A good night's sleep

I have been taught a set of practices that are commonly accepted in Italy as the best things to do to get a good night's sleep.

I tried all of them: a glass of warm milk with honey before sleep, a cup of chamomile, natural sounds like waves or rain, a bit of stretching, self massage of the feet, a light supper without fried food, and a few others.

Results: I still can't sleep if I'm stressed.

I also tried natural relaxants form the pharmacy. No effect whatsoever, besides my pocket a bit lighter.

Then I tried sleeping pills. Not only I didn't sleep, I became a zombie. I warmly advise you all to never take them, they are very bad.

No matter what, if I'm stressed there's no sleep for me.

Am I the only one here? I don't think so.

Therefore I'd like to pool from the WA international community resources. If you have a tip or trick that makes you sleep even if you're stressed, please write it down in the comment section, it may benefit someone else.

Hopefully, ME as well :)

Thanks, Alma

I sleep when tired, a blessing really, even if it is in the middle of the day. That is my key finding your natural rhythm. I have friends that do not so I am watching with interest Alma.

That's a blessing indeed! I wish I could do that. Thanks Alexander

I was asking a friend who is not a good sleeper she has started to take a magnesium supplement she gets from her local health food shop, her sleeping patterns have really improved.

She's right. I take magnesium every day after dinner. It really improves sleep.

I know this problem very well, so I do sympathise Alma, the only advice I can give is have you tried yoga, they say exercise before bed is a no-no but I downloaded a book on my kindle called good night yoga and I sleep really well afterwards. Hope this helps:-))
Steph

Thanks for your solidarity :) and yes, they say exercising before sleep is wrong but sometimes I do some light stretching for my back. Now you tell me that there's good night yoga which sounds quite interesting. I'll go get it and see what happens. Thanks a lot!
Alma

Your welcome Alma, the book is good night yoga by Julie Schoen Little Pearl, at the moment it is only £2.39 or you could try it for free on kindle unlimited, it is only a short book but as I say it helps me. I do hope it helps you:-))

Thanks Steph, I'll go look for it :)

I am always so tired when I eventually go to bed that I rarely have trouble sleeping. But I do try very hard not to get stressed, and to counteract it immediately if `i feel it beginning!! :)

How good it is to kill the stress as soon as you see it arriving! I'll try to do so in the future!
Thanks
Alma

I have been meditating for years Alma...it calms the mind so it is easier to go to sleep. Plus you don't need as much sleep.

Now that's a very interesting thing to know. Being able to sleep for a few hours but still getting rest is my ideal sleep. Which kind of meditation are you doing?

I've been practicing Transcendental Meditation since the 70's.

I've just looked up transcendental meditation and it sounds very interesting. Thanks Michael.

It's my pleasure Alma! I wish you all the best!

Hi Alma. I agree with Vera. Around my home, everyone is in bed before 10pm, yet I will stay up well past midnight some evenings just blogging and visiting with friends across the globe. Many are in diametrically opposite time zones. I live on the West Coast of Canada and a lot of my following live in South Asia, India, Oceana and the Middle East.
I find that talking with them online, Skype or by phone takes a lot of my quiet time, which is great, as I don't get bored. I was up last night talking to New Zealand until 1 am my time. It's now 9:30 am and I just woke up. If you are in a position to actually occupy your mind for long hours, you will sleep a lot better when you DO go down for the night. Hope this helps.
Be blessed.

Ian

Hi Ian, that's another good thing to do, spending time talking with friends even if they're far away. I live in the Middle East as well, and have friends all over the globe. The only problem with timings with other family members is that when they sleep it's the only time that there's silence at home and I can actually get a bit of peaceful sleep, otherwise is mayhem and sleep is out of question. The only solution to this problem is finding a really peaceful flat nearby where I can sleep in peace! I am already looking for it :)
All the best.
Alma

Well, Alma, I am not an expert of course , besides I might serve as a bad example because I go to bed really late( I am a distinct night type) but I can sleep long in the morning too. What I would advise is, try to exhaust yourself in the evening physically( some long walk) or intellectually( write a good article, or answer all the comments which come daily, etc.)... I mean - get really tired, not stressed. Then go to bed and sleep. And don't go to bed because everybody else does im your home. Try to find your own pattern. Go to bed at different time, sleep as long as you need...
And- don't think about your problem. You will aggrevate it if you do...
Good luck to you!
Vera

Thanks Vera, you've given a list of smart things to do, and I do them all!

The only problem with the brain is that you can control your thoughts while awake, but when you're about to fall asleep it goes its way, and that's the moment all problems present themselves once again...

I've been looking for my brain's switch button for a long while, but still didn't find it ;)

The ONLY thing you can do- think positive... You can do it. Our brain is constituted this way... you can control it. Even do this- write a list of good things which happned in your life and reread it. Our brain is rarely empty - it's a blissful state we need to learn to achieve. That's why fill it with poisitive things. Enjoy life!
Even better , if you are a believer, fill your mind with God's word. God's word is the power that holds everything in the universe- and you too...)))

Yes, I believe in God, so when I can't sleep I read and repeat His Words. Sleep arrives after a while, and that time is well spent :))

That's really what should be done... God bless you and give you good sleep! Hope you are already better...:)

God bless you too Vera :)

Try listening to a relax or sleep meditation audio just before bed. (you can get plenty on youtube).

It might also be an idea to identify what it is exactly that your stressing about and ask yourself a few questions for eg, is there anything I can do about this problem or situation right now?

I'm no expert, but sometimes getting to the bottom of a problem gives you greater clarity on how to deal with it.

Hope it helps

I'll try the meditation audio right away, thanks.

About the reasons behind my stress, you're right, getting to the bottom is the only thing that makes sense. I do know what are the problems, and I am working to solve them. God willing I'll get out of them soon!

Thanks for your suggestions Tom, much appreciated.

Alma

I usually stop drinking coffee earlier in the day, that goes a long way to help me......

Thanks Therese, that's a good thing to do.

I drink it till late at night(or early in the morning)... lol

My husband suffered from insomnia and I bought him a CD - Deep sleep every night by Glenn Harold. It worked a treat

I've never heard of this Mr Harold. I'll google him now. Thanks Pauline
