Search Engine Ranking And Meta Tag Optimisation
I was compelled to publish this variation of a blog I published about a year ago after noticing several member's SEO efforts from sites I was asked to give my opinion on. I noticed that some of them didn't have a Meta Tag.
Ok I know very well that some 'Experts' say that the Meta Tag is now obsolete, and the big search engines don't use it for indexing and ranking purposes any more. I say its not obsolete and it is still used by the major search engines and is very important to search engine ranking. If you need proof of how important Meta Tags are, try removing your Meta Tags and watch what happens to your listing on the search engine results. Your site will drop out of sight.
This is an example of how essential Meta Tags are to your web page and also to your search engine results rank position. One of my sites was ranking well with Google, Bing and Yahoo (Page 1). So to check the obsolete Meta Tag theory I changed a word or two (keywords) in the Meta Description Tag and my site dropped to the next page in Google, third in Yahoo, and fifth in Bing. As far as I'm concerned this is proof enough that major search engines definitely use Meta Tags for ranking and indexing web pages.
The Title Tag is also one of the most important on page factors to consider. This is because search engine spiders read this tag first and place a high level of importance on the keywords found there. Did you know that the Title Tag is also used as the title of your listing in the search results?
The contents of your Title Tag will also appear in the top left corner of the browser bar. Correct Title Tag optimisation is essential and will result in a dramatic increase in your search engine ranking. The Title Tag should contain at least one or more keywords to be of any relevance to the webpage.
Internet search engine spiders browse the Description Meta Tag next. This tag is often used as a description of the site in the search results. The Description Tag also needs to include a few keywords. The Keyword Meta Tag is also essential to find engine ranking giving internet search engine spiders an example of relevant text and content inside a webpage.
Other Meta Tags include robots, reference, publisher, copyright etc. These tags aren't as important as the Title, Keyword and Description Tags, nonetheless they should be included when possible. To attain high search engine results positioning optimise your meta data. Proper on-page marketing will improve your internet search engine position - guaranteed!
To finish - Meta Tags are frequently an overlooked factor which can improve the ranking of most any website - do not ignore this aspect of SEO!

Is this something you can only do in the text editor with code or is there an easy way in the visual editor? Can we do this with All-In-One or Yoast?
Sometimes I find these kinds of explanations vague in details.
Yes you create your own Meta Description in Edit Mode.
If you don't then Wordpress will do it for you but usually only takes the first few words of your article/blog and those words might be useless as a description of your article/blog.
If you are using Yoast then Yoast will insist you type in a Meta Description.
If you find it hard to understand my blogs then you should ask questions like you are now.
I'm not a mind reader and put the information in my blogs as best as I can and in the simplest terms.

OK, that is what I have sometimes been confused by. The difference between Meta Description and Meta Tags.
