NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Hi Kyle

How exiting! I have my own website! Thank you!!

Just a question please - site name should have an apostrophy, but I can't use it in the URL. Is it okay if I use it in my site name, but it is not in the URL? I don't want people to enter my site, roll their eyes and say that I can't even spell because there is no apostrophy.

Thanks

Hey there, I'm not Kyle, but I can answer your question with 100% certainty :)

You can't use an apostrophe in your URL. However, it's okay to use the name that contains one.

For example, one very successful guy in my niche (he's also a member of WA) has a site called I've Tried That and his URL is: https://ivetriedthat.com/

If you can come up with the name that does not contain the apostrophe, that would the best thing to do. But as you can see, everything works so it's really up to you.

Just remember, you can't use special characters in URL itself.

It is exciting to have your own website because it belongs to you. It is your personal property because it is registered and you pay for it.

We wish you success when you chose your domain name and build your website.

Hello Community -

Up to now, most if not all, make money online business props have been around attracting the 1st time buyer (to your site) & having them purchase. And yes that is the 1st step, but when it comes to "scaling up" your business \income - how do you do that?

Thought Exercise:
1) Need to always find new people - well that's good when the pool is big (which internet is) &only; need them to buy 1x - well that's a short term objective ignoring other approaches. Esp when soooo many good people are becoming unemployed.

2) Need to get the 1st sale - "Hello - I trust you sale" --but that's only the start -- how do you "build" a relationship of future trust?

Note: due to new online data privacy laws -- "cookie based" tracking will be retired. FB pixel will be obsolete - so think & develop a "relationship" with our clients so you don't need a ton of new clients, but rather you help our client community solve their problems with the insight, guidance & patience they are seeking in a "search engine" driven world. Sales are driven by depth not by width..

Please provide comments, thoughts to discuss & explore as a community - all the best pax.

Well I don't mean to sound "cut throat" but since this type of work, affiliate marketing, depends on a consumer purchasing something, we will have to look for indicators of those people that are able to work from home and those still employed, who may still be able to travel to work.

We would have to find out what that type of consumer would like to buy. If you have looked at Amazon in the news lately, they have hired more people and are extremely busy!! Which means that there are people indeed who are still spending money freely!!

In response to your second questions, trust is built on the content and advice you provide plus the dependability of the supplier of the product.

If you site addresses "everything about xxx" you can be come the "go to" site for people to return to.

If you search and shop online do you go to the same website for a specific product niche? If so why? Questions like this will help you to understand how visitors feel when they go to your site and why they return.

We wish you much success.

I am a kind of man who enjoy sharing knowledge with other people, I think my niche could be something related to books, I have experience working as tutor, I can speak Portuguese, English, Spanish and a little bit of French. I have one question. Is there a niche about my preferences. I really love books and something related to tourism, but tourism right now is not a good idea, because we are face a global pandemic.
Reply
Mikael7 you must be very smart reading all those books. It's impressive you speak all those languages. I also love travel and tourism although I've not gotten to travel much except to places I moved to. And not very exciting places either. I can relate to what you said as I'm also not sure what to choose for my niche.

Perhaps you can try American students who love to study Portuguese (or any other foreign language).

Hi, it can take 3 - 6 months to see any income. This is a long term commitment and takes months of consistent work.
Reply

Hi, absolutely.

Is your own domain hosted at WA?

If not, you have a choice either to transfer onto WA, or point.

To be able transfer, it has to be a .com / .net or .org Otherwise,

To update your domain DNS settings to point to WA. Here are the DNS settings.

ns1 . mywahosting . com (no spaces)
ns2 . mywahosting . com (no spaces)

These settings will be updated within your domain registrar (where you purchased your domain) after the transfer has taken place.

Hi Christina! About what you asked, I was wondering the same thing myself. But I don't have my own domain as of yet, however, I built several pages of an easy build free website using one of those free sitebuilders but not here on wealthyaffiliate. I'm wondering if I need to start all over again.

Even though you can always fix your pages, I think the earlier you fix mistakes the better. Asking questions definitely helps. Try getting those pages on Wealthy Affiliate. If you can't, I would start from scratch and perhaps follow some of the previous outline if necessary. I hope this helps!
