Don’t Give Up: Lessons from a Boomer for New Bloggers Facing Adversity

Blogging is an exciting journey, full of creativity, connection, and growth. But if you’re new to the blogging world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when the results don’t come as quickly as you’d hoped. Views trickle in, engagement feels stagnant, and the temptation to give up looms large.

Let me share a lesson from the Baby Boomer ethos: Success isn’t born from ease it’s forged through persistence.

Boomers grew up in an era where patience and perseverance were the cornerstones of achievement. And for any new blogger ready to throw in the towel at the first sign of adversity, this mindset can be your key to turning challenges into victories.

The Boomer Perspective: Why Challenges Are Stepping Stones

Us Boomers have faced our fair share of obstacles, whether we were building careers from scratch, adapting to new industries or technologies, or navigating global shifts. We approached these hurdles with a simple philosophy: Keep showing up.

For new bloggers, this translates into understanding that early challenges are not roadblocks, but mere stepping stones. Maybe your posts aren’t getting traction yet, or you’re struggling to find your voice. Remember, even the most successful bloggers started small, mastering their craft one blog post at a time.

A Bad Blogging Attitude Can Hold You Back

When discouragement sets in, it’s easy to slip into a negative mindset. But just like in the workplace, a poor attitude can create a ripple effect:

  • You Doubt Your Ability - Negativity clouds judgment, making you question your skills and ideas. Your skills improve through practice. The more you write, the better you will get at it. Even the best writers weren't! Walt Disney was fired for being a poor writer.
  • You Lose Consistency - When effort wanes, so does your audience. Your readers will notice when your content becomes sporadic. Skip a few cycles of writing and they will move on to someone demonstrating interest in being consistent.
  • You Miss Learning Opportunities - Early challenges teach invaluable lessons about your niche, audience, and style. Giving up means leaving growth on the table.
  • You Set Uninspired Long-Term Goals - Every blog post, even the ones with low views, is a building block for your future success. Boomers understand that persistence, even in the face of setbacks, is the secret to long-term success.

Turning Adversity Into Opportunity: The Economics of Blogging

From a practical standpoint, every new blogger should consider the economic benefits of sticking with it:

  • Slow Starts Are Normal - Blogs gain traction through consistent, high-quality content. What feels like adversity today is laying the foundation for tomorrow’s traffic. Google knows that 95% of all niche bloggers quit and will sandbox new blogs. Pass their gauntlet and you will be rewarded with traffic when you come out the other side.
  • Your Niche Takes Time to Emerge - Blogging success often comes from refining your focus and connecting with the right audience, this can only happen by sticking with it. As you create new posts, take note of which ones generate a discussion and lean into those topics.
  • Each Post Is an Asset - Every blog post is a long-term investment in reaching your goals. Even if it doesn’t immediately perform, it contributes to your site’s authority and growth over time.

What is $1 Million Mean to You? While that was a great post to break down the numbers, many people don't have that need. But what about an extra $5~$10k a month? What are you willing to do to get there? Can you handle a couple of early hurdles?

Boomer Wisdom for Blogger Resilience

What can Boomers teach you about powering through the tough times as a blogger?

Here are four key lessons that I have learned:

  1. Start Small, Dream Big - Success doesn’t come overnight. When you give each post your best effort, you are laying a foundation that will rock. So focus on creating small wins, like writing consistently or improving post by post. Even getting indexed by Google is a small win!
  2. Embrace Feedback - Constructive criticism isn’t failure. It is your audience letting you know what they want to see. This is your chance to listen and get better. Boomers have learned to adapt and grow from feedback over decades. So can you!
  3. Don’t Sweat the Numbers (Yet) - This was one of the hardest lessons for me to learn. Early metrics rarely reflect your true potential. Boomers know that value is built over time, not in quick bursts.
  4. Keep Learning - You learn something new every day. Some days what you learn is answers to new trivia questions. Other days you learn something new to help you master niche blogging. Take a moment to go back and look at your earlier posts. Celebrate the win when you recognize how far you have progressed! Then take a moment to update that old post with everything that you have learned.

A Message of Encouragement for New Bloggers

If you’re feeling discouraged, remember this: Every successful blogger was once where you are now. Boomers will tell you that resilience, effort, and consistency matter far more than innate talent or instant success.

So, the next time you feel like giving up, think of it as a challenge to rise to, not a sign to quit. Write that next post, even if no one has read it yet. Share your voice, even if it feels small. Because every effort counts, and the impact you’re dreaming of is just a little further down the road.

Hang In There - It Can Get Worse (Before It Gets Better!)

Love the wisdom as always Don.

My first site has officially been up for 13 months. It seems to be dead in the water, like a ship abandoned at sea. However, I am the captain who doesn’t give up easily, who still sees the beauty of my ship and the future visions of success. I’m still publishing articles but Google has decided to keep me in the sandbox. It’s really hard to stay inspired.

I’ve made various improvements, including updating articles, rewriting them, and enhancing meta titles to be more captivating. I’ve also adjusted my keywords, redesigned the navigation menu, and implemented other changes to enhance the overall user experience.

One thing I realized is that my site is way too broad and after a year, I’ve ended up with a collection of “nice” blog posts that really have no direction. I’ve been using Grok 3 and ChatGPT to help me narrow the niche down but just haven’t found “the one” quite yet.

Grok and ChatGPT are great tools to use. I use them daily.
I have even "enhanced" Grok to be closer to my voice.

But I have another tool that may be of use. I am working with Google Notebook. Have you used it? Here is my plan...

With the "Printer Friendly" (that is the name of it) Chrome extension, I am turning all of my blog posts into a PDF. I am doing this by category.

I am doing this be category because I am approaching 200 posts, and Google Notebook can only handle 50 Sources at a time.

I then plan to feed the categorized PDFs to Google Notebook. From there I will have it tell me where to sharpen the focus.

I will post the results.

Don

Hello, Mrdon1 I like what I see, and I can learn a thing or 2 from u, Love your site "What is $1 Million Mean to You", maybe u can help me with a blog, please let me know.

Tim,

I will help you out. Post your website link, and I will look at it.

Anything I can practice with improves my ability on my paid niche selection services on another platform.

Don

Thank you MrDon1 I have Several, But the 1 I'm working on is mrwillan71.com, I am Focusing on the flooring for now, I Appreciate whatever u can do for me

Tim,

From a landing page perspective, the first thing I noticed was the blurry image on the right. That needs to be replaced/updated. Take the image to Canva to improve it or replace it with something better.

The second thing I noticed is that your menu links do not go anywhere. They are a decent start to categories, though I would change "Page" to Blog".

Next up, is the Vision. Everyone expects Honest Service, your saying it from the start gives me pause.

Why is the customer coming to your page? I would change the landing "Vision" to something like

OUR VISION
Beautifully Restored Floors You’ll Love - Always

Enjoy top-quality flooring work, repairs, and honest service—saving your floor whenever possible with the right materials.

The logo is way too hard to read. I changed it up and kept it word-based. See Below

This will also go to replace your Blue "W" Favicon.

Your landing page is set.

Next, take a look at these two niche options. and set them into The Hub.

Pick one.

Option 1: Hardwood Floor Fixes for Homeowners (My 40-Year Floorboard Tale)
Ease: Very High
Flooring is your life—fixes flow naturally from your decades of saves. A post like “5 Hardwood Repairs You Can DIY” takes a day with your tools and a phone pic.

Low-Hanging Fruit: Very High
Quick tips (e.g., “Fill Scratches for $5”) hook homeowners instantly—millions need floor help. Affiliates (tools, finishes) plug in Day 1—$5-$20/click potential. X/IG shares (“Fix this today!”) = fast traffic; homeowner-floor fix niche = less noise than big reno blogs.

Traffic Potential: High
1K–5K visits/month in 6–12 months—ranks fast on “hardwood floor repair” (10K–20K searches) with your pro twist.

*****************************

Option 2: Retirement Side Hustles for Flooring Pros (My Hammer-to-Laptop Journey)
Ease: High
Your contractor grit plus retirement goals make hustle ideas a snap—posts like “3 Gigs from Flooring Skills” come easy with your experience and a quick note.

Low-Hanging Fruit: High
Practical tips (e.g., “Sell Floor Scraps for Cash”) grab retiring tradesfolk—big audience (millions) seeking income. Affiliates (courses, tools) start Day 1—$5-$15/click potential. X/IG shares (“Start this now!”) = quick buzz; flooring-pro hustle niche = wide open vs. generic retirement blogs.

Traffic Potential: High
1K–4K visits/month in 6–12 months—taps “retirement side hustles” (5K–15K searches) with a trade spin.

*************

Either will get you out of the field in due time.

Then simply crank away at all of the suggestions that the hub spits out.

Hope this helps.

Don

Thanks Don1, lots to work on, but i will get there, thanks again, stay in touch for improvements

By all means, please do. Out of curiosity, did you like the logos? I wanted to keep it "written" as you had it but bring in the wood aspect.

Don

This post came at a great time for me. Success hasn't been coming as fast as I planned on, but I'm slowly realizing it was always going to be that way! And I'm realizing I need to dig my heels in even more rather than less... I go through bouts of discouragement so I thoroughly appreciate the pick me up!

Christopher,

Your reply got me motivational again!

I look at blogging this way. In the beginning, you go through training. What do you really know about niche blogging and affiliate marketing? When you started I bet you couldn't fill a thimble.

The core training, have you completed it from beginning to end? Everything? How many times have you stumbled, trying to get through this? It is okay, we all do.

Then you start writing. Are you a professional author? I am good at writing, have a couple of books on Kindle, but I am not. Grammarly loves to correct what I type.

Even though I may be a virtuoso to the internet, I am still learning niche blogging and affiliate marketing. I post what I learn, with an eye to helping others along this path.

I know that it is a grind. I know that 95% of blogs fail. But what we have here is the key to joining The 5% Club. What is taught at Wealthy Affiliate is to "Find Your Niche." Get this wrong, and nothing will correct your path short of a severe left turn into something that will be successful. So I go out of my way to help with niche selection.

Niche in place, use the hub. The topic tree there is built to get you 1000s of post ideas. Be a machine. Create as many as you can, as fast as you can. I did not have The Hub when I started. I had to create my own topic tree.

When The Hub was released, I had to go back and relearn the system. Every time the system changes, be the expert on the new piece. With 22 months in I have 825 Followers.

To the 825 that follow me, we will succeed at this. Success is throwing in the Just Over Broke (JOB) and living on your passive income.

Thank you for motivating me this morning.

Don
