Forced R & R

Well it has come to that time for some "Forced R&R".

It's been over 3 years now since my last surgery and that was to have the Thomas Plate put in for a High Tibial Osteotomy (basically it was to stop bone on bone grinding in the knee...YEEK). Don't worry I wont go into the gruesome side of what was done, but I have attached the X-Ray image of the plate & screws. As you can see in the x-ray I had a T-Plate & 8 screws "installed" on the right leg.... It fixed the issue of bone on bone.

Anyway just about 1 year after having this operation, I was back at Taekwondo training, it was a hot night, sweat was dripping off everyone. I felt pretty good and at the end of the night we were running through practicing flying kicks into the Instructor holding a Kick bag....

O I forgot to mention, Um I'm not 16 years old any more and I was trying to keep up with the young ones...

Any way I had already done 2 kick leading with the right leg, gee it felt good hitting the bag, and I thought for the very last one I would swap legs and lead with the left, the run up was good the flying was good even the kicking the bag was great.... but the landing was the end of me. As I landed with my right leg, my foot slipped on a sweaty floor, it slipped straight out from under me and I went down like a big bag of spuds. The pain was excruciating - I knew it wasn't good.

I had this horrible feeling with the knee being extremely weak that I had done some major damage.... That was the end of the Taekwondo training. My worst fears were confirmed after having a CT Scan, the ACL was snapped....

Well I have put up with the snapped ACL for the last 2 years now, but the knee has become very unstable as well as impacting on my health considerably, so I have decided that I need that it is time to have it fix, but to have this fixed they first have to take my T-Plate & screws out. Then they can give me 2 new screws to hold in the new ACL....

I had the surgery yesterday and I am now back at home starting to recover, my Doctor was great, he had given me the T-Plate & screws that he removed (My spare parts :-D). I was quite shocked, the plate & screws are actually longer than what I expected, simply amazing what they can do. Here you can see just how long it is, I put a box of matches in so you can get an idea of how long it is.

So with all this finally done I have been forced on to a little bit of R&R unfortunately it wont be on a beach anywhere, hopefully after a couple of days I can get back online.

Thats awesome how you got right back into action! Well hopefully you heal real quick to 100%!

Thanks Billy, I am not fully back in action, but I am getting around more and not relying on pain meds as well, which is a great sign.
Cheers

Hope you have a complete and speedy recovery. That is one awesome piece of hardware! Best wishes.

Thanks Quincy, I couldn't resist in asking for my "Spare Parts", I am pretty impressed the Ortho gave them to me as well.
Recovery will be a slow process, but if done right I will be 100% in about 8 to 9 months time. :-)
Cheers

Hey Paul we're not kids any more. I walk and do a 15 min work out on a Total Gym but try not to stress the joints. Over the years I had a lot of ware and tare on shoulders and Knees.

I had job related shoulder surgery and use a supplement for my knees.

I hope your R+R goes well and recovery is fast.

Marty

So True Marty, I don't think I forgetting that we are not kids any more, maybe it is I am not letting go of being a kid :-)
O well now I will be looking for a less stressful recreation sport.
Cheers

Hope the recovery goes well. Take care and try to enjoy the R and R. :)

Thanks Judy, it will be a long process but I am sure time will fly.

Ewwww, that doesn't sound like fun. My knee is bone on bone and has been for quite a while now but I don't want to have surgery. I had hip surgery a couple years ago and that was bad enough. Take care of yourself. At least you can be on your computer.

Thanks Debbi, I hope that your knee does cause you too much burden.
At least with a laptop I can move it around to wherever I am resting :-)

Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope you will be back online soon.
Debby

Thanks Debbie, I am slowly getting back into action, I am just taking every opportunity to absorb as much rest as possible to help with recovery.

Enjoy the R&R as much as you can. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks Ron, rest definitely helps recovery.
cheers
Paul

May you heal quickly...may pain live"somewhere else" than with you....your outlook is is incomprehensible! !!! You are indeed special....

Thanks Rosie, thankfully over the last 2 days pain has been else where without pain meds too :-), I have been through the recovery for this before and I know if I follow the program I will come out on top. it just dawned on me --- If I follow the program I will come out on top, very much the same here too at Wealthy Affiliate.
Thanks

I admire your outlook and dedication to take on the task at hand and overcome!

Thanks Rosie

Praying for a good and speedy recovery for you Paul. I think KatieMac is right about trying Tai chi instead. Getting old is not for sissies!

Debby

Thanks Debby, I can see that I will be changing my high impact sports for something a little less taxing on the body.
Thanks

Wish you a speedy recovery, and perhaps its time to do something more along the lines of Tai chi lol even with my pins and plates holding my leg I would not risk it

:-) thanks Katie, yeah I think I have to hang up my Taekwondo belt for good now.
