70th anniversary of the D-Day landings

Tonight as I write this from my home in South Australia, is the 5th of June.

70 years ago, at this same time in England, 24,000 US, British and Canadian paratroops were checking their equipment for the last time, for soon after midnight, they would spearhead the invasion into France that would be the tipping point in the war against Hitler in an tactical military operation called Overlord.

As the sun began to break the dawn on the beaches of Normandy, over 150,000 allied troops would have spilled out of their landing craft and stormed the beaches, like a swarm of angry bees.

Despite thousands of casualties on the side of the allies, it was the beginning of the end for Nazi occupied Europe. 6/6/44 such an incredible date to remember.

Let us remember. Let us celebrate. Let us just spend a moment in gratitude for the brave men who fought so desperately for our liberty. Lest we forget.

Some of those men who landed on those beaches, Omaha, Sword, Utah, Gold and Juno, are still alive - well into their 90's now, but if you see them wearing their medals, nod your head in a silent salute of respect.

They truly have earnt it. They truly deserve it.

Lest we forget.

We should honor those that gave their lives. But we should also honor those that are still alive. A great post.

Great post and thank you for sharing Savant .... I've been reading books on WWII again, my grandfather was in the Big Red One in WWII ... we are loosing more and more of those old heroes everyday, we need to take time to remember those that are lost and those that are still here...lest we forget

Great post.

My Father who just turned 99, was a Captain in the Army and served in WWII in Europe - we should never forget all Veterans, but those who fought in this war deserve a special thanks - can you imagine a world with Hitler in charge - OMG, what would have become of us!!!!

The Brave young men of D Day will always be remembered for their sacrifice. God Bless You All!

I remember learning this but I forgot the date.

Thank you for that post as without it I would have never thought about those brave men and women on all sides fighting evil so that we could all live in freedom. NEVER FORGET NEVER SURRENDER
Have a great day!

Couldn't have said it better! One of the survivors Major Dick Winters wrote a great book "Beyond Band of Brothers". Great book! Great man!!

Lovely tribute to all those military and civilians who risked there lives , fighting for freedom and not forgetting those who all went out to rescue those trapped on the beaches... least we forget
