Let My Age Not Deter Me
This month I will be celebrating my 69 birthday. Normally I would not advertise my age as many people would think I'm past it, and I don't blame them for thinking so, as many at my age are certainly past it.
Fortunately I and many like me did not come to retirement age, go home sit in a chair and watch TV until we die. Life is for the living and you should make every day count. I believe I do, my day starts at about 5.30 am when I first check my emails, talk to my 91 year old Mum for 15-20 minutes on the other side of the world do today's bible reading with my wife, go for a 40 minute hard walk, shower and a light breakfast and back to my study building my business until about 5.30 pm for dinner, I normally return to my work for an hour or two, before retiring for the night with a good book.
I have been fortunate that I've always enjoy my work, I believe it's an attitude of mind, you have heard the saying 'Thinking Makes It So'My good fortune started when I was in my thirties when a friend gave me a tape that was recorded from an old LP it was calledThe Strangest Secret In The World by Earl Nightingale
I found it to be the most inspiring tape, in later years I purchased several copies to give to my sons.
Since that time I became a follower of authors who wrote motivational material and I have many books on the subject lining my shelves.
I am easily motivated when I'm passionate about something; I know that if I lose the passion, my days are numbered. And to avoid that happening I keep learning and researching all manner of subjects.
Joining Wealthy Affiliates was one of my lucky choices, here you have the opportunity to learn from both young and old, so if your years are long. Don't let age deter you.

Howdy Mike, I have a feeling that you only feel about 30 years old on the inside. I know I do and I think a lot of folks stop feeling any older than 30 on the inside after a certain age. I believe in the old song of "Staying Young At Heart".
Motivation is another thing. I have found motivation hard to come buy at different times of my life. Depression can destroy motivation. I don't have any wise words to get a person past that. For me, I just kept looking for something to excite me, for a reason to continue. The search and process can be daunting. For the last two years I have been on the search for something. I didn't know what but I knew I needed something. Something to do something to look forward to.
I was lucky ! My brother took me to Florida, to a place we had been before 21 years before. To shorten the story, i fell in love with the place and knew i wanted to be there. I needed a way to get there. A way to earn a living, a portable living, so i could move.
I started looking for something. Fast forward a few weeks, after seeing scams. I discovered WA through "One More Cup of Coffee" I discovered a goal and a means to make it happen. My motivation was put in high gear. High gear is where I'm at now, with new found motivation to put in the hours and hard work. However I will check out "The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale"
Hi Tom, I think you can find the Strangest secret on youtube, plus the Nightingale family have kept the business going. I do wish you every success in achieving your goals, you and I have a lot in common. Good luck.
for sure mike we all need that kind of positive attitude in life, I always said if you dont use it you lose it! good luck!
I'm a firm believer in the power of positive thinking and have witnessed the death of friends and family who just lost interest in life and gave up. Sad but hopefully they went to a better stage of existence.
Hi kws It is sad when family and friends pass on and we always hope they go to a better place. For those of us left behind the power of positive thinking is all important.
Thank you - I'm with you, Mike - you're only as old as you think you are. Retirement years can be the best years of your life for finally time is your own, and ideally, you own your own home and have funds to see you through retirement. What more do you need than time, and money to live on, to enjoy life and do what you want, when you want?
I also gave away copies of Earl Nightingale's CD - it makes so much sense and is so inspiring. It can be found on YouTube if anyone is interested, just enter "The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale" in the search bar (since WA will not let me post a direct link).
There are a number of WA members, me included, who have used this area of personal growth and inspiration as their niche. I'll post again when I find a certain link.
Here is a link to a recent post by Carla, who has an inspirational and spiritual niche, as have others who posted there. Hope this is OK to post here Mike, if not, I'll delete it.

Animate, As far as the young and old go. My best experience working came just two years ago. I was working as an executive grower and my boss hired a young fellow. He was 23 and i was 60. We were both leary of each other. He thought I may be stuck in the past unwilling to listen. I thought, what could this kid possibly know, that he could help me.
Before the end of our first day we both knew our preconceived notions of each other could not have been more wrong. We exchanged so many Ideas, and during the whole time we worked together we learned a lot from each other. I throughly enjoyed working with Ben, learning from him and teaching him what I knew. I couldn't tell you how many times we thanked each other for our open mindness and the exchange of information.
I've never met a person that didn't have something they could teach me no matter how old they were.
Wow, your mom is 91-that is pretty cool.
I love your attitude and you are so right. Life is for the living.
Your post reminds me of something someone said once about Wealthy Affiliate-it was a negative review and said something like "WA is a rip-off. I don't need to listen to 2 young people(Kyle and Carson)tell me how to run a business." LOL! As if you cannot learn from someone just be cause they're younger. Ridiculous.
When you birthday comes up this month, have a great one! :)
Hi Jenna your right, no matter the age we can all learn from each other. It reminds me of a time when I had apprentices working for me, they used to go off to trade school each year for two weeks, on there return they would be excited to tell and show me some new ideas, many of which I implemented in the business, such to their delight.
I just retired last year, so have to say that though age brings with it some unanticipated surprises and aches and pains, it only deters us when we believe it will.
I have watched the stories of wounded warriors on TV during the holidays. Many of them experienced incredible changes of direction when they got the support they needed. I think people can make it when they have support. Our friends, family, and places like WA are all important. We each need to make choices that ensure that we will never become an island. That is when our world shrivels up and we give up.
Age is really only a number. I agree that we need to stay motivated or there is not point in continuing because it will not get done correctly and just be thrown together. Thanks for sharing. Happy Birthday!! May you celebrate many more. Debbie
