Want to improve English. Help me please

Hi everyone, please call me Alex.

I want to improve my English. Any suggestions or help on "Self-Study tips"

I can't say "I'm not good at English" because I'm creating a blog post now. (But it also doesn't mean I'm good at English)

Reasons behind "I want to improve my English"

First of all, I can't feel expression. As you know, conversations are expressions. If someone's telling a joke, I can't laugh because I don't understand.

I don't know how much I know about English.

I don't know what is my Level.

I want to be social

I have problems when I tried to read other people blog posts. My apology, I don't understand well. And it takes a lot of my time.

Speed reading

You know? I can understand the whole paragraph within few seconds written in my native language. But for English, you know............

etc......etc......etc....

I not asking to become an English professor tomorrow or next month.

I just want to know how could I improve my English for spending 30 minute or an hour per day.

English language making me depressed and I wanna fight it back.

Thank you so much

Alex

Hi Alex,

Because you have the desire to learn English you will.
It is a difficult language, and it will take some time to learn.
But every step forward that you take, every new word that you learn it good. It is progress.

We do not know your native language, and most of us would have a huge amount of difficulty learning it.

Have a nice day and God bless,
Mike

Thank you so much Mike. I found a lot of legit jobs out there and all of them are saying "We need english fluent" lol. It's simple, very difficult to get a job. Thank you for your kindness Mike.

You won't need a job when you finish all the training here at WA.
You will be a self-employed person making a good amount of money.

Keep working at the courses here, and you will become successful.

Mike

You are right, Mike. But it is a long journey. And I am not a rich man and so I also need part time jobs like freelancing. :) :) :)

Hey Alex,

All the conments seem to be right on point; I especially like what Harvey wrote. Practice.....as often as you can, in any form that you can (reading out loud, videos, speaking face-to-face, etc.).

I've said too many times, that I would like to learn another language, but never really took the steps to do so. I really respect your efforts.

I wish you great success Alex!

Veronica

Thank you so much Veronica

Great goal in life. thanks, for sharing and keep up the great work.

Hello Alex I commend you for learning a second or third language, it is not easy. I remember when I was learning French for my work, most of the instructors recommended, reading the newspaper daily, comic books; listening to a good radio station, watching television. Most of these will help with the expression. For speaking the suggestion was to go out to places where you will meet English speaking individuals. When I was in Japan, I was approached a lot in restaurants and bars by individuals who wanted to practice their English. That was great for me, because I had someone to speak with but also I got a lot of free drinks while they practiced. All the best on your journey.

It's very nice suggestion. I really appreciate that Harvey. Thank you so much for your help....

Give it a go - it's free.

Thank you so much Cate. A lot of blog posts to read. A great website. I hope I can take one per day. :) :) :) Thanks a lot....

Best way to improve your English is to read - books.
Slowish process so some grammar lessons should help.

PS. A man called Joseph Conrad taught himself English by reading the KJ Bible and Shakespeare - and google him to see what he did with it.

Thank you so much Cate :) :) :)

I am trying to learn Italian at the moment and I find it helps me to read an online newspaper. I look at the words and try to get the meaning before I hit the translate button :)

Ohhhh, that is my goal Jude...to learn Italian! I should try that. I really should finish Spanish first though!!! Especially since we want to adopt from Columbia one day!!

One step (or language) at a time Jessica! :)

Thank you so much Jude

Hello Alex,
Your English is pretty good. I am a native English speaker but I have heard that English is a very difficult language to learn. This is due to the high number of words that have similar spellings or the same spelling but different meanings. Also, we have words in English that come from a large variety of other languages so there is little consistency sometimes with spelling.

I am not sure the best way for you to improve. I would think that just reading English daily would help. You obviously know some English grammar already but it doesn't hurt to keep studying it. Many English speakers don't know all the grammar rules or they forgot them after school. We just know what sounds correct, which is harder for you.

I have seen many people here at WA recommend grammarly.com. It is a free grammar checker that is supposed to be very good.

Good luck!
Jessica

Hi Jessica, thank you so much for your advise and support. The one you suggest is really amazing. Thank you so much for this

I'm glad I could help a little! You are welcome.

Nicely explained, Jessica. As an English tutor, the points you make are very valid. Regular conversation is a wonderful way of improving English skills. The grammar will come later.

Thanks. I taught English as a Second Language many years ago when I started college. That was conversation based.
