NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

Hi Wealthy Affiliates!

Greetings from South Africa :-)

I would like to pick your brains if you'd allow me please.

I am in the process where I need to choose my niche and at the moment what I would like to specialize in, is self-development.
I believe that I can add value in other's lives by opening up the worldly possibilities unto them through self development and self up-skilling. This obviously involves growth in different areas of their lives.
Any ideas on how to structure such an offering?

Are you targeting a specific age, gender, or group?
It just seems like it's a bit broad, as it stands.

Thanks Diane, I thought that is it broad too.

Looking at my current situation and the impact that COVID 19 has had in my life and country as a whole, I would be targeting the recently retrenched, unemployed graduates and people that are looking for alternative options to generate income. Not certain if this is clear enough?

That brings it more into focus. Young graduates who find themselves in need of new life direction. I'm not sure how to word the actual niche, but you can probably put that together. And it is a necessary focus, I believe. 🙂

Thanks for the feedback, Diane. Much appreciated :-)

Is it my understanding that it is better to choose something more specific like "dog food" over something more broad like "dog products"? On the one hand I can see the something specific being more straight forward and easier for a customer to navigate while also being somewhat product limited...But on the other hand I can see something more broad having potential for more products but maybe that becomes too overwhelming. Thoughts?

Hi Brianna, dog food is a good niche and so is products, but perhaps a bit too broad. It could be narrowed down a little bit. You can take a look at my site if you'd like to. mydogshealthyfoods.com

Hi - you need to be seen as an authority on your subject by Google. This is easier to achieve if you have a narrow niche. Fewer topics but more in-depth.

Once well- established, you could expand the niche to something broader. So, using your example, when you have 20 or so articles on feeding dogs, you could perhaps start adding articles on health supplements for dogs.

My website is a blog-roll, so there is no content in Home Page.
Before I wrote any content, I filled out Home Title and Description. Since then, I have wrote two posts, the first one is "About me" and second one is "Work at Home Business, but I did not fill out title and description, because there is no instruction to do it.

However, according to Jay's video, "SEO 101 - The Basics" from April 17, 2020, whenever we write a post, we should fill out title and description on each post. Does it mean that I should fill out title and description on both posts besides Home Page Settings?
Thank you for your help.

Hi Tomoko,

When we write on the Site Content, we should put our Title then later after we publish it, it will be shown in the AIO SEO as the Meta Title.
The first 100 words we write will be the Meta description.

Kyle did show how to do it in this training: See the attached picture:

I reviewed this lesson however, I don't see that Kyle shows anything about Meta Title and Description. Can you tell me where he says and where do you see the attachment in this lesson?

Hey there,
You're write, Kyle doesn't really show that... But Jay did as you mentioned above.

And yeah it's better to fill the meta title and description for all posts...

I do it on all my posts.

Meta Description is the first 160, not 100.
Thank you.

Yes, I know. In AIO SEO it's 160. I use different SEO.

I'm into the Fine Arts, cooking, sewing, and crafting. Can I make money on these things? I teach piano as well. I work as a pianist at the local school district with high-schoolers and junior- highers as well. I travel with them to concerts and contests and general traveling to fun things.

That's awesome!

All of these subjects are common and enjoyable. As long as you have an audience I believe it's possible. And there's no shortage of an audience for any subject. Just reach out, I'm sure they will find whatever you put out.

Just started and need to say that i love your voice Kyle. It is so refreshing to listen to someone in this arena with a lovely calm voice, Great diction and pleasant tone as well as a down to earth KISS approach. I was in education for 35 years as a teacher and lecturer so i do know how rare it is to find this.
