What Can You Do About Your Website Design

How To Find A Website Designer

Hi Folks

I published a blog recently within WA about Web Design and I have been asked lots of questions since then about how to get someone to design a site. I have to add those questions where mostly from new members. I also have to add that I pointed them in the direction of the training. After all that's where most of us learned the basics of creating a website.

In this blog I will give a few pointers on how to look for a web designer. Unless you are an accomplished programmer, you are going to have to spend some money at this point. If you are not going to take orders online, then a static site, primarily for image purposes, is a good way to start.

If not then you must have a clear idea what you want. For example, is the server you are thinking about Linux/Apache or Windows based? Will it support dynamic pages, or only static, and if they do support dynamic will they support both PHP as well as ASP, or do they stick to one aspect of dynamic? If these terms mean nothing to you, you are going to need the services of a webmaster, and now is the time to seek out and hire one.

Web designers tend to specialize, so don't feel like you need to get someone who is versed in every aspect of website design.

If you just want a basic HTML site then just about anyone with web design experience should be able to help. However please don't call a relative who just took an intro course at the community college. Because you are building a business website you will want someone who knows something about business as well as websites.

If you need a dynamic database driven site, you will need someone who understands PHP and MySQL. One who does ASP and Microsoft SQL may not be able to help.

There are many choices you can make here, but if cost is a major factor, stick with PHP, MySQL and some form of Linux. You may not know what they are, but when I say that they are free to use, it may give you a good enough reason to think that way. And, believe it or not, there are A LOT of people supporting these products without pay.

In my opinion, MySQL rivals any database system in the world for almost any use, and it is totally free for you to use. This is one time that you get a lot more than you pay for!

The Yellow Pages are a good place to look for a designer. The size of the Ad may give you an idea of experience and cost. Somewhere with many programmers is going to be more expensive, but may save money in the long run. In any case, make sure you get as many estimates as you can.

A good web designer should be able to build a mock up, or rough demo, for you early on to give you an idea of what the site may look like. They can put together some basic pages, add images and some generic text to give you a feel for the site, but do not expect to see a final site before you fork over some cash.

There are generally two ways to pay for a project like this, either a flat fee or by the hour. If you know precisely what you want, then go for a flat fee. If you do that, however, do not expect to make a lot of changes or additions that you expect to be done at no cost.

For most people an hourly based time and materials contract is best. The designer can give you ball-park estimates and tell you what it will cost per hour for anything else.

Ok folks that's all I have to say about web design and designers. Please remember if your website design is not all that it could be do not ask me as I stopped doing this line of work several years ago. However there is one member that I know of who still does this kind of work. You might like to contact them and I'm sure they will give you more tips and advice.

Have a great day and be successful.

Thanks Robert,

Clear and concise instructions with no fluff. Just the way it should be. The infographic at the end is especially helpful.

Alex

Hi Alex and thank you for reading.
Website design isn't for everyone but that graphic at the end gives you a good idea what you should aim for when creating your own site.
Have a good one.
Robert

Thanks Robert...but since you lost me after “hi” I’ll be sticking with Wordpress!
I’m glad there are folks here who understand the language, and have an opportunity to build another stream of income that way.
All the best.
KyleAnn

Hello KyleAnn and thank you for stopping by.
Website design can be a tricky thing to get to grips with and if your knowledge is limited then best let a professional do it for you.

Perhaps sometime in the future you could do a course to learn the basics.

I did put a good infographic at the bottom to give you some idea what you should aim for when creating your site within WA.

Enjoy your day and the rest of the week.
Robert

Yes, I appreciate your detailed information. You explained it very well.

Hi Richard and thank you for your visit and for your compliment.
Sometimes I wish I was still involved with it but then again maybe not as there is a lot of work involved and especially if you agree to do the maintenance as well.

Perhaps its something you might take up in the future after your training here it could be a way to go to earn some extra cash.
Have a great day and the week to come.
Robert

Hi Marmar and thank you for your visit and your comment.
It can be confusing to build a website on your own and that is why there are people out there who will do it for you.

WA has the basic training to get you started so I suggest you follow it and you will have a decent site eventually and it will make you money.
Have a good one.

Hello Saliman and thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment.
With your background in engineering you will be well used to working with the fine detail that's required for creating a website.
You also have the wealthy affiliate training as a guide as well.
Enjoy your Sunday.
Robert

Thank you very much This will help me to be able to change in the future

Its always best to have more than one income source Saliman.
Have a great Monday.
Robert

Thank you, Robert. Yes, backup is your most important action for this venture!

Hi Mike and thank you for dropping by.
Yes indeed there has to be back up.
What a waste if you have a great website built and then due to an unforeseen event you lose everything and no backup copy available.
I personally take a backup of my sites at least once a week.
Are you thinking about building websites for an extra income?
Good money to be made if you are.
It does take a lot of work though and you could easily end up having to do all the maintenance as well.
Have a good one Mike.
Robert

I've been slogging at it Robert!

Ever Owards and Ever Upwards Mike.
Have a great Monday when it dawns for you.
Robert

HI Robert... clear outlines for those seeking a good webbuilder.
Today wordpress is used by 25% of bloggers.
Which is huge...

Would you advice wordpress for professionals and professional use?

There are 21.4 billion page views a month for WordPress, I would say yes. :P

Hi there!
Back from space?

Still hovering around... I thought I drop by Fleeky and bring Fleeky some Space Chocolates. :P

Oooh... love them!

Hi Fleeky and thank you for your visit and comment.
Wordpress is a great resource for beginners and the more experienced alike.
But of course there are people that can't get to grips with technology and want someone else to take care of that for them.
Some need website designers, its as simple as that.
Enjoy your Sunday.
Robert

yes a lot of people use Wordpress but if you want a site built from scratch to your own specifications then a good website designer is the way to go.
Thank you for your visit.
Robert

Yes... true..
Are you still building websites

True, but there hangs a price card on that as well, so if you want to try it out first, without spending lots of money, WordPress gives you that, a designed site for your special niche is always better in most cases. For some niches WordPress is not the choice and you should get a better programming language and programmers who can make your idea work.

As I said in my blog I stopped doing it a few years ago.
It does take a lot of work and its usually ongoing as well if you agree to do the maintenance.
Robert

Yes indeed. A website built to your specific design is money well spent when you think about the countless other run-of-the-the-mill ones out there.

When I did it I was never without clients so it is a good way to earn a lot of money in a short period of time.
Robert

Yes...

Onwards and Upwards.
Robert

Yes!
