Whats with this "Rank" thing?
I am a bit perplexed as to the apparent "need" to improve my "Rank" withing WA. Sure I understand the social thing and paying back to the community type of thing but. What is in it for ME? Why would I want to spend all this time on improving my rank.
I see 4 tendencies.
- The people who don't bother with anything. No rank, no apparent internet/website activity that one can see.
- Those who spend their lives on WA, improving the community and helping members improve financial position and lives, but who seem to do little for themselves in the way of their Online businesses. Who ultimately end up with great Rank.
- Others who have great rank and who are really good at what they do with their online business.
- Then there are those who did some rank building but who don't really interact. They joined, learnt everything WA can teach them, but who quietly dedicate themselves to their online business instead.
At the risk of sounding selfish. The whole reason why I am here is, to learn a skill and to make, a double garage and an outhouse, full of money..... FOR ME!!!!
Why should I waste hours of my time helping others in the community? Is there something in it for ME? Besides satisfying my charitable and humanitarian, selfless side, in a public spirited display of altruism and benevolence, of course.
Just Asking, not trying to ruffle any feathers. :)

No feathers ruffled on my end! It's a valid question; there are some great comments below, but I particularly like what MKearns and jetrbby80316 stated.
Here's my take: it's really not a "rank thing" but a people thing. Just as you grow in your understanding of affiliate marketing, you'll have questions; people will answer those questions; you write posts; people read those posts; you need encouragement; people give encouragement...
I really believe the WA community equips us to be able to interact with the "outside" world in a way that's professional, considerate and engaging. There was a time hen I was stuck in going through the certification, and by stuck, I mean 3 weeks with one lesson kind of stuck. It was my interaction within the community that kept me sane. Yeah, my website was embarrassing, but my ranking improved. Was that my focus? Nope. But hey, I'm OK with the system that's in place. As with anything, it's all about the motive behind the action.
I'm still a baby, learning how to walk, but when I grow up. I want to not only built an Olympic-size swimming pool to hold all my money, but I want to give back to the community who has so generously given their time and knowledge to me, so I can build my Olympic-size swimming pool to hold my money. Plus, I think it's good for the soul to help and give your time to others.
I primarily answer questions because it helps me to keep my websites at the fore front of my mind, instead of forgetting about them for months on end. I'll answer a few questions and then start working on my websites. It helps ease the transition between being a couch potato to working on my websites.
Interesting Neville, not everyone is into the social media or network thing and I can't understand that. The thing about a business is the need to attract customers, by any means necessary (ethical). The old adage "build it and they will come," does not really work in today's market. You do need to communicate and network. What I have found here is their are extremely knowledgeable and sharing people here at Wealthy Affiliate. Each one of us brings some form of knowledge that someone else does not have. By sharing we all profit and our online business becomes that more richer. I am not that much into the ranking but it is a way of highlighting are far you have come, just don't get hung up on it.
I've picked up so many tips, tricks, techniques and ideas just in the comments portion of Wealthy Afilliate that I usually have to extend a thank you or short reply for providing such valuable information. Just that little avtivity and engagement has improved my rankings. Thanks for asking the question.
That's being very honest on your part. My ranking is a side effect of my interacting with the community. And I do that because it is helping me in so many ways to learn all the aspects of an online business...something you can't learn by just watching tutorials. This process shows us what is really needed to succeed. So grateful. Debbie
Well I think it can help me. I have learned more by sharing. Plus I was thinking I see you quite a lot. So see you are helping yourself. Asking questions is educating, writing is educating. There are people here that can critique you. Not a bad exchange while improving your rank.
Look at this another way. By helping others, you also help your business. Others will be more willing to share vital information, missing pieces to the puzzle left out of training.
I think you should be doing both, with the priority of working on your business to make it profitable of course, BUT continue to pay-it-forward. The latter doesn't take that much time.
In your case motivation is a double garage and outhouse full of money.
And for me, ranking reminds me of my younger years in school where we were ranked, and that was all that mattered.
Ranking at Wealthy Affiliate is all about helping it also includes creating and activity which determines your overall rank.
It is amazing what you can learn from someone asking a question.

For me : it is about networking and engaged with people with the same intention. Rank is Wealthy Affiliate method to build a conducive community to grow their business. But rank have psychologycal effects to motivate members to be more active. I want to help other members because I always get help from them when I ask questions.
