Choosing a NICHE (the main topic of your website and your target audience) is the first genuine hurdle in the OEC training.

Some newbies struggle to understand the concept of a niche and what it entails. Some also find it extremely difficult to choose a niche and narrow it down, and I don't blame them. Choosing a niche can lead to information overload. You have millions of choices and you need to pick one.

If you're struggling with this lesson, or are not happy with your current niche, have a look at the "additional tips" section below.

Level 1 Lesson 3 Summary - Choose a Niche

  • What is a Niche? The concept explained.
  • When choosing a niche, keep in mind you're going to write content and a lot of it.
  • The most valuable tip in this lesson: "When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert."
  • In the "Choosing your direction video", Kyle explains what a niche is and how to find your niche.
  • The platforms he uses in the video to help with your research are:
    • Answers.com
    • Amazon.com - Amazon is a great resource to find niche ideas even if you're not using their affiliate program. Here is a link to Amazon's complete directory: Amazon Full Directory
    • Use Google instant to see what people are searching for in a niche.
  • Do a quick search to see if the niche/s you're interested in have any affiliate programs. Find affiliate programs on Google by typing the following in Google search:
    • affiliate programs+product/service name

    Conclusion

Finding a niche is easy for some people and a nightmare for others. Choosing the wrong niche is also a costly mistake and a lot of time wasted. I'm talking from experience.

Take some time to find your niche. Don't overthink it for days or weeks, but don't rush into it either.

Pretty comprehensive post on choosing a niche. Choosing a niche has been a nightmare for many a newbie. There are just too many niches to pick from and many newbies find it bewildering to pick one.
Hopefully, your post would bring some comfort to those who are finding it difficult to pick a niche.

Thank you Dada. Niches are a headache for nearly everyone. I hope this will help.

I've been thru the training 2 times, and still more to learn.

I agree Roger. It can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Have a great day.

Very helpful accumulation of valuate choosing niches blogs.

Choosing a niche is difficult and yet so key. Thanks for doing this.

I agree George. Choosing a niche is not easy, especially if you're new to all of this. Kyle does say in training, you should not overthink it and not spend more than 30 mins on finding your niche. I agree with the overthink part, but I personally wished I had spent more time choosing my first niche when I started. It would've saved me a lot of time in the end.
