Hyphenated Domain Names: Do They Rank?

Back when I started one of my websites in 2012, I chose a hyphenated domain name. The non-hyphenated version cost over $3,000, so I opted to buy the $10 version instead!

But then I was constantly haunted by the idea that a hyphenated domain name would hurt my rank, or damage my business in the long-term.

After asking around SEO circles, the consensus was that YES, I had made a mistake! Bummer. But then I continued to ask normal bloggers as well as do my own research int Google's "official" word on the matter, and there seemed to be no evidence of it.

The only case study I could find was from back in 2010-2011, where someone purchased and EMD with all possible domain extensions, including the dot com with hyphens. The hyphenated version did rank poorly (near the bottom), but it had multiple hyphens, and the study only followed the rank over the course of a month, and was populated with mediocre content.

4 years later, my domain has no problem ranking. In fact, I've collected a few examples from recent searches (and will continue to add), showing that hyphenated domain names in fact, do rank well in search!

That being said, I still advice against using them, when possible. For one, it's a pain in the butt to explain your website address. Where's the hyphen? Is a hyphen and a dash the same thing?

Also, EMDs are not as powerful as they were in previous years, so it's not really that big of a deal whether you get a keyword in your domain or not. It's great if you can, but not required, since your pages will rank individually based on their own keywords.

Conclusion

If you have a domain with a hyphen, rest easy, you'll be fine. If you are considering buying a domain with a hyphen, consider other options before purchasing. There are more factors to consider when building a business outside of just "keyword in the domain name".

Should you opt for a hyphenated name, I suggest using just one, as well as putting it in a place that's easy to remember. I don't have any evidence that more hyphens are worse than fewer, but that's the general consensus. It could however, just be another case of SEO voodoo!

Also keep in mind that the vast majority of domains ranking do not contain dashes, so I'm not saying you should go buy a bunch of keyword-optimized dash-filled domains!

Don't forget, you can now purchase domains at Wealthy Affiliate! https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites/domains

They've done away with the shady upsell process and expensive renewal rates you'll find at a lot of domain registrars these days.

Here are the examples I've found so far, and I'll continue to add them as I come across them in SERPs.

Example #1

Actually, I can't remember search term. I was researching something about canned food and survivalism. That's a lot of hyphens!

Example # 2

This is a very famous brand and website in the online entrepreneur circle of influence. I tweeted the owner a few years ago and he said he's never had any issues ranking or growing his business.

Example # 3

My own domain ranking for a highly searched, competitive phrase!

Example # 4

135 searches, 27 QSR

Notice that the location of the hyphen can vary!

Great :-) This info couldn't have come at a better time! Thanks

Good to know! Thanks:) By the way, I have just started my 6th website:)) without hyphen ;)

Thanks for the info!

Awesome Post Nathaniell,

How did You decide where to put your hyphen?

One-MoreCupOfCoffee.com

OneMore-CupOfCoffee.com

OneMoreCup-OfCoffee.com

Have You ever thought of purchasing the others above as well and having them point to your OneMoreCupOf-Coffee.com site or would that not be becessary at this point?

Thank You for sharing this great information my Friend as I have recently been wondering about this as well and until now didn't realize that your site had a hyphen in it.

Keep Sharing & Caring Nathaniell,

Tony

That's a great question tony. I chose the hyphen at the end because I felt it was the most impactful. One more cup of what? Coffee! I also envisioned maybe having a series of lifestyle websites where I could have one more cup of something else, depending on what the niche was. Probably won't do that now, but that was the idea!

I wouldn't worry about purchasing the other domains at this point, because really, you could put the hyphen in any number of places, or just do MrOneMoreCupofCoffee.com and still get a similar domain name. It would just be too expensive to renew all those domains every year!

Awesome Nathaniell, I see your thought pattern now and that makes perfect sense. Thank You for sharing & caring, Tony

I created a domain name journey-to-financial-freedom and it got indexed right away and is currently on page one in google. So far, no adverse affects.

I clicked here to read the responses because I did not know the answer. I got a little education.

Thanks.

Nice work Nathaniell.
I have a website named sports-fixtures.com. Last year I thought I was flogging a dead horse so I removed the site from analytics, webmaster tools etc and began a money making website. After 3-4 months I realized that I actually enjoyed doing the sports-fixtures website more as this interests me more. So I set about building it again and ranking it.
As you can guess, sports fixtures is an extremely hard keyword to rank. I've been at it now for 4-5 months and my ranking is 'Page 6 of about 109,000,000 results'.
The point I'm making is that my hyphenated named website does rank. Obviously my pages rank better as I have longer keywords. The term '2016 super rugby schedule' is on page one on Bing. Still have trouble ranking in Google where my ranking is 37 for the same keyword.
My plan is to follow Jay's latest live training and write reviews of particular sporting products with great keywords to build up my ranking and sales. Patience, I need more patience!

Thank you Nathaniell for clearing this up about the hyphenated domain names, I feel much better knowing this information and what you have found out.
Great information!
Again thank you,
Linda

Thanks, Nathaniell. I was feeling bad about my business name but now I don't. It's a bit long and bulky but I see much longer and bulkier here in your examples and so don't feel so badly. It depends on content.
Sheila

What a coincidence, these days I was thinking about this issue after seeing somebody's new site with hyphens. Thank you for this text.
