and it is

Gardening basics for beginners

Gardening basic = actions

For beginners = area of interest

So what is the difference between keyword and niche?

Now we know what a niche is let us define a keyword

A word used by a search engine in its search for relevant Web pages.Well someone has to have entered the words there for a reason for them to become keywords. We can, therefore, bring it home by using a definition that is relevant to us.A keyword is a word or phrases that people type in the search engine when looking for information. These are phrases people use to search the internet for information or services that can address their needs.

Generating keywords for niche market

So, if you want to generate keywords for your niche market, you need to know keyword phrases your market is entering in the search engine.

To find the keyword phrases let us start listing a good basket of potential keywords to drill down on

For our niche we could have:

  1. Gardening
  2. Gardening basics
  3. Gardening basics for beginners

I head off to Jaaxy to find the keywords. Now when I plug the keyword "gardening" in Jaaxy I get a long list of keywords. Down in the middle I find a good keyword "cheap gardening tools" with monthly searches of 114, estimated traffic of 20 and QRS of 95 and SEO 97 which I can consider as one of my keywords. I can use for my targeted market.

I just replicate the process until I find the number of keywords I am looking to be used for writing my articles.

That is all the process in how to find my niche market and niche keywords, so we are ready to go.

Hope that helped

Hi Tereniza, Thanks and very helpful to me.

You've done it again Terenzia, top marks!

Hi Terenzia! The algebraic equation really makes sense to me. Never really looked at this as a mathematical deducement.

Thank you so much for your detailed analysis! It really is helpful and I'm sure a lot of people appreciate your contribution!

You are a brilliant mind. Love following you. Thanks for sharing your techniques.
Pam

Very helpful for newbies Terenzia. I understand the comment below though about it not being a "problem" but very helpful info on how to find a niche.

Niche does not need to be a problem to be solved. Gardening is not really a problem. It is an interest someone has. I would rather think of a niche as an interest someone has to convey to others. Collecting beanie babies can be niche. It will not solve a problem just relate information to those who have an interest in beanie babies. I just did a video on using Jaxxy today for my website to target niches and the information you can glean from Jaxxy for keywords to use in you content. Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Very true, I too do not see Gardening as a niche just as I have said in my article.

"Collecting beanie babies" could be a niche and if we tested and found out that it is a low hanging fruit, looking at it in my way I would say "Collecting" would be the action and "Beanie Babies" the area of interest. But it does not have to be my way because there are many ways of doing things.

I would be happy to learn other ways too, I am very open

I will catch up with you later, have a nice day

Terenzia

I feel gardening can be niche. Later this year I am going to develop a website on roses. I am still working on narrowing down the niche even further. I want to share my love of growing roses with others. Will I solve a problem maybe or maybe not. People will be provided useful information.

Hi Debbie,

Gardening by itself without a target market (area of interest) cannot be a niche in online marketing context. That is the solid truth my dear. We will have to drill deeper and find the low hanging fruit. That is where our friend Jaaxy does the job for us.

But as I said, I am open to learning and changing outdated ways of online marketing.

Nice talking to you

Terenzia

This is an interesting way of coming up with a niche, I find Jaaxy is very good for narrowing down your niche once you have an idea of what you want to go for.

Very good Terenzia. Thanks again
John

Nice job Terenzia!

Will be helpful to many newbies Terenzia.
