OCDC where SERPS are concerned?
If you get a little pre-occupied as to your progress up the Search Engine Results Pages, there are some extensions to the Chrome Browser (same goes for Firefox- same names) which can help and some small changes you can make to the browser settings too.
Others will have their own ways, and possibly better tools too..please comment
This is best done when you are signed out of Gmail/G+ etc.
First-Perform your search in an incognito window ctrl+shift+n you can then modify the number of results displayed
Second- (you are In Google) perform any search first then, click on the gear icon and go to advanced search settings. Click radio button to never show instant results and then slide the results slider up to 100. Scroll down, click save settings and it will return you to the now first 100 results.
Then- To see if you are ranking, do ctrl+f, then type your url in the box and hit return, it will tell you whether it has been found, and you click on the arrows to find the result you searched for.
If you are going boss-eyed trying to work out the number you come in at, you can always head over to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/number-search-engine-resu/mnnjndoiehcknbcbclpcbaageafndkff
and install the extension there. It works in Bing and Yahoo too...you might have to click on a button to ensure that it is enabled in incognito windows..
You should do an incognito window, as a minimum, but for truly neutral results go to www.duckduckgo.com Don't ask me why they called it that though..
Numbered search results won't work here, but as you scroll down more results will continue to open up, and you can do the ctrl+f thing again...
If you want a quick heads up within Chrome as to on page optimization of your site, another extension of value is seoquake, install it by going to the four horizontal bars icon in the top right of your browser window..go to settings then on the top(ish) left in a stand alone section, extensions is the middle one, click on it, then find extensions, and put seoquake in, and it will come up, click install, it will check and then it will be added to chrome. or do a Google search for it....
Note- the icon will show, grayed out for inactive, red/green ghastly colors when active...click on it and enable/disable as necessary- don't perform your Google searches with it enabled or it will go find the parameters for all of the displayed results.. I tend to go to the site I want to check, then enable it, hit refresh and take it from there...
it gives- in table form information on links, sitemap, language, RSS feed found our not, keywords, keyword density, text/picture ratio, whether images have alt tags on or not, analytics found or not, and much more- and tells you what to do about any "errors". Don't get too over the top about it, it is rule of thumb rather than strict guidelines type of thing.
Hope this is of use to the community, Andy
