I am starting to add more affiliate links in my articles. I was wondering if the links should be marked "open in a new tab".

I have heard no, but then I have heard yes

You have FANTASTIC responses here, Tai; kindly let us know if you require additional assistance.

Hey Tai,

There's no right or wrong, this isn't a "thing".

However, I always open links in a new tab.

The only reason is that website remains open in the previous tab.

So, if someone reads the "affiliate article" in the new tab, decides they don't want to do anything more, so they close that tab, the FIRST THING they will see after closing the tab is the ORIGINAL ARTICLE on your website they were reading before clicking the link.

If you DON'T open in a new tab once they close the affiliate link article tab, this also "closes" your website article.

Basic human psychology, if I close a tab and see the original article on your website that I was reading I may be tempted to read more articles on your website.

But, if I opened in "same tab" once I close that tab I WON'T see your website, so I'll go off and look at something else.

The more time people spend on your website, the more "helpful" your website is deemed, the better you can expect your rankings to be.

Simples right? 🤣🤣🤣

Partha

Hey Partha,
Yes, simple in theory, but.............

Hey Taianne,

Thanks for asking this question because so many SEO experts have claimed that we're supposed to state that ANY link that we set to open in a new tab should be stated as such.

Personally, I have NOT been doing that as I found that a bit tough to believe.

Tonight, because you asked, I sought PROOF from Google using your exact question... but Google would not answer the question until I added "ethically" to the phrase.

LOL! Check out the screen print below for the #1 answer in my SERP.

Hope you find this helpful.

Hi Trish,
Good ole Quora, but then it doesn't really answer the query, does it?
"Should external links open in new tab for SEO?"
"There is no hard and fast rule for whether INTERNAL links should open in a new tab or the same"... lol

Yes, no hard and fast rule... which was the point of my sharing the screen print.

See?

Helping you find an answer has now reassured me that I'm doing just fine NOT warning viewers that the link will open in another tab. 😊

I think a good rule of thumb to use is for any external link, open in a new tab. For any internal link, open in the same window. Like Phil said, this allows the reader to not completely leave your site in case they want to go right back and continue reading and exploring.

Hey Eric,
Well crap. I have not been marking any of my external links as "open in a new tab".

Should I go through all my posts and change them?

Totally up to you. I don't think it's a make or break type of thing.

I don't have data to support it, but I always open in a new tab, so that the visitor doesn't lose their place in my website. They may wish to read more or even buy something else.

Thanks, Phil,
The program I was in prior to WA taught to mark affiliate links as open in a new tab.

But for some reason I got it in my head that someone here stated not to do that. So looking for clarification.

Well, as I said mine is just an opinion, for the reason stated.

My dementia has kicked in (lol), and I have forgotten how to create an image pin for the cover on my new board that I created in Pinterest. Sorry, let me rephrase. I mean, I re

I got it figured out!!

Woohoo, congrats :)

thanks

You are welcome, Tai :)

Hey Blueberry Pickle/ TAIWAN,

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just my opinion, I've NEVER created a "board cover" (and my Pinterest account seems to be doing well... yet to see ANYONE come close to my figures with the exception of Andy 🤣🤣🤣🤣)

I view Pinterest as a

VISUAL SEARCH ENGINE

NOT a social media platform.

In other words, much the same as people find articles on your website by placing "keywords" into the search bar (and hopefully your article ranks near the top), Pinterest works in EXACTLY the same way.

People search for something via the search bar and then will click on the Pin that they are most "attracted to" or that they believe ANSWERS THEIR QUERY.

So, while having a lovely Pinterest profile and Pinterest Board Covers may help in some way, to me, it's much the same as "BEAUTIFYING YOUR WEBSITE'S HOMEPAGE" (the vast majority of people who visit your website will do so via an ARTICLE and not your homepage).

In the same vein, the vast majority of people who visit your Pins will do so via a SEARCH and NOT coming to your "Pinterest Homepage Profile".

And this is why I have NEVER worried about Pinterest Board Covers and Design, etc.

Here's how well I know you Tai... you just uttered under your breath

"I didn't understand a bloody word of that"

READ IT AGAIN!!!! (and then AGAIN!!!)

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Haha, Don't know me as well as you think. There's no need to read it again; I actually understood it the first time.

And I have had 533 outbound clicks in the last 30 days.

Good Job, Fantastic, Well Done.

Keeping with viewing Pinterest as a Search Engine, and therefore "looking to gain traction", having multiple Pinterest accounts in a variety of niches, I've noticed that it takes somewhere between 5-8 months to "gain traction" on normal Pinterest accounts.

(I have used "Blackhat" methods on one Pinterest account, so that received millions of views and 1000s of daily outbound clicks within 2-3 months, but being "Blackhat" I can't really teach it to others, and with most things "Blackhat" it will work really well, earn money really well, for a few months, and probably eventually die!!!)

I would be hesitant telling people NOT to do stuff with board covers/designs - Pinterest is a search engine, and people do search based off of boards to follow. boards may not be the first thing they see, but you can search Pinterest only for them, and they do rank (screenshot 1).

So, while you may not search based off of boards, others do. Just my 2 cents worth.

(Oh, and P.S. That first board in the screenshot is from one of our Pinterest accounts - first one I actually tried look to see if we ranked for anything, LOL.

Dug around a little more, and Screenshot two we're ranking board 1 and 3 for the keyword build a capsule wardrobe).

I am very happy with the outbound clicks that I have gotten so far. It's not in the thousands, but maybe eventually, I will get there. :)

Yep, it did kinda occur to me AFTER I wrote that!!!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'll be honest and say I don't use Pinterest how "it is intended", and perhaps if I did my figures would be even better.

I guess I just see it as a "quick and easy" source of website traffic.

But yeah, I then thought about it, and I've acquired 10s of 1000s of followers, so I'm guessing many of these would return to my profile and go through boards, etc.

Plus, I'd never actually considered boards ranking, but it makes a lot of sense.

Anything with a url, regardless of what it is, has the ability to feature in organic search results unless specifically set to "no index".

So, in the same way that profiles, e.g. social media, forums, Q&A sites, web 2.0 properties, have the ability to appear in search engines (as they have their own specific url), yep, the same can be said for Pinterest boards.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I don't remember what to put in the title and description

Hi - I have never added a board cover, I just pick one of my Pins, and change it occasionally.

This is what I mean

How do you pick one of your pins?

Hmm, to me, by having a specific cover, it takes away the opportunity to perhaps click one of your best/most popular Pins on display.

*Just my opinion, it does not replace the WA training*

To pick one of your own, just hover over the board, and you will see the pencil for editing.

Click that and you will see the option to add a Board Cover.

And while you are in the editing option, have you added a description for each board?

Yes, each board has a description

*Just my opinion, it does not replace the WA training*

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Title: Use the title to briefly describe your board's theme or use the board's name. This helps with Pinterest SEO and makes your board more discoverable.

Description: Provide a more detailed explanation of what users can expect from your board. Include keywords related to the board's content to improve searchability.

Why do I have to upgrade to comment on a blog here on the platform. See screenshot in comments

Is that a PP+ webinar class are you referring to?

And if that is, you cannot comment unless you upgrade.

Hey, I just saw that, in order to reply to a question, I needed to reply!

That is an odd bug to have here.

Please get this fixed!

Rudy

see below - upgrade??? what? I'm maxed out, lol. can't upgrade any further

As I said to Tai, it's clearly a bug.

yup

Weird, just, weird! It's a bug, for sure...

Rudy

Oh lol

looks like a bug they're hashing out :) I see it too. You're not crazy, lol

But you're already a Premium member There should be no barrier to your commenting on a WA blog.

And you can attach screenshots here.

Now I can. Couldn't before

i get same msg. i closed everything out & came back to same msg. it is intermittent tho'

Clearly an intermittent bug, Tai. You should report it to Site Support.

Kyle is aware.
He was in live chat when I posed the question there first
