How to Choose Your Niche? (BROAD vs NARROW)
When choosing a niche, people often ask me,
"Roope, should I choose something broad (for example, fitness) or something more narrow (for example, bench press)?"
My Experience
After seeing 1,000's of people starting out here, a more typical mistake when choosing a niche is that it's too broad rather than narrow.
I've heard people say things like,
"I'm gonna just go with a 'general' topics;"
"Maybe I'll just post about my life."
"I'll tell about my travel experiences on my blog."
Etc. Etc.
This all sounds nice but if you want to get results, you need to choose something more specific.
Here are 3 benefits of choosing some specific niche rather than just talking about something general:
- It's easier for people to follow you because they know what to expect.
- It's easier for you to create content because you know what to focus on.
- As far as I know, Google appreciates websites that are focused on specific niche rather than "general ones". When you talk about a specific niche, you are always using similar keywords and Google notices it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Can You Go Too Narrow?
Yes, it's possible too.
That's why I usually advise that when you are choosing your niche, you should already have some idea what kinds of products you are going to promote.
If you can't come up with any product ideas, the chances are that it's not the best niche for your business.
That being said, I'd advise you rather pick something more narrow than too broad.
You can always broaden your niche afterward.
Where Is the Money?
The truth is that people are willing to spend more money in some niches than in others.
For example, in business and investing niches people are usually ready to spend more money because they expect that their purchase will make them more money in return.
That being said, you can find examples in the world people becoming millionaires and billionaires in numerous different industries.
My recommendation is to pick something that you love doing. I think Steve Jobs' quote works well for picking your niche:
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle."
Examples:
Here are a few exmples of industries and niches. It's important to understand the difference. Industry = Broad. Niche = Narrow
Industry:
Travel
Niche:
Luxury travel in Asia
Industry:
Language learning
Niche:
Learning Spanish online
Industry:
Technology
Niche:
Best Laptops
And just as a reminder:
You can always broaden your niche afterward. It's usually better to start with something too specific and broaden it later rather than something very broad from the start.

Well said Roope, The purpose of a niche-specific is to focus on one direction. If you keep going left to right and vs versa, you will never get to your destination.
My website is only very new Roope but the niche is playing guitar and I've already sold several guitars. I'm inspired by all your YouTubes.
