NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

Not built my first web site yet, but wondered if I should use the Rubix extension one demonstrated by Kyle IF (as I have) already registered a domain name which ends in .co.uk. That is can I continue using the Rubix one to build it first & experiment, then transfer it over to the .co.uk domain name or do I need to 'import' this .co.uk domain name BEFORE I start building it? By the way, I am currently only a Starter member, not Premium.

As a starter, you can use one siterubix subdomain. It remains valid for six months on the starter package.

To input your .co.uk , you have to upgrade first to be able use the hosting that comes with your premium membership. You can then later move your siterubix to your .co.uk if you so wish to.

It would be better for SEO and ranking to build on own domain vs a free subdomain. Subdomains remain the property of WA.

Hello from Nottingham! You won't be able to transfer your .co.uk domain here, (country specific domains cannot be hosted here) but you can point the nameservers to WA, which will allow you to use it here. However, you will need to be a premium member to do this. You will still need to pay the domain fees to your initial registrar.

If you start with your free siterubix, then it is a simple process to transfer everything over to your own domain once you go premium, you don't lose any of your work or have to start again.

Abie - Many thanks for the amazingly speedy response. The community is certainly very active if I can get answers to questions this quickly. I will, on your recommendation proceed with the siterubix domain first as I will undoubtedly become a Premium Member in the next few days and as you say that will then allow me to do the transfer to the .co.uk domain later.
Regards - Ian

As Diane has mentioned, you'd be able point your .co.uk to WA servers by changing the DNS nameservers from your current registrar. You won't be able to transfer to WA. WA hosts a .com / .net / .org

Hi Abie - Another thought initiated by your phrase '..if you wish to'. If I do eventually use the .co.uk domain will this then be hosted somewhere else and therefore the free things Kyle talked about that WA provide for sites developed with the WA tools like anti spam and the high speed aspects - would I potentially lose those if I transfer to .co.uk?

You domain can stay with the current registrar, however you're pointing the DNS servers to WA. So then you can add your domain, it will be listed in your sites manager and can benefit from what the platform offers.

Diane - Many Thanks - nice also to know you're UK based. Based on yours and Abie's comments I will start on the siterubix sub domain and once I've become premium and registered my .co.uk domain (as was suggested), will move all my build to that - which will hopefully be better with regard to SEO as I build & publish it.

Hi WA Family!! I think I have a Nice, BUT I have way too many branches in mind. For example, I wanted to go with Baby strollers AND Car seats and clothing for babies getting Christened. I know I am all over the place here! Can someone please reel me in, in the right direction?

you can do both strollers and car seats since there are strollers combos!

I think baby strollers and car seats fit together well. Maybe not the Christened :)

What about "safe baby transportation" or "safe baby travels" as your niche. That could include strollers, car seats, and maybe one other thing as your main topics you hit.

Lots of potential with this one IMO!

I really like those ideas! I'm with you, I see lots of potential here as well. I am also thinking about "learning apps for babies" which could be included with "safe baby transport/travels" I suppose?? Wow, i'm getting excited now!! :-)

Hi guys, just a question. I'm currently choosing the right niche for me. I'm an English teacher and I think that English Teaching should be a nice point of start, but I don't know what kind of products should I promote.

Should I go for books, courses and things like these?

Thanks beforehand

I think you should look into educational products. Your profession will give you the advantage. The promotional products are broad in this field. There are tons of educational products you can do research on and use them to build your related niches. All the best!

You could include cultural aspects of the English language. Such as a British flag, American flag, or other culture aspects of where people speak the language. Just a thought

Hi
I have added a widget called Custom HTML to my Main sidebar in WP which I have named "Buyers guide."

I have a post that I would like to place under this title (buyer's guide) Which at the moment is under the widget title called Recent Posts. Is it possible to move the post to my buyers guide. If so how can I do this.
many thanks
David
